I like how you explained the double stroke. Its the most miss played roll and im always about getting back to basics no matter what my playing level is at!! keep up the good work!!
Good video. The biggest problem I have when getting to higher speeds is the stick sliding out of my hands. Mechanically, the reason is clear, the center of gravity is not in the fulcrum point but more to the top. So the quicker I "crank" the stick the more centrifugal force is building up trying to whip the stick away. As a result I need to grip tighter, in turn dampening the bounce. I'm caught :-/
@KackeEgal I don't think it's a matter of more pressure, it's a matter of consistent pressure. Check out the JoJo Mayer DVD. It's more about the ebb, and folw of pressure that allows the stick to move. When you allow your grip to loosen the stick begins to slide. You don't have to hold it tighter just more constant. At least that's what worked for me. Even with minimal pressure I've been able to keep the stick in place.
What you are showing is more informative that some other videos. Especially showing the arm motion, at faster tempos and higher heights. The arm motion is extremely important as well as being very very very aware of the looseness of the grip. Any tension in the grip will dampen the bounce.
Pillows is worthless to me I like playing everything on my floor Tom that is tuned very low and only offers one bounce. Bounce is your friend learn to use it after all we are not playing pillow kits.
Good lesson Michael, well presented. I like that you brought attention to the arm movement. I believe that part of the movement is where people fall short, or it did with me. Now I can work on that....
@drumbfounded pillow is something i have used for many years and still do,there is no better way to develope good clean doubles. To me it is an insult as a drummer to use drum heads in place of wrist ,this is just my oppinion.I will also try ur methods thanks.
OMG FINALLY! I've been searching for a good double-stroke video for a long time and nobody explains it like you do (nobody explains it at all). Every other video is "and just let the stick bounce, HAVE FUN :DDD" but yours actually helps and explains proper technique! Thank you sooo much for this video!
He covers every minute aspect and detail for what it takes to do a good double roll. What is so great he explains the cause and effect of the stick. This guy is a very good teacher.
If you got something that works don't change it... just expand it. Using you fingers is a very difficult but worthwhile challenge. Check out Jojo Mayer... He has a bunch of different in depth explanations for controlling the stick.
There are many ways of doing things my friend. At certain speeds, and textures it's all about minipulating rebound at others it's all about wrist. (Don't forget your fingers) It depends on what you're trying to achieve. I no longer play in a drum line and have no need to sound like everyone around me. The only time there is one way is when you are in a drum line, and that one way is your instructer's way. Instructers vary from finger, to wrist to arm motion.
The reason people are always cutting down on youtube is because the video they just finished watching was shitty and it pissed them of... naturally the only retaliation is to badmouth the vid or a comment. In this case it was a good vid and he did a great job so the youtube surfers either move on or ask the guy a reasonable question.
hi, i've been doing double strokes for about a year now but have recently started to review them because i can get a good sound on the snare but on the toms, the second stroke sounds weak. i have tried accenting the 2nd stroke but i can't maintain this when i open the stroke at higher speeds. i play matched grip but was wondering about switching to trad. i have played matched for 3 years now, is it too late to change? how long would it take to get up to the standard i am now with trad grip?thanx
No it's never to late to change however traditional grip was designed to compensate for the angle of the marching snare drum. I love traditional, but it has some disadvantages when it comes to moving around the kit. When it come to doubles on the toms
make sure you're using wrist, fingers and rebound. On surfaces with less tension the fingers become more important in both the initial throw and the rebound. For traditional Check out the Jojo Mayer "Secret Weapons ..." DVD It's extremly useful.
Awesome man, most people tell you a lot of shit and they depend on extremely on rebound. But your lesson is really great, it helped me a lot. Thank you and keep on rockin'
Thank you so much. This was an excellent lesson. great technique and thorough teaching style.

Very useful instruction Michael. Thank you.
What is the purpose of practicing on the pillow ?
pstoner999 1 year ago
@pstoner999 The pillow forces you to use your finger more as it has no rebound.
This good for getting good doubles on toms that typically have less tension than the snare.

Why do you consider it a bad habit? Unless you're marching with a drum line that
uses a different technique there is really no reason to if it works for you.
drumbfounded 1 year ago
dude u shouldnt raise ure arms so much wen ure goin faster
jevosaphain 1 year ago
That's a very conscious decision. Doubles and Swiss triplets both stay cleaner at higher speed with the arm worked in.

so should I be able to do these on my leg and pillows and stuff or is it not going to rebound?
TheStompbox 2 years ago
It's not going to rebound off of a pillow. You have to use wrist and finger control to get the the leg and pillow to work.

When it comes to doubles going faster, what do you mean by "using your fingers"?
Do you mean applying more force via the fulcrum (thumb and pointer finger)?
Cause when I do doubles, I relax my grip while it bounces and on the end of the second bounce, I sorta hold my sticks again (I guess maybe choking).
Is this a good way to ensure that I'm doing it properly or should I not use this technique?

you need to tightne up on your fulcrum man, big time, our drumline, like i play snare it's all in the wrists don't rely on rebound
