  • Now that's a Seipai that I like. Soft & hard, fast & slow, strong stances, looking like a conflict.

The facial expressions are great too and would certainly have me doing the dishes & cleaning the house without any back chat if I were her husband. ;-)

  • @ chicagofrank10...amen brother sometimes i think the worst thing to happen to okinawan katae wa Japan you wanna se an awesome Sepai check out my teachers teacher Masdanobu Shinjo's Sepai kata...gets me excited just thinkin about it

  • Shito-Ryu version is much better...

  • @moo1029384756

Not exist better version and yes better competitor and way that each one get better by your competence.

  • the best female kata player ive ever seen...IDOL!

  • Nice Japanese version of Okinawan kata.I have no comment on her kata other than it looked very contrived and mechanical. The last move is a throw ,however in this tournament age of egos we lose track of the real tradition of Okinawan karate.Remember this The Okinawans beat down Samurai with oars, there was no beauty only pain and death.

  • @chicagofrank10 - "The Okinawans beat down Samurai with oars". Do you actually believe that? It may be that Musashi Miyamoto managed to beat one samurai challenger with an oar but I'm having trouble seeing average Okinawans taking on trained warriors and managing to defeat them. Love to be corrected though.

  • wouldn't be nice to be hit by 0:43 :S

  • her gi a little too big for her lol

  • I've read positive comments and surprisingly a few negative comments about Atusko and her performance of kata. Personally I think this is a rock solid performance.

  • Gorgeous but pointless without effective bunkai.

  • Coming from a style of karate closely related to Goju-Ryu, I also use a version of this form. I think your performance here is superb and shows much grace and technical skill in the art of kata. Keep up the good work!

  • looks more like Shito Ryu sepai to me.. too flashy. I don't care for tournament karate vs. traditional karate..

but i do admire her focus and dedication.

  • YOU SUCK dont tell something like that the grace of the kata is just perfect althoug i dont practice this style i practice shotokan style i have to admit that she its pretty good

  • @tifa2030 i assume you were referring to my comment about this vid.. I'll admit she is more than just pretty good. What i meant was that in Goju-ryu, like many forms of karate, practitioners either end up doing kata in a practical traditional way.. or ... their is the tournament way where movements are over emphasize in order to win.

While her performance is really good, she is doing the tournament version of this kata which is very similar to how Shito-ryu ppl like to do it..

  • hey anyone can find more katas of her other than katas n youtube! plzzzzzzzzzzzzzz! :(

  • Super!!!!The best!!

  • I've seen her vanity corner at the Gifu Memorial Center...but what, pray tell, are her applications to this kata?

  • SHEE IS THE BEEEST

    GOJU RYU GOJU RYU !!!

  • Look to her facial expression: she IS fighting.

    Great athlete. Respect.

  • Good work.

  • I like watching kata videos of Wakai. She has the focus and the intensity she brings to the floor.

  • This is a very beautiful kata with great speed and power. The only thing I don't like about tournament kata is the need to pose for the judges. Each pause is accentuated to show off the strength and balance of the stances (and the correct positions), but the pauses sacrifice the fluidity of the kata. The energy just doesn't seem to flow as well.

  • I agree, tournament Kata sacrifices the power and application of the techniques to look 'flashy' and score better, which in my opinion undermines the whole point.

Wakai's moves are fast and sharp, but they don't look as though they'd hurt all that much...

  • She's very controlled in her movements, and that makes all the difference. I wouldn't expect her to have the power of a huge guy, but it doesn't take much force to break a collar bone (for example) if you hit it in precisely the right spot.

  • I agree, we never practiced kata for competition so I could never understand what was going on. My sensei said it was artistic impression. I'm not very artistic this way and don't see the point. Might as well be doing ballet.

  • i remember that kata , it brings back memories :(

  • very nice!!

  • Yes, Seipai Goju-Ryu WKF shitei kata.

  • u gotta love a shitei kata

  • is sepai the shitei kata of Goju Ryu..??

  • yes it is 1 of 2

  • I really enjoyed it. One of the best Goju Ryu Kata I have seen.Atsuko Wakai you are great. Thanks for posting this video.

  • Atsuko Wakai is 4th Dan. There is her interview somewhere on the internet (try searching on Google) that she talked about her childhood. The reason she started karate was when she was young she had a serious car accident that caused her some coordination problem. So she took up Karate to improve her physical conditaion.

I personally don't really into the sport aspect of Karate, but Atsuko Wakai is truly an inspiration.

  • The belt is only for competition purpose. One red, one blue, two sides. Very good kata, l love it!

  • I was under the impression Atsuko Wakai is a black belt in Goju Ryu Karate. This must be an older clip. Anyway, she is wonderful to see in action.
