  • I bring my palms together bowing my head down as this video ends

  • If you are a truth seeker, search "Truth Contest" in Google and click on the 1st result, then open The Present and read what it says. Everyone needs to see this. The Present will turn this world right-side up if it reaches enough people.

  • so is he saying our appearance is different from our true self?

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP he's saying it shouldn't be

  • What we appear to be? but there is no me....so how can I wear a mask?...because there is no I....Imagine if we weren't wearing our masks?? Imagine if we all get real??? We all navel gaze in completeness....Can I be myself and be a father....teacher ....police officer...judge....we all wear masks! People perhaps believe in and seek ultimate truth and believe people who peddle this truth (I believe many even believe they know what it is!!!) ....NO SUCH THING...THAT IS THE TRUTH..U CAN BANK ON IT!!

  • Where did you get this audio clip? Was it on a audio tape?

  • @Kyle2516

Yes, I transferred it from an audio cassette I got from a good friend in New York.

  • @Saattya Do you know if he has any audio cds out?

  • @takaminegirl2009 You can be any religion and still study Zen. It is open to all people and all types of people. you can learn more about the Monastery where J Daido Roshi was an Abbott @ mro.org. They have an "Intro to Zen" weekend every month. A good way for you to go learn about Zen and see if it is for you.

  • @takaminegirl2009 you know - you can visit his monastery in upstate New York. Many practitioners find it to be the kind of accepting place you might be seeking

  • Daido Roshi fires out !

  • I'm making a short video. Could i use this audio?

  • i am evil.

  • Meeting Master Daido in 1988 New Zealand was a life changing experience. Great Heart, great Spirit, Great Compassion. Unforgettable

  • I am what I am and I show who I am. People don't like my honesty at all times, so that's fine! (It makes for a less expensive Christmas that's for sure!!) ;)

  • what if we are all there is to see?? Maybe all it takes is to look at things in a differents way to change everything...

  • either before or after being

puptised down to that most holy and every blessed hour.

    Here, upon the halfkneed castleknocker's

  • Thank you Daido Sensei for the many years that you revealed the Buddha Dharma using terms we can understand and realize for ourselves. May all your vows be truly realized. Be one the Buddha, Be one with the Dharma, Be one with the Sangha. Gassho.

  • strictly speaking, there are no enlightened people, only enlightened activity

    ; )

  • Who is there to be satisfied? Who is there to make it or be something else. Apparantly there is someone there but there is no one. Feelings arise and go but there is no one there. Born, lived, died....? This is just a story. There is only ONE-ness, space like being awareness. Don't get lost in the story; the story is false.

  • @xmenrus this thought is interesting.

  • Body breathes, body has weight, I have a body and it supports me. All else is extra and not needed in this moment.

  • Reality actualises reality beyond concsiousness and definition-to be deluded is also the human condition and a reality of being human.

  • maybe being able to accept what IS

  • you know, just yesterday i was late to work cuz i kept trying to go to the concept of the place and not the place itself. . . we all know what reality is, dont let someone tell you you dont

  • did it ever cross your mind that perhaps you haven't got it all figured out?

  • yes it did, however i dont confuse concepts with the actual things themselves, that was the point i was making.

  • Reality is our perception of moments of consciousness. There is no physical thing as reality as everyone views bits and pieces of it from a different perspective so reality is in a way of our brain simply filtering information

  • If we percieve bits and peices of reality, doesn't that imply a reality itself, independent of our perception? If not then what are we viewing bits and pieces of?

  • yes there is a true reality, the way our minds work blinds us from it all or most of the time, to such a subtle, complex and thorough extent that we don't even see it or know that it's occuring, until we learn to notice it. buddhism is a practical way of training the mind to be still so that we can experience true reality without filtering it through all of our systems and hence experiencing a "false" reality. in a nutshell.

  • look - if you're noticing anything it's with the brain. secondly, if you're experiencing anything it's with the brain. thirdly, our mind can never be still, we are always thinking or we are brain dead.

  • "you know, just yesterday i was late to work cuz i kept trying to go to the concept of the place and not the place itself. . . we all know what reality is, dont let someone tell you you dont."

    ....unless you are crazy.

So tell me... what is reality?

  • I could say something like "your everyday consciousness" but my point is that you already know and you don't need someone to tell you.

  • soooooo are you saying "your everyday consciousness" = reality?

  • well that was actually a bad example because there is only reality so it illudes a definition. Nevertheless, no one can be told what reality is they have to experience it which is why I said that.

  • And when a crazy person experience reality... what then?

  • lets get right to the heart of the question, what is your definition of reality?

  • reality is that which exists independent of ideas concerning it, so whilst the crazy person might have twisted ideas about it, it doesn't change reality.

  • "reality is that which exists independent of ideas concerning it, so whilst the crazy person might have twisted ideas about it, it doesn't change reality."

Ok, so back to the question - what is reality?

Earlier you said reality "illudes a definition" yet you also maintain that "we all know what reality is"...

I'm starting to think that you are talking simply because you like the sound of your voice - it's ok to admit that you may not know what you are talking about...

  • imagine everything in the universe were the color green, how would you answer the question "what is green?" The definition I gave you is the dictionary definition which is what I thought you wanted.

It's not that I don't know what I'm talking about just that it's hard to explain. My original point was that most people don't confuse the concept for the thing e.g. I don't try to go to the concept of my workplace. The contrary was stated in the video.

  • "My original point was that most people don't confuse the concept for the thing e.g. I don't try to go to the concept of my workplace. The contrary was stated in the video."

Then you didn't even watch the video because that is not what it is about.

  • SO IN CLOSING

After whirring about in circles, trying to pin down a working definition of reality that doesn't contradict things that you have already said before... It seems that the "reality" of what this video was about in your mind, in actuality, was not in reality what the video was even about...

I hope the irony of this is not lost on you...:)

  • yeah sorry about that lol I had it confused with another video haha. But just curious, if I asked you, what is reality?

  • hey at least I attempted to answer your question.

  • You're on yer own Sonny Jim...:)

  • "if the reality of what we are is not the same as what our appearance is, then we're not yet practicing".

our appearance to whom? we appear differently to every human mind since we all have our own experiences and world view. regardless; we cannot know what our appearance is.

  • Buddha taught:

WHATEVER YOU SAY, DO, AND THINK MAKES YOU A HYPOCRIT AND MORE OF A SINNER; IT IS ALL MIND-CONTROLLED ~ UNLESS IT IS DONE IN CONJUNCTION WITH EXPERIENCE OF THE TRUTH (reality as it is)

Most naturally, dear reader, the more you observe the now again and again, without worldly distractions, is the more, you are surrendered, accepting, and appreciative of what life has offered you

THE END RESULT: Action when need to act and harmony with nature, total peace and happiness

  • You have put the end result beautifully. I also feel that it is what Buddhism is all about, to be with nature harmoniously. And that brings ultimate peace and happiness.

  • Superb!

  • The appearance (the waves) should not be mistaken for the ocean itself. However, the appearance (the waves) is included in the absolute - but the absolute cannot be described or sought as appearance - that is samsara.

  • Just be yourself? If it were true that we were enlightened then everything would be great ... but it's not true ... the point of (real) Buddhism is to BECOME perfect. What he is saying is just a recipe for inflated ego

  • what are you talking about? everything is not supposed to be great. the point of buddhism is not to become perfect. becoming perfect is a recipe for an inflated ego. i'm not trying to be an asshole, we have different opinions which is fine but you should really think about it. if you havent already, watch some of baba ram dass's videos about the subject. peace.

  • becoming perfect includes not clinging to ego ... so what you wrote doesn't make sense to me.

Why do you think so much of western Zen has been full of scandals, sexual and otherwise? Because of the attitude they have. You cannot argue that.

  • first of all i'm not trying to be a master of zen or anything, and i'm not even a buddhist; there are many aspects of zen that i'm crazy about, and others that i'm not.

maybe we have different definitions of perfect? if someone, buddhist or not, told you that they were perfect what would your reaction be? mine would be that they have a lot more to learn.

  • The third noble truth is the cessation of suffering. So believing that it is possible to uproot the causes for all suffering is a fundamental tenet of (real) Buddhism. There are some living arahants.

Buddhism is the path of self-perfection. It is about proper behavior, not speculative beliefs. Obviously we are not enlightened yet. Holding to speculative views is a fetter.

What is this "who we really are"? What is our "completeness"? These phrases are meaningless.

  • Ah the ongoing theravada & mahayana conflict.

"What is this "who we really are"? What is our "completeness"? These phrases are meaningless"

Yes they are. This is clear in the capping verse of Genjokoan. "Words cannot convey the action, words do not embody the truth. How can either compare to old Baoche just fanning himself."

Just like soul & name, these are just commonly understood designations. Don't confuse the finger (pointing to the moon) for the moon.

  • Ethical behavior is part of it, but not all of it. These rantings you hear are attempts to convey unspeakable wisdom through finite words.

  • That is true as well... Both are true. perfection is a two edged sword becasue it is impossible and everpresent.

  • "If it were true that we were enlightened then everything would be great"

This is exactly the paradox that drove Dogen. What paradox will drive you to find the Way?

  • He sounds as wise as can be to me, with all due respect. I loved this video!

  • fake wiseguy, what an act...pfff

he's trying so hard to be interesting, using hollow phrases and talking slowly to seem knowledgeable. Can't believe people can't seem to see the difference...between real and fake wisdom.

  • Listen to him again.

  • Very true.

  • carlwal01 Reply sounds like the voice of god .

    HAVE U HEARD GOD?? WOW

  • ^_^

  • May the wings of Divine Light and Love embrace all of you on planet earth!

A new Era of Harmony, Compassion and unconditional Love will soon be born in a new horizon of beauty you never saw before. Let your soul take the control of feelings, thoughts and actions. Keep centred and walk on the planet knowing your real YOU is Divine. In your thoughts embrace the whole planet with a Rose Light. Expand this light for few seconds besides holding it in your heart. Now,lets shine together. NAMASTE.

  • What is this real YOU you claim to believe in?

  • The real is what is real. The divine is beyond emptiness and form, essentially nondual, and yet the word itself is but a figment of imagination of a realization of an everpresent reality that is neither this nor that, neither arriving, nor leaving. Words are just as empty as the forms they represent. Emptiness is form and form is emptiness, all forms arise, arguments arise, loosing and winning arguments arise and we love and hate them, and yet they just arise and self-liberate.

  • Yes you're right. Emptiness is the phenomena of the eternal loop, expressed through our thoughts. The circle is completed when we overcome the inner fears and cease being distracted. The aim should be to fulfill promise, working with the tools available. Self-satisfaction should be cherished & never let go. Seek & you will find. Learn from life's issues & waste nothing. Relax laugh be joyous.

Always wipe your ass up the way or you will have shit in places you don't want.

    Repeat 10 times a day.

  • Mantra of self-organization FTW.

  • See for yourself.

  • A man with deep knowledge of life itself.

Keep this good work going on.

    Gassho.

  • sounds like the voice of god

  • Wonderful, thank you so much for posting.

  • I am not a 'religious' person, but my hand had to go up in agreement voluntarily on this one. He spoke the absolute truth.

  • @MENCADO It helps that Zen and Buddhism don't seem to be a religion in the conventional sense then, from what I can see. They seem to have a set of standard teachings to offer, which people can take-or-leave at their pleasure, but I am feeling that the more I am learn and the more I am taking the more I am interested and the more I want to take because they seem to be true enough ideas for me, and I am guessing maybe this is part of the ideas behind it. Maybe I am wrong, I don't know.

  • @HelloAgain151 Allow me to shed some wisdom on the topic. The Buddhist teachings and way of life is very old yet very wise. It is true that we are an illusion perceived as human that is the very origin of pain. but if we begin to see as energy rather than material on then truly sees. However i will not let go of humanity so easy it is my mother my life . my conciseness creates my ego or self there is no need to see. so i will pain so what. there is always a later time for mental evolution.

  • @MENCADO

    buddhism is not religious either
