The songwriter himself always gives that extra special feeling. BUt this is a great song like this,MJ took it to masterpiece category starting the 1st verse.I think anyone with 2 ears would agree. His sense of rythm is 100 times ahead adn the powerful yet smooth vocals that only him can deliver. The thing about MJ is he coud sound sweet as a teenage girl and so manly powerful. You got another example Rock with you or I cant help it.When he alternates lower register and falsetto is just untouchable
I love this song and it is the bomb, I would have to smack someone that said it wasn't either they would be tone death or just really not like music at all.
@missycjazzy No. He heard this demo version and asked to record it. Marsha flew out to LA to work with him during the recording of his version for "Invincible". Mike always recognized and respected true TALENT, not just big time names in the business. I love both of their versions. RIP, Michael......
This song is so beautiful, whether it's Floetry or MJ. Either way, they both bring different interpretations that result in ultimate relaxation. One of my favorite MJ songs of all time. Hands down.
@OverXposedKC91 I agree, 100%. Michael's version is better (in my honest opinion), but Floetry did a great job, too. It depends, really, on which version of the song, "Butterflies," you like the most--whether it's one, or the other--and, everyone has their own viewpoint, personally.
Long live MJ but Floetry's version is better than his. And it's only the second time I've heard Floetry's version; all I've ever known was MJ's version. Sometimes you can't improve on an original.
Gorgeous song! Marsha's voice is terrific--marvelous range. Yes, hearing her sing it with Michael as a duet would have been incredible. We love Michael singing it because well...it's Michael. He could sing Row, Row Row Your Boat and make it romantic and unforgettable! Thanks Marsha! You are a true talent and I'm delighted that you got to meet and work with Michael.
RESPECT ALWAYS FOREVER AND EVER THEY NEED TO STOP PLAYING AND GET BACK TOGETHER! DAMN IT YA'LL WORKED WITH THE KING AND CHANGED THE WORLD WE NEED YOU BACK TOGETHER.
I actually think I like this one better. The singer is feeling it more, imo. I liked MJ's more the first time I really got into it, but this was so deep.
It's more moving in a higher audio quality, which is compromised in this video...
What I love the most is the contrasting vocal styles of both versions, from the WAY the song is sung all the way down to the gender of the singer and points of view. Lol. Call me a silly dreamer, but when I listen to Michael's version, I imagine him singing to ME; and when I listen to Floetry, I imagine how I would like to sound if I was to sing this to my boyfriend. Oh sigh....I love to love....
Pandora was the first place I heard this version on too. I knew that they wrote the song but I didn't know the demo was out there until that site...I love Pandora
Lol. The funny thing about it is, I was drifting off to sleep when the song came on. The voice sounded so different, but I KNEW it was Butterflies. I just thought my sleep twisted the voice. Then I JERKED out of my slight doze and realized the song WAS on and it WASN'T Michael! Lol.
MrNytn2001 - I've listened very closely over the years to this track and MJ's - and I've come to the conclusion that both of the vocals you are referring to are Marsha's - you do know she sings with Michael on the end of his version right? In fact a lot of the ad libs towards the end are Marsha's.
@Nachoaverage - Marsha didn't write it for Michael. She wrote it, recorded a Demo that Michael Heard and expressed interest in recording. She let him have the song.
The same thing happened to P!nk's "Feel good time" - its Beck song's that he decided not to use and since Pink wanted to record it anyways - he gave it to her
Mj took the song to the max, theres some monotony in this one Mj has power and also gentle vocals.I find most neosoul artists boring compared to the great R&b oldschools like whitney MJ stevie or Debarge. What would ahve been a regular neosoul track MJ took it to an all time classic level
I love MJ's rendition of this song... but you have to give Floetry BIG PROPS. MJ did put his touch on this song but there wasnt much he would change because this song is already fire..
@dablackprodigy I agree, Marsha Ambrosious (In Floetry) Wrote and produced Butterflies and gave it to MJ. I just love the way they both sung it. If MJ loved it, that says a lot! ^_^
I just love hearing the different styles. IF you hear her sing it live Marsha goes off more. It isn't a Michael riff but its beautiful almost jazzy in its interpretation. OMG how awesome would a duet of MJ and Marsha doing this would've been!!
i like this version, it has a different vocal style.. and the interpretation is different floetry's version is strong and yet restrained, it's very chill... for those ppl who like to take it slow and easy..
mj's version goes for the jugular.. is very effective in piercing the heart.. he gives the song a frailty
i like this one better. it's more smmoth like the song should be produced. but i miss the jerry hey type horn chart laid down by that dude dre harris on mike's version.
oh and ofcourse mike's "butterfly" riff is better than marsha's.... but that riff is sumthin 90% of singers couldn't even have attempted! and they both killed it!
michael jackson was touched by these girls talent, he was inspired by their creation. and, so he grew in his own talent by getting to know a different dimension of himself. If you had 2 children, would you say one is more polished and should be held above the other? They are both beautiful creations. they come from the same source and were both made to be loved. if one version resonates more with you, you feel a stronger connection, let that be what it is. tomorrow you might feel differently
Although MJ's version follows Floetry's demo almost to a T, I gotta give MJ the edge because his song sounds more polished, his ad-libs are better AND he doesn't get crazy with the runs like Marsha!
it's not exactly a cover. They just wrote it for him, and he actually released it before them. They added it to their debut album "Floetic" (2002) as a bonus track, and, officially, if someone has been covered that one is Michael. Of course we all know it's not like that. But Michael added his touch of class and if it wasn't SONY it would had been a hit.
They can't be covering him if they wrote the song first and I think marsha ambrosious wrote it before him but gave it to him to sing as opposed to writing it for him so it's kinda him covering them
Yeah on a technical basis but If this is the demo version it was probably done before he even recorded it so if he had something to go off of before recording his version then it's not wrong to say that he covered them.
