He's only the mayor for the inner city, the city of melbourne, and only 75,000 people compared to the 3,500,000 around people in greater melbourne, yet everything thinks he's their mayor. Its interesting.
No one knows who the mayor for Boorondara is... everyone here knows john so though.

@Ben1220 yeah your right, he only technically has jurisdiction over the City of Melbourne Local Government Area, but because there is no Mayor for the entire Melbourne so he is usually seen as the representative, even though he has no control in areas outside the City of Melbourne.
