@FMAkumadude I'd say start with the first one. SMG2 is a whole lot better, but the first one is more emotional and knows what to do with the characters. (and its pretty awesome). You really wouldn't understand some of SMG2 unless you play SMG1, so I suggest getting 1 first, then 2.

@MetroiDark13 I agree. I loved both, of course, but I felt like there weren't as many quality, original songs in SMG2. In the first there were so many great tracks like Good Egg, Gusty Garden, Buoy Base, Comet Observatory, Space Junk, Battlerock, Melty Molten, Freezeflame, etc. But the second game reused quite a bit and its original music wasn't nearly as inspiring; only one stuck with me, the Fluffy Bluff song. Both are still amazing games though.

@SparkyMK3 That's purely coincidental. Pay attention to the modulation to the main SMG theme at 1:00. This theme more so borrows the rhythmic element of the main theme and merely changes it to a minor key to make it "epic". If your statement held its merit, you could say the ENTIRE repertoire of the SMG series was based off of Rainbow Road (I doubt it).

Good find though! I didn't realize that the arpeggios in SMG and Rainbow Road themes were THAT similar. They're both in space, too!

Sonic has epic music and gameplay in the original games, sonic 1-knuckles and some of the few 3d ones, Mario has been epic all the time imo, But sonic and mario are epic know why? Because their original, None of the xbox stuff the guys, Are mascots, And thats how i will always remember them, I sold my 360 because i found it dull, but i kept the wii, my N64, My snes, Stop the war with sonic and mario, They deserve better after the 20+ years of service they've given us

Like "So long, gay/king Bowser" or Charles Martinet's faux Italian gibberish in the M&L series. I suppose Eggman's meme-tastic voice makes up for the more annoying characters like Sonic and Tails.

Everything else you said I just about agree with. It should be mentioned that Sonic games are awfully narmy and shonen whereas Mario RPGS are self-aware and even humorous.
