I myself enjoyed Light's insanity, but then again I took the whole series as a spoof. You constantly see character's arbitrarily deciding right and wrong in anime and wielding destructive power. I sadly was unable to finish the series (I hope to eventually), but I never saw anything establishing his religious background or other source of morals.
I don't really think that the series could show him "heroically" using the Death Note more than once: plot contrivances and all.
Yes I hate Haku and Sasuke.

I hated Setsuna at first, but he became a likable character in the second season.
