Birch bark is great. but first look for some on the ground. If none, don't strip the bark from the tree. Use your sharp knife to cut off some bark that protrudes - has curled away from the tree. This will prevent damage to the tree. stonenstrop
For us guys, I think by the time we need the petroleum jelly it'd be gone already!. oh come on! whose with me?!?! (high five?, high five?). great vid tho.
Cattail on its own is not that great. Fire 'eats' it rather than supports a flame. Mix it with teh Vaseline you show to pack though, then you have a burn ball.
I have watched several of your videos. I find them all useful. I would like to see you using, and eating the things you suggest. For example, eat a cattail. Start a fire with primitive methods. That would really be cool!
@themarkfellows2 i understand, ill try and find some cat tail or symilar and do a vid on it to show ye. i know this isnt my vid but i do my own stuff.
Regarding Vassiline and cotton. I have used it for years, and have found the best method is to melt the Vassiline first. Simply melt a large jar in an old pan on low heat, and add a large bag of cotton balls, compress them all into the pot. This will give you hundreds of firestarters that pack small, weigh nothing, dirt cheap, are waterproof and will take a spark in any weather. I carry them in a snack size ziplock bag. To start a fire or your wood burning stove. pull apart a bit before sparking
i like how u mentioned to have backups if u check ny vids i think i must have 4 or 5 methods .........hold on ill try to list them from memory matches in a water tigh match tube , coleman match tindner stick things , fire steel with magnesium , hand sanitizer , a tindner pack i made form an altoids tin filled with vasaline cotton balls , and my zippos one offical good one with fluid and a cheep knock off that dosent hold fluid aas a spare flint with a built in sparker. think thats it lol
@zingzangzap When I was in the service, we just put 4-5 spare flints under the material flap in the bottom of the Zippo... nothing worse than your flint crapping out when you needed it the most!
I have a small white cylindrical container, it had industrial tacks in it; it now is packed full of vasilene coated cotton balls, works great when you pull the cotton apart a bit, lots of fluff.
Nice informative video. I like to carry 1 or 2 tubes of Vaseline Lip Therapy instead of the larger vat of Vaseline. The Lip Therapy tubes have the same active ingredient, 100% White Petrolatum, and are a much smaller. They are also a dual use item. Another great fire tinder is Jute Twine. Once pulled apart and fluffed up it is as good as a dry cotton ball to catch a spark.
@Christopher711 i wouldent really trust a butane cause with my experience cheaper ones crap out on me within a few days and they dont really work in cold

Instead of that tea candle, i recommend trick candles. they are strong against wind and help as an aid to start a fire.
hope this helps
