@sigiriuk No, not rubbish, you got something wrong! pastorius is a legend, a musical genius....unlike you, the only thing you are good for is annoying people (who have some real knowledge in music) with your ridiculously stupid, ignorant crap. You are truly a clown, a waste of space, of life.
@sigiriuk i respect your opinion.. but jaco is/was an amazing musician. keep the negative comments to yourself. Otherwise learn to appreciate the bass and a world class bassist
@6ftUnder92592 he's playing with three occasionally. when youre playing chords or riding a bass note as he does in portrait, you play those bottom notes with the thumbs and arpeggio/melody with the 2 fingers
Jaco, I can hear you, brother. I got my ears open for you. I'm gonna pull out the frets on my red Mexican Jazz just like you did. I bought a new P bass in 1980. fretless. natural. That instrument would be 30 years old this year. I know what you mean about muting the strings with the right hand, especially on a Jazz. Having both pick ups turned up acts as a humbucker.
it's good to use your ring finger to play the strings, it takes some of the load off of your hook and middle fingers. Good bass players utilize three fingers.
It's too bad Jaco died shortly after filming this. He was such a genius, but he made mistakes that ended up costing him his life (like drugs messing with the wrong bouncer with a blackbelt at the club...)
True, but he was trying to learn to cope with it before alcohol. He got a lot worse after he introduced alcohol in the mix and people started to get away from him after that because he was "too unstable" for them or something along those lines
it would seem that there are things even the great jaco, the god of bass, couldnt do, i bet he respected players who could utilize 3 and even 4 plucking fingers
yeah, he'd probably love to jam with a bass player that tapped the fretboard or played with a pick, he was such a genre-bending genius that i doubt he would pass up any opporitunity to play with someone. it wasnt necassarily technique that jaco cared about, it was always about the music.
...is James Jamerson not a finger style bass player?
and that wasn't my point - my point is that there are a lot harder things to do on bass besides appropriately alternate your plucking fingers. that's all
well you can't really play the part properly if you didn't learn how to do it right, and trust me I have seen people who didn't learn how to do it right in the start and now have horrible times getting out of that happen in order to do some scales/runs right.

Wrong. He's talking about when you *pull* the string. I've just worked it out to confirm it. For a constant lateral displacement, the tension in the string is greater the closer your finger to the end of the string. (As is the force exerted by the string on your finger).
OK, so maybe he didn't actually realise that was what he meant, but he's still right =p
Nothing wrong with that, just proves that, though he was a great innovator on the Bass, he also took a while to learn certain things. Its called being Human, nothing wrong with that now is there!?
Jaco meant that it took 9 years before he was at the level( as a bassist) he showed during the time he recorded it! As for "Donna Lee", he first started playing it less than two years before he recorded it for his debut-album in 1975, but he made demos of it in 1974 so he was probably playing it smoothly already then.
Did he start playing Waltz for Debby at 1:56? I would love to hear him do a solo version of that if so.
