I think if it becomes an obsession, it's a pride issue. I've watched videos of girls on here and most of them have a certain and similar charisma about them because of their hair. Most times if u watch a video of someone with "long" hair( at least neck or shoulder length) as oppose to someone with short hair doing a video, the attitude is a bit different. Sometimes to the point where they seem very superficial... I know ppl may not agree, but I've seen it! Your hair lenght does not define you!
At the end of the day, it's just HAIR PEOPLE. And I have always had a head full of HEALTHY HAIR, relaxed AND natural, and I will cut it in a heartbeat, because it's just HAIR. Hell, when you're dead and gone, you can't take it with you. Good grief. All this talk about hair length and hair type is really shallow.
I agree with you. There is definitely pressure for women to have presentable hair though so I can understand why people obsess over it. I just feel just find a style that's comfortable for you and you'll be happy no matter what hair looks at. I guess it starts with loving yourself and how you look.
Rusticbeauty, it's such an honor to see a nigerian doing the natural thing. It's high time African chicks got into the natural hairstyle. We do the bald thing but not fro. It's kinda sad. Nyway, I need an advice. My hair itches alot especially at the back. At first i thought maybe it's dry but i moisturize daily with shea butter, glycerin pure and EVOO. Then i thought it was oily but anytime i touch my hair, I don't feel any oil.
wow i have 18 inches natural i didnt know some one could grow hair that long in just a year whats the point of weave then lol...o and u have beautiful hair
@mrsnapsful Mmm I'm Chinese and I really dislike long hair. I don't know why but whenever I see girls with long hair I think they look dirty and unkempt. I chop my hair every three months to make sure it stays short. My boyfriend likes long hair but I hate the way it feels, I hate the way it looks. So yes I think it's better to have short hair. Black girls are lucky that way. They have volume, it can hold a shape and it's short. Yes so not everyone likes long hair. I don't.
I've wanted long healthy hair since i was a teen though gave up. Only recently-Nov 1st- I cut my hair to start again. If spending long periods of time on hair is not for u then fine, sure u can tell us that u wouldn't do it, but don't judge us saying we're 'wasting our time'. Oh please! We know what's out there in terms of things to do in life & we all have different interests & we all have the right to choose how we spend our time. I'll keep my 'obsession' and you just mind your own business...
Hi There, I am wondering what has my ends frizzy. I have a TWA which is about 2". I tried to do a three strand platte in it and my ends be frizzy. Do you or anyone that is reading this have any suggestions for me. Thanks and your RusticBeauty hair is beautiful, can't wait until my hair grows more. I am 5 months BC, did it in Sept. 2010, look at my channel and you will see what I mean. Thanks..
There’s a scene in The Shawshank Redemption. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman are watching Rita Hayworth in her Gilda movie where she flips her hair. All the guys freak out, whistling and applauding.
In the Song of Solomon 7:5, it says, “Your hair is like royal tapestry; the king is held captive by its tresses.”
I love looking at a marvelous head of hair. But it's whatever the lady is comfortable with.
I agree that wanting long and healthy hair isn't necessarily Eurocentric especially when women embrace their natural texture. It seems to me that it would also be important to see short hair as beautiful, that women don't HAVE to have long hair to feel beautiful. Long or short the importance is the health of the hair and self love that comes with it...right?
That's also called INTIMIDATION.....because anything POSITIVE that BP do is against the grain of control and influence & so many BW are too brainwashed to know the difference between being content with your naturality or programed to think something is WRONG with black hair. CHEMICALS are not made for our hair and we've made them RICH off CHEMICALS, WEAVES, WIGS and COLOR.......PERIOD!! Leave the HATAZ were they be, LOL!
going natural is like a weight loss program.. if you do it for the right reasons you are more likely to succeed. what they criticize (i think) is not long hair in itself but the need to have long to feel like a woman.. or to feel attractive! to the point that they wear wigs and weaves all the time. DON'T LET YOUR HAIR CONTROL YOU! YOU ARE STILL ATTRACTIVE NOMATTER HOW LONG/SHORT YOUR HAIR IS! message to all the black ladies out there
@naturalnchic1 Totally agree! Losing weight for health is different than losing weight to fit social norms. Just like going natural should be about self love and embracing the realities of our hair texture. Long hair is often healthy hair, but at the same time short hair should be seen as beautiful too.
i think when they say long hair obsession they mean those girls who want long hair at all costs... so they cannot be seen with shorter hair!! i've seen a lot of them here... one actually said it looks more professional... longer and straighter hair she meant! she went natural just to make her hair grow! most of them are wearing wigs 99% of the time! it's a bad thing when someone says i don't look good because i have short hair. it's a weight loss program when u go natural do it for the
I saw a lot of hating on long hair. why!!!???? some of the reasons that the black womanws hair didn't grow long in the frirst place was because of the chemicals. Why w3ouldn't someone think it't Not natural for women of color to have long hair. Caucasion hair isn't always naturally growing. If you like your hair short OOOKKAAYY. It's Your hair. do what YOU want to do with it. Anyone who wants to spend their time caring for Their hair is their JOICE stop Hating! REALLY!!!
Honesty, I don't get what the big thing is about long hair. It's heavy when you wash it, you go through products a whole lot faster, your putting out more money out of pocket in order to maintain your hair, it's more to work with and if you do your hair everyday yourself, you're giving yourself a serious workout towards your hair that you could be using towards something else.
Why are people acting like it's only a "black" thing to want longer hair? Has anyone heard of the forum Long Hair Community? It's predominantly white! And most of those ladies are experimenting, researching and asking for tips too. There are so many long hair videos made by non black women.
We have lost a lot of traditional hair practices, so it only makes sense to experiment, document and share what works. And I've only seen girls with short damaged hair complain about the "obsession"! ^__^
@rosereddoll People are always going to find something wrong with black hair. If your hair is short it is because you're black. long: you must be mixed: & weaved: you must be baldhead. And if you want longer hair you are obsessed or you are conforming to a european standard of beauty. As if they are the only ones who can grow some long hair. It is all bullshit. But it is just another way to keep black women down about our hair. Cause supposedly it is worthless.
@gmcmim1 Yep! And these comments about there being more important things? -__- Well, OBVIOUSLY! But apparently none more important than criticizing black women on youtube.^__^ They must think there's too much hair talk on this HAIR channel. -__- Hair care is about beauty, like makeup and fashion. It can be an enjoyable diversion. I don't see anyone telling makeup gurus there are more important things. And it's just a preference, if someone "prefers" short hair, then keep your hair short!
@gmcmim1 - DITTO!! BW should have an OBSESSION with growing long, natural and healthy hair, for tooooo long we have followed standards of other cultures hairstyling and grooming to the total DESTRUCTION and STUNTING of our natural hair growth. It's long OVER DUE for us BW to come back to our own hair care and maintenance INSTEAD OF BEING OBSESSED with other CULTURES hairstyles via chemicals and maintenance via bad products, again to the DEMISS of our OWN natural hair.
@rosereddoll I agree with your comment. I see that we both have the highest rated comments. I am glad that someone is feeling where we are coming from. I just get sick of the bullcrap that is always coming at black folks about our hair. But God carries us through it all.
I must disagree. It is one thing to want your hair to grow, but when long hair becomes your life ambition, obsession, and measure for beauty it gets really sad. I am a natural black woman I have been natural for 5 years. It saddens me to see black women so obsessed and desperate. Do you have any idea how much entertainment we are providing for people to see how me we struggle to have something that is really nothing but vanity?
Not saying RusticBeauty is obsessed, i'm just taking this opportunity to comment on something i find disturbing after watching allllll these hair growth videos. I used to have this obsession myself in high school. My hair can grow fairly long, At its terminal length it's 12 inches in the front. After that it stops and that's it. I could have been doing so much other shit with my life in those times than trying to figure out how to wash it so as not to lose a single millimeter.
And when they don't achieve it (again and again and again) they blame themselves, they conduct experiments to see where they went wrong. Does anyone else have to try so hard? Do you see many videos with Asian women or white women going through it like this, and never really getting results? Just as some ppl are blonde and some ppl are red heads, some ppl will never have waist length hair and it is OK.
It's fine to want longer hair but come on, the OBSESSION we see in these youtube videos (not yours! others) is a bit pathetic. Women taking special hair growth vitamins, sleeping with plastic baggies over buns to keep the oil in, using three different conditioners every time you wash. And when you ask who their role model is they invariably show a picture of a woman with loose curls that bear no resemblance to their own hair. 10 years later I have yet to see one of them "achieve" this goal.
@HotButterOnToast Longhairdontcare2011 has long hair, Chellywellzshop has long hair, Rusticbeauty's hair is getting there. Seen her new videos. It is alomost as if you don't want to see black women with long hair. You sound like you are hating to me.
@gmcmim1 For the love of god what is there to hate? Exactly my point, you've elevated just HAVING long hair to the level an achievement worth "hating" on. And even if I were to go along with your reasoning, I AM a black woman and have already had relatively long hair and cut it off more than once. Instead of turning on each other, we need to confront the trauma that has turned us into dupes for the snake oil salesmen who promise to "fix" our hair problem.
My hair was long when i was little but due to poor management and perms it broke off and became dry. so yea I want to get back to that long healthy hair
Im sorry i know you might have answered my question already on one of your video but i wanted to know how long did it take you to grow you hair that long???
I'm not knocking her. I"ve been natural for over five years and have had a rough time. I have the same texture as rustic beauty's but I've had severe perm damage from getting super perms from the age of 5.
It just seems that no matter what I do, ( just recently changed regimen) that it just is ALWAYS the same length. I did cut it and it's almost all shoulder length, but it just gets wayyy frustrating sometimes.
PREACH! lol why should we not want long hair! ESPECIALLY when we see every other race of women with it. we work hard to understand our hair and how it works only after we are led in the right direction
long hair for black women is also a matter of genetics some people may ever be able to grow 17 inches but the main concern should be to have heathy hair thats where im at in my process i dont care if its short long or medium i'm transitioning to obtain healthy hair :)
personally i want to grow my hair as long as i can, why cause i just want long hair, i like wearing hairstyles that look better on long hair and i don't wanna have to wear weave everytime i try and achieve these hairstyles but its your perrogative if you want your hair long, short, relaxed, natural, whatever all of it can be beautiful in its own way, you just have to work with what you got and take care of it, my hair actually grew better with a relaxer instead of making it fall out
i think its such a big deal is because black hair in general is alot of work but the more you have, the more you have to maintain. Being natural myself i can definitely say i go through alot more conditioner these days lol. I think of cutting it back to a lil fro but i'm curious to see how long i can get it to be. It looks good both ways personally.
I don't know why ppl have to make "ppl being obsessed with long hair" an issue. I mean, it's very common for African-American women to want long hair. Me, as an afro-mixed person, I would consider long hair a goal for me because #1, it's not so common, #2 long hair means I can style it better, and #3 I want to see where it goes. I personally think that long hair on black women is beautiful, and it is a goal of mine. If that's what a person wants to do, then so be it. Why are ppl so annoyed?
i'm obsessed with lengh right now because i had to cut off like 2 inches of hair and i miss my hair so much. i used to be apl. my hair does seem healthier but i want apl back i feel nakey *i cry*
I think its a preference personally. My hair in the front is 23 inches in itself. I do too find it amazing how long my hair can grow just by retaining my ends with natural oils and wrapping it every night. My hair has been as short as a grain as salt and even then i liked it. Now matter wat the length the hair is, it should be healthy.
Wow!! I'm so inspired. I'm South African and a lot of my African sisters here in my country are letting go of the bondage we have put ourselves in. I did my BC in 2007 and my hair is luscious, it's healthy, it's long and growing. I admire you my African-American sisters for taking the journey of natural hair. We have beautiful hair. My white colleagues are amazed that our hair can grow so long! I'm amazed myself. I'm happy I started this journey. Blessings.
IDK what's going on, i'm going insane. I feel like the more i scratch my scalp, the more i'm damaging it. It ain't dandruff, it ain't anything, I checked repeatedly hence the reason i don't know what's going on. So help me, please. I just need it to stop because i do not want to damage my scalp.
@Ifygurl Oh ok. I was thinking that maybe that was the problem but you haven't done it yet. You should watch Kimmaytube. Her videos are VERY educational and you'll see why cowashing doesn't make sense and isn't helpful. But still do what works for you! If you like it...do it! I was also thinking it could be product build up. You could find a good shampoo (no sulfates, cones...etc) and just concentrate on your scalp when you wash. I used to have dandruff/itchy scalp and it help me a lot. HTH!!!
@Ifygurl It means silicones, basically anything that ends with the suffix cone. There are a few other endings too. Cones aren't necessairly bad for everybody. Different ppl's hair react differently but a cone that isn't water soluble will cause build up on your scalp.
@Ifygurl Ok nvm....it marked it as spam. So frustrating! lol Just go to my page and I made a comment on my own page with a website in it. Go to that website and it should help you out!
Oh wow. Thanks for the website. It was very informative and yeah, i need to rebuy my products cause yeah i use products with cones in it. Maybe that is the problem.
And btw, I think we black women need to empower ourselves by letting our natural hair grow long. We really need to get rid of these myths about our hair...
Yes, my hair doesn't break off because I keep it natural, and what? Plus, lord knows what the end result of my hair would look like if I touched it with scissors.
The women who just say that...honestly...are just jealous. That's just my personal opinion. But I really think they are. I remember one of my acquaintances (black female) was playing with this white girl's extremely long hair and she was like "I don't know what your obsession with long hair is. Short hair is in now." I remember just thinking she was probably jealous of her hair. I know there wouldn't be anyone hating if everyone wanted to have short hair ;)
I don't think anyone should feel bad because they have a goal!! What ever that goal may be.. a degree, a marriage.. long healthy hair. What ever their fulfillment isn't wrong.. It's just theirs!
Also, I've seen plenty of permed people who will hold on to those straggled ends. That the roots and the ends of their hair looks like it belongs on two different heads!!! The last inch or so is so see through!
With that said .. yes their are some who will go about it at all cost ..even the wrong way!
Also, I believe the idea that black women can't/shouldn't grow longer hair is buying in to Eurocentric views. Hair seems to have always played an important role in African cultures. True in America, our obsession tends to stem from insecurity, but it is our history here that created that insecurity. More black women should learn proper hair care. When their hair gets healthier it will inevitably grow, but if they truly don't want longer hair like they say, they can cut just cut it.
Rustic, I completely agree! Growing longer hair is not a bad thing, nor is it Eurocentric. I hate to say it, but people slamming black women for growing longer hair are either close-minded non-blacks or black women who are slightly bitter because they haven't researched how to better care for their own hair yet. Unless you have a condition, healthy hair will usually lead to long hair. It's just what happens. Most black women have short hair BECAUSE their hair is unhealthy.
@SparkleRave ...Your so right. I've met to many Black women that damage their own hair and thus, cause it to never grow long. Another factor for so many Black women with short hair...GENETICS.
I have an obsession with long hair, just like I have an obsession with my education, family, love, and life. My "obsessions" help me to grow and become a better person. I love how my hair looks on me when it is long and healthy. I maintain healthy hair so that it will grow long, especially since I see how easy it can be with natural hair to grow longer hair. Rustic, your hair is beyond beautiful!!!
yeah Rustic, I'll have to agree with Morenabella 13; no one is saying one can't aspire to grow long hair but it appears that some black women who go natural just have an unhealthy obsession with obtaining this long hair....that's why you find some sisters who'd rather walk around with dead ends rather than trim it...trust me there's more to this whether you'd like to admit it or not
Wow that's nice. just think some ppl get 18 inch weaves and yours is just about that length and it's natural and all yours!! That's a wonderful thing!
people obsessed over their hair to fit in to society. ever since i came on hair boards i became somewhat obsessed to have longer hair. before then i didn't give a damn what my hair looked like or how soft, nappy or wild it looked. people always use to tell me to take better of my hair cause"im a young lady"and now that i am the same ppl start hating on me for trying to make it healthier and longer
So funny! I used to get annoyed w/ the focus on long hair. I have worn my hair very short texturized for years. Now I'm 2 months natural abd VERY excited about growing it healthy and long now!
I love your vids and all the great info you provide on natural hair care. But i have to respectfully disagree with you on this one. I think the long hair obsession that black women have is just as dangerous as the straight hair obsession. WHY? because neither one of those things were created by US. By replacing the relaxer with the ruler, we are STILL measuring our beauty by someone esles standard. There is nothing WRONG with long hair. But the way we OBSESS over it...not good.
Cond...i just think that if we are black people are ever gonna create our OWN identity, it has to on our own terms. Long hair is no more 'inherently feminine" then straight hair is. And as much as we hate to admit it, we have been conditioned to see long hair on women as the DEFAULT beauty standard. When you see women refusing to cut off their damaged straight hair for fear of "looking like a boy", you know there is a bigger issue. Healthy hair is great, and lenght CAN be a sign of health...
..but it is NOT necessarily a sign of health. There are plenty of folks with long hair that is seriously damaged, both natural & processed. The point isnt whether we should be able to want long hair. The question is WHY do we want it...obsess over it...cry over it? Why dont we feel like women unless our hair is past a certain point? & when will we stop & question where this notion came from, the same way we are beginning to question why straight is better? they are part of the same issue.
Just look at the long hair youtube vids or the long hair threads on natural hair care sites...they recieve thousands, sometimes tens of thousands of hits. but vids about other issues in the black community go unnoticed. There is truly somthing wrong when our focus is on growning hair, instead of the many other issues in our lives. I dont think that black wmn shouldn have the option to grow long hair. But maybe we should question this fascination with it. Where did this obsession come from?
@morenabella13 I dont think I agree iwith your post. If someone has a fascination over long natural hair, its ok. My reason is, for most people it is something that can be obtained. A goal, that with the right education, can be met and the personal achievement is awesome. I cut my hair, so I can begin to grow it long and healthy, I am obsessed over it, because no one else is going to be that way for me. Its not about if our hair is past a certain point, its about how we feel about it...
@Byanca4j ...Please dont take what Im about to say as condescending buy you and all these sistas commenting on this thread about how obsessing over long hair is "normal" and 'natural" are really in denial. Long hair, as a inherent trait of femininity is NOT an ideal that we brought over from Africa. Yes, throughout Africa, there are those groups who pride hair length, but most traditional African hair styles were based more on design, adornment, spiritual & cultural meanings. I
@morenabella13 It was not until we were influenced by white ideals did hair length and texture become such a struggle for us. To think that its "natural' for black women to want long hair, simply because all of the other ethnic groups have it, is like saying its natural for us to also want light skin, flatter butts, longer noses and blue eyes, simply because other groups have those traits. We are allowing OUTSIDE forces to determine our worth and its sad becuz we go thru EXTREME lengths try'n
@morenabella13 to achieve something that may simply NOT be characteristic of our genetic makeup. I dont have a problem with women nurturing their hair and retaining length as a result. But this OBSESSION has gotten out of control. I just came back from a cruise with over 3000 black folks on it, and 70% of the women on that ship had weaves, lacefronts and wigs on. And 80% of the women were overweight. Theres a correlation. We as black women spend so much time worrying about our hair, we
@morenabella13 neglect our health, our eating habits and exercise programs. We think being 350 pounds is ok, as long as our hair is done (preferably long and usually fake), our eyelashes are extended and our nails are manicured. Many of us dont exercise, swim, or lead active lifestyles cuz we are too worried about our hair. So not only is this OBSESSION unhealthy psychologically, it is dangerous to our health. WE ARE EMULATION NON-BLACK WOMEN, sistas. WE ARE. and yall can try to dress it
@morenabella13 up all you want with 'its a choice' or "i simply like long hair' but the truth is, you like it cuz its been shoved down your throats as the standard of feminine beauty for 400 years. I know its hard to admit it to ourselves cuz we as black women pride our independence and confident personas, but we are very a insecure and our hair is one of the primary sources of that insecurity. Theres no way the 1700 women on that cruise all had fake hair simply cuz of a 'choice". Yall are in
@morenabella13 Denial. Its called cognitive dissonance. When one says they believe in one thing, but their actions speak to a totally difference reality. If we are ok with our nappy hair, and it only grows 6 inches, then we shouldnt be OBSESSED about it growing longer. Too much emphasis is going into our hair length, while we neglect other important aspects of our beauty...like our skin care, our weight, and our overall health.
Say what you want, but Long Hair Obessession is NOT natural.
@morenabella13 Its simply another manifestation of a colonized mind which strives at every point to be like someone else. Just like our obession with light skin, sharp facial features and 'straighter", "softer" and "curly as opposed to kinky" hair textures.
We can try to ignore the big pink elephant in the room if we want, but others see right thru our denial. Our men are telling us they are tired of our weight and yacky issues. We refuse to listen. I saw it for myself on that ship.
@morenabella13 I wore my hair in a caesar for 17 years. I was damned near "bald" for almost all my adult life so my perspective is a bit different then most black women. I cant tell you how many times I had women come up to me and say the WISH they could wear their hair like mine, but were afraid. I cant tell you how many times i had men tell me they wish more black women would be BOLD enuf to define their own beauty. When we chase other womens beauty, we look desperate. We should be
@morenabella13 setting a new standard...OUR standard of beauty, rather then obsessing over other womens ideas of beauty. The explosion of the lacefront industry is proof of just how desperate we are to look like someone else. We end up looking like lost rag dolls with no owner!
I am a member of several natural hair care sites and there is STILL an obessission with length, even when natural. Thats telling. We STILL, even as naturals, obsess over long hair.
@morenabella13 oh...and for all those who equate my position with being 'jealous' or disgruntled, please know this. I actually prefer myself with short hair and have only decided to grow it out so I can experience locs. Not for length or for 'styling' options. I think this constant need to "switch" it up that sistas have is partly related to our discomfort with our hair. (and partially due to our cultural connection to our African history). no other group seems to have to "change' their hair
@morenabella13 as much as us & I wonder sometimes if thats becuz we simply cannot accept our hair as it is...even when natural. I am not 'jealous" of long hair or of any woman's ability to retain length. i dont think there is anything wrong with long hair per-say. But this OBSESSION is silly, draining, costly & dangerous. It makes black women look desperate and insecure, when other groups see us trying so hard to 'achieve' what they have naturally.
@morenabella13 Last post...in the 'suggestions" view to the right of this screen Youtuber "TheMakeupvirgin" has a vid on how to grow long AA hair. That vid has been up for less then a year & has 260k hits. But the vids about how to lose weight, eat better, cook nutritious meals, get spiritually in tune, luv yourself, raise your children better & hav healthy romantic relationships NEVER get that many hits.
We show whats most important to us right here on YT.
@morenabella13 well its because other groups dont have to do ANYTHING in order for their hair to be long thats why they arent as desperate for long hair. long hair is feminine what is wrong with FEMALES wanting to look FEMININE?
@morenabella13 UGH. this comment is too long and u are connecting dots about completely different things. Weight is a different subject from hair health. It doesnt take much 2 take care of your hair, but it takes hard work 2 lose weight. An I c what you mean but this ur posts dont apply to all black women and you are seriously generalizing the black female pop. It seems to me that u think because a woman is really working on growing long hair that she must be neglecting other things. jus STUPID
@morenabella13 And dont you think a woman on a cruise isnt going to want to do her hair the whole time she is there? Thats what the weave is for LOL. actually your hair can grow as long as u want it. It just goes through periods of time wher it stops, then continues. So 4sum ppl it can take awhile. but u cant say it isnt possible. lol (maybe UR man is saying they r tired of UR weight an other issues) but again yo uare generalizing
@morenabella13 This is the post that I don't understand "It was not until we were influenced by white ideals did hair length and texture become such a struggle for us. To think that its "natural' for black women to want long hair, simply because all of the other ethnic groups have it, is like saying its natural for us to also want light skin, flatter butts, longer noses and blue eyes, simply because other groups have those traits. We are allowing OUTSIDE forces to determine our worth"
@morenabella13 No one created this notion for us. We created it ourselves. Black women are smart enough to recognize when something looks beautiful or not, no matter if what race woman its worn on, or who said its the "in" thing to do. If we think having long hair is beautiful, thats what we will strive for. As for focusing on growing our hair instead of other things, at the end of the day our bodies are the only thing we can truly control. We can face all other things but when it comes down...
@Byanca4j Byanca...its obvious that you dont understand whats REALLY going on here, and thats fine. Your attempt to defend the black woman's obsession with hair length and texture does not fly, but is a common response when black women are held accountable for our choices. Its natural for folks to try to defend or brush off our insecurities as 'natural' and 'norma'l, rather than actually DEAL with whats really goin on. All these "dots' do connect, and the fact that YOU dont see the...
@morenabella13 ...the correlation just goes to show how deeply we, as a race, are affected by this conditioning. If you dont see 'chasing' long hair as some kind of abnormal obessession, then by all means, continue on that silly pursuit. But any historian or psychologist can tell you that this is NOT a healthy ideal and that it DOES have long term ramifications for our health, our money and our peace of mind. MY man has NO problem with my weight or my hair. You tryna make this about me...
@morenabella13 ...when its much bigger then any one individual. But its cool. Denial helps us get thru the day, and it seems that you are in some serious DENIAL. I have met your mindset before and it is VERY common. But more and more sistas are WAKING UP, and reframing the way we think about our beauty and our hair. And many of us are starting to realize that we DO NOT have to emulate other races in order to justify our beauty. Maybe one day, you'll learn that lesson too. I hope u do.
@morenabella13 Ok, so let's start over. Questions, do you think it is unhealthy for a black woman to want long hair? And to do things to her hair to acheive that? Do you think that a woman is being insecure about her hair when she wears a weave?
I guess you can say these are the questions that you don't seem to be answering to me. You are just saying we are cahsing long hair but that doesnt make any sense to me. You call it a silly pursuit. You say that its a way to emulate other races...
@morenabella13 ..but you aren't explaining how that is when it is completely normal for a black woman's hair to grow as long as a white woman's. What I'm getting at is there are SOME women who just want long hair to fit in with other races, which is stupid. But there are others who want long hair because it looks good on them. Ive had long and short hair, like em both, but I like the versatility I had when I had long hair, so im growing it out. How is that obsessoive? Explain to me how it is ...
@morenabella13 ...unhealthy to let your hair grow out, or use products to help your hair grow, or wearing weave because you like length (but maybe you don't have that length naturally) and I'll leave it alone. But rite now all im hearing is a generalization and sterotype about black women that isn't true. Note that I call it generalization bcuz you are not taking into account that all black women are not insecure about the way they look
@morenabella13 ...to it, the way we feel about ourselves, which usually includes our appearance, has a great impact on how the day goes. Its a goal that can be put on a list along with other things important to us in life.
chile... long hair has ITS issues. Short hair has ITS issues. For those who have a length goal? More power to them! My hair is past my bra strap and natural and uuuuuh... I'm really contemplating cutting it because of how much work it is to maintain. People have a fit when I talk about cutting it. It's funny how "serious" people take hair length on both ends of the spectrum... really long OR really short.
I have never measured my hair. I see people who measure their hair on different forums and on youtube. They have the shirts you can wear to measure the length at your back. I never really considered the importance of measuring my own hair, but to each her own. Whatever floats your boat. It's not like you are hurting anyone.
i had long hair when i was younger and i'm not fascinated by it just because it's hair! it's somewhat long again but i never wear it down (usually in braids) and that's how it stays healthy. healthy hair is 100 times more important than having long hair. Long, healthy hair is great but if you have to sacrifice health for length, it's not worth it. I think once black women grow their hair long, we realize that it's not the holy grail that we imagined idk...
i guess i just wonder what you think locs or huge fros are. just b/c it's not straight or the hair doesn't grow in a downward direction, that doesn't make long hair a diamond in the rough.
Trust me, I know that hair can be long and out.. It still applies that most people do not see many black women with long, natural hair, and that rarity makes it all the more special to them.
locs are a religious, spiritual as well as a cultural thing. So lock on my brothers and sisters because it is apart of our heritage whether you are doing it for beliefs or personal style. We dont have to justify anything to anyone.
I am natural type 4B my goal is healthy long hair. right now my hair is a bit beyond shoulder length because I did an aggressive trim. How do you maintain your ends? right now I have multi-splits and such. I just did an aggressive trim. What do you do to avoid and prevent splits? I need help!
My hair is about 4 1/2 to 5 inches long. Due to shrinkage it can at times look more like 3''. I can't wait until my hair grows long so I can do more styles, but of course I want it to be healthy. Rustic I love your hair, I love the way it bounces back when you stretch it, you're like my Hairspiration.
Hey, this is totally irrelevant, but I just the ingredient list on my toothpaste and it has both lye (sodium hydroxide) and sodium lauryl sulfate. I know a lot of us natural and relaxed ladies stay away from those in our shampoo and conditioner, but I wanted you guys to know it's lurking in other products we use as well. Sorry for this being off topic...
You won't die, but I can't imagine that lye in the toothpaste is a good thing. Also parabens that can cause breast cancer are in a whole lot of products.
lol, my natural hair doesn't even do that, i don't know why...it kind of sucks, well, It does bounce back in twists but in general it just hangs about, RusticBeauty's hair is really nice and springy, lol :)
I think it's unhealthy when people become obsessed with it and quantify beauty by hair length. Some women actually hate themselves and the way they look until they have long hair. If anything, I would be concerned with someone getting their self-esteem in check before they start let something like this consume them.
Hi, I decided to go natural this Dec. my last touch up was in Oct. I warned my husband and 2 sons and they are shocked. I don't want to do the big chop yet. Idk I just don't want to look like a boy. Please give me words of encouragement. I told some ppl and it's sad how our ppl are so negative about our beautiful natural kinky hair. Well at least some of us. My hair is type 4b. What is your hair type? Your hair is beautiful, love it.
I love that comment "and WAT" is says everything doesn't it!! Why shouldn't we want long hair? We have the type of hair that does grow very slowly because of the curl or whatever. We don't have the freedom of other races of our hair growing at an uncontrollable speed. We don't have the freedom to just FORGET about it like other races can. Our hair is more delicate and needs more care and concentration and that is all.
Actually our hair grows just as fast as any other races. We just don't show the length right away b/c our hair is so curly and curls in on itself more. If you take vitamins or eat properlly or work out everyday or do all three you will be shocked at how much faster then usual your hair will grow. The average human grows 6 inches a year. That is half an inch every month.
Really? I didn't realise that? My hair grows at a slow even pace (well, slow to ME anyway). If it did grow at the same pace as everyone else's, even with the tight ball-point pen-spring curl that I have, why isn't it cascading down my back? I still think it is the HOLY GRAIL or black hair because its something we just don't see or experience often. Only with people who are mixed with another race or have other races in their backstory.
Your hair is Soo Beautiful. People looking at you hair should realise that good hair doesnt have to be straight. My hair is natural(VERY COARSE) and has grown to shoudler length, im pleased cuz i did cut my hair to 2 inches at the beginning of the year, so that is a start right?
LOL "And what?" I haven't heard that in a while lol....anyway, I don't see the problem. if you had short hair all your life, what's wrong with wanting to try something new...esp. if its in a healthy manner
So what!.. Other race of women worry about their hair, Commercial tell women you're not beautiful unless you have blanket length hair we all seen them (shampoos and conditioners )"you must buy them ". So as black women we want what black women in the past had thick long beautiful hair. Is there a problem with that?....
my hair is the healthiest its ever been since i went natural, so i'm pretty satisfied, but i'm not gonna lie...i have a length goal too and i'm working to acheive that goal as well...
I wanna have long healthy hair just like u! Ur like my "Natural Hair Idol" lol
I'm getting there... my hair is about 10+ inches right now (at its longest point) and if I keep this up it'll be at ur length in about a year or less, cuz my hair does grow very fast.
I am trying to grow my natural hair from shoulder length to apl length this year. I may not be there but I love my hair just the same. Most people are very critical and judgemental about their own secret desires. Someday I want to have my hair like yours!
I think some people take it to another level...hair growth that is..like the "Good Hair" stereotype as well a the "curl definition" issue. Is that the just of hair or is it more. Now I am not saying something is wrong with having hair goals because I have them as well. But the growth and curl definition seems to have take the place of caring for the hair.
As naturals our main goal should be healthy scalp and hair first..growth will come.
I have noticed that it is always the females with the short hair or just straight baldhead who talk the most shit. That ringaroundtharosey chick is ugly and need to grow her damn hair, lol. Keep doing you Rusticbeauty. We get tired of seeing baldhead ass females or females (black) who just don't seem to have a decent length of hair.

YOU ARE STILL ATTRACTIVE NOMATTER HOW LONG/SHORT YOUR HAIR IS! message to all the black ladies out there
naturalnchic1 1 year ago 5
@naturalnchic1 Totally agree! Losing weight for health is different than losing weight to fit social norms. Just like going natural should be about self love and embracing the realities of our hair texture. Long hair is often healthy hair, but at the same time short hair should be seen as beautiful too.
tripudium17 1 year ago 2
i think when they say long hair obsession they mean those girls who want long hair at all costs... so they cannot be seen with shorter hair!! i've seen a lot of them here... one actually said it looks more professional... longer and straighter hair she meant! she went natural just to make her hair grow! most of them are wearing wigs 99% of the time! it's a bad thing when someone says i don't look good because i have short hair. it's a weight loss program when u go natural do it for the
naturalnchic1 1 year ago
I saw a lot of hating on long hair. why!!!???? some of the reasons that the black womanws hair didn't grow long in the frirst place was because of the chemicals. Why w3ouldn't someone think it't Not natural for women of color to have long hair. Caucasion hair isn't always naturally growing. If you like your hair short OOOKKAAYY. It's Your hair. do what YOU want to do with it. Anyone who wants to spend their time caring for Their hair is their JOICE stop Hating! REALLY!!!
LadyShyye 1 year ago 2

rosereddoll 1 year ago 20
@rosereddoll People are always going to find something wrong with black hair. If your hair is short it is because you're black. long: you must be mixed: & weaved: you must be baldhead. And if you want longer hair you are obsessed or you are conforming to a european standard of beauty. As if they are the only ones who can grow some long hair. It is all bullshit. But it is just another way to keep black women down about our hair. Cause supposedly it is worthless.
gmcmim1 1 year ago 35
@gmcmim1 Yep! And these comments about there being more important things? -__- Well, OBVIOUSLY! But apparently none more important than criticizing black women on youtube.^__^ They must think there's too much hair talk on this HAIR channel. -__- Hair care is about beauty, like makeup and fashion. It can be an enjoyable diversion. I don't see anyone telling makeup gurus there are more important things. And it's just a preference, if someone "prefers" short hair, then keep your hair short!
rosereddoll 1 year ago
@gmcmim1 - DITTO!! BW should have an OBSESSION with growing long, natural and healthy hair, for tooooo long we have followed standards of other cultures hairstyling and grooming to the total DESTRUCTION and STUNTING of our natural hair growth. It's long OVER DUE for us BW to come back to our own hair care and maintenance INSTEAD OF BEING OBSESSED with other CULTURES hairstyles via chemicals and maintenance via bad products, again to the DEMISS of our OWN natural hair.
mssquirrely 1 year ago
@rosereddoll I agree with your comment. I see that we both have the highest rated comments. I am glad that someone is feeling where we are coming from. I just get sick of the bullcrap that is always coming at black folks about our hair. But God carries us through it all.
gmcmim1 3 months ago

HotButterOnToast 1 year ago
@HotButterOnToast
I totally agree. There is to much going on in the world to put so much time into something that really means nothing.
meagsworld 1 year ago
And when they don't achieve it (again and again and again) they blame themselves, they conduct experiments to see where they went wrong. Does anyone else have to try so hard? Do you see many videos with Asian women or white women going through it like this, and never really getting results? Just as some ppl are blonde and some ppl are red heads, some ppl will never have waist length hair and it is OK.
HotButterOnToast 1 year ago
It's fine to want longer hair but come on, the OBSESSION we see in these youtube videos (not yours! others) is a bit pathetic. Women taking special hair growth vitamins, sleeping with plastic baggies over buns to keep the oil in, using three different conditioners every time you wash. And when you ask who their role model is they invariably show a picture of a woman with loose curls that bear no resemblance to their own hair. 10 years later I have yet to see one of them "achieve" this goal.
HotButterOnToast 1 year ago
@HotButterOnToast Longhairdontcare2011 has long hair, Chellywellzshop has long hair, Rusticbeauty's hair is getting there. Seen her new videos. It is alomost as if you don't want to see black women with long hair. You sound like you are hating to me.
gmcmim1 1 year ago 4
@gmcmim1 For the love of god what is there to hate? Exactly my point, you've elevated just HAVING long hair to the level an achievement worth "hating" on. And even if I were to go along with your reasoning, I AM a black woman and have already had relatively long hair and cut it off more than once. Instead of turning on each other, we need to confront the trauma that has turned us into dupes for the snake oil salesmen who promise to "fix" our hair problem.

I did cut it and it's almost all shoulder length, but it just gets wayyy frustrating sometimes.

i think its such a big deal is because black hair in general is alot of work but the more you have, the more you have to maintain.

I think its a preference personally. My hair in the front is 23 inches in itself. I do too find it amazing how long my hair can grow just by retaining my ends with natural oils and wrapping it every night. My hair has been as short as a grain as salt and even then i liked it. Now matter wat the length the hair is, it should be healthy.

HTH!!!

@411blah411
Oh alright thank you so much. BTW: when you said cones, what do you mean by that. My shampoo has no sulfates but idk what cones are.
Ifygurl 8 months ago
@Ifygurl It means silicones, basically anything that ends with the suffix cone. There are a few other endings too. Cones aren't necessairly bad for everybody. Different ppl's hair react differently but a cone that isn't water soluble will cause build up on your scalp.

And btw, I think we black women need to empower ourselves by letting our natural hair grow long. We really need to get rid of these myths about our hair...
Yes, my hair doesn't break off because I keep it natural, and what? Plus, lord knows what the end result of my hair would look like if I touched it with scissors.
Xinoutorah 1 year ago 2
The women who just say that...honestly...are just jealous. That's just my personal opinion. But I really think they are. I remember one of my acquaintances (black female) was playing with this white girl's extremely long hair and she was like "I don't know what your obsession with long hair is. Short hair is in now." I remember just thinking she was probably jealous of her hair. I know there wouldn't be anyone hating if everyone wanted to have short hair ;)
Xinoutorah 1 year ago 2
I don't think anyone should feel bad because they have a goal!! What ever that goal may be.. a degree, a marriage.. long healthy hair. What ever their fulfillment isn't wrong.. It's just theirs!
Also, I've seen plenty of permed people who will hold on to those straggled ends. That the roots and the ends of their hair looks like it belongs on two different heads!!! The last inch or so is so see through!
With that said .. yes their are some who will go about it at all cost ..even the wrong way!
kaklco 2 years ago 4
Also, I believe the idea that black women can't/shouldn't grow longer hair is buying in to Eurocentric views. Hair seems to have always played an important role in African cultures. True in America, our obsession tends to stem from insecurity, but it is our history here that created that insecurity. More black women should learn proper hair care. When their hair gets healthier it will inevitably grow, but if they truly don't want longer hair like they say, they can cut just cut it.
SparkleRave 2 years ago 7
Rustic, I completely agree! Growing longer hair is not a bad thing, nor is it Eurocentric. I hate to say it, but people slamming black women for growing longer hair are either close-minded non-blacks or black women who are slightly bitter because they haven't researched how to better care for their own hair yet. Unless you have a condition, healthy hair will usually lead to long hair. It's just what happens. Most black women have short hair BECAUSE their hair is unhealthy.
SparkleRave 2 years ago 107
@SparkleRave ...Your so right. I've met to many Black women that damage their own hair and thus, cause it to never grow long. Another factor for so many Black women with short hair...GENETICS.

I have an obsession with long hair, just like I have an obsession with my education, family, love, and life. My "obsessions" help me to grow and become a better person. I love how my hair looks on me when it is long and healthy. I maintain healthy hair so that it will grow long, especially since I see how easy it can be with natural hair to grow longer hair. Rustic, your hair is beyond beautiful!!!
babyshuf2 2 years ago 2
yeah Rustic, I'll have to agree with Morenabella 13; no one is saying one can't aspire to grow long hair but it appears that some black women who go natural just have an unhealthy obsession with obtaining this long hair....that's why you find some sisters who'd rather walk around with dead ends rather than trim it...trust me there's more to this whether you'd like to admit it or not
Msconcious 2 years ago
Wow that's nice. just think some ppl get 18 inch weaves and yours is just about that length and it's natural and all yours!! That's a wonderful thing!

people obsessed over their hair to fit in to society. ever since i came on hair boards i became somewhat obsessed to have longer hair. before then i didn't give a damn what my hair looked like or how soft, nappy or wild it looked. people always use to tell me to take better of my hair cause"im a young lady"and now that i am the same ppl start hating on me for trying to make it healthier and longer

RusticBeauty your hair looks so healthy. I think that's one of the most important goals for a lot of natural sistahs including myself.

So funny! I used to get annoyed w/ the focus on long hair. I have worn my hair very short texturized for years. Now I'm 2 months natural abd VERY excited about growing it healthy and long now!
iamsillywarm 2 years ago
Rustic,
I love your vids and all the great info you provide on natural hair care. But the way we OBSESS over it...not good.
morenabella13 2 years ago 2
Cond...i just think that if we are black people are ever gonna create our OWN identity, it has to on our own terms. Long hair is no more 'inherently feminine" then straight hair is. And as much as we hate to admit it, we have been conditioned to see long hair on women as the DEFAULT beauty standard. When you see women refusing to cut off their damaged straight hair for fear of "looking like a boy", you know there is a bigger issue. Healthy hair is great, and lenght CAN be a sign of health...
morenabella13 2 years ago 5
..but it is NOT necessarily a sign of health. There are plenty of folks with long hair that is seriously damaged, both natural & processed. The point isnt whether we should be able to want long hair. The question is WHY do we want it...obsess over it...cry over it? Why dont we feel like women unless our hair is past a certain point? & when will we stop & question where this notion came from, the same way we are beginning to question why straight is better? they are part of the same issue.
morenabella13 2 years ago 4
Just look at the long hair youtube vids or the long hair threads on natural hair care sites...they recieve thousands, sometimes tens of thousands of hits. but vids about other issues in the black community go unnoticed. There is truly somthing wrong when our focus is on growning hair, instead of the many other issues in our lives. I dont think that black wmn shouldn have the option to grow long hair. But maybe we should question this fascination with it. Where did this obsession come from?
morenabella13 2 years ago 4
@morenabella13 I dont think I agree iwith your post. If someone has a fascination over long natural hair, its ok. My reason is, for most people it is something that can be obtained. A goal, that with the right education, can be met and the personal achievement is awesome. I cut my hair, so I can begin to grow it long and healthy, I am obsessed over it, because no one else is going to be that way for me. Its not about if our hair is past a certain point, its about how we feel about it...
Byanca4j 1 year ago 4
@Byanca4j ...Please dont take what Im about to say as condescending buy you and all these sistas commenting on this thread about how obsessing over long hair is "normal" and 'natural" are really in denial. Long hair, as a inherent trait of femininity is NOT an ideal that we brought over from Africa. Yes, throughout Africa, there are those groups who pride hair length, but most traditional African hair styles were based more on design, adornment, spiritual & cultural meanings. I
morenabella13 1 year ago
@morenabella13 It was not until we were influenced by white ideals did hair length and texture become such a struggle for us. To think that its "natural' for black women to want long hair, simply because all of the other ethnic groups have it, is like saying its natural for us to also want light skin, flatter butts, longer noses and blue eyes, simply because other groups have those traits. We are allowing OUTSIDE forces to determine our worth and its sad becuz we go thru EXTREME lengths try'n
morenabella13 1 year ago
@morenabella13 to achieve something that may simply NOT be characteristic of our genetic makeup. I dont have a problem with women nurturing their hair and retaining length as a result. But this OBSESSION has gotten out of control. I just came back from a cruise with over 3000 black folks on it, and 70% of the women on that ship had weaves, lacefronts and wigs on. And 80% of the women were overweight. Theres a correlation. We as black women spend so much time worrying about our hair, we
morenabella13 1 year ago
@morenabella13 neglect our health, our eating habits and exercise programs. We think being 350 pounds is ok, as long as our hair is done (preferably long and usually fake), our eyelashes are extended and our nails are manicured. Many of us dont exercise, swim, or lead active lifestyles cuz we are too worried about our hair. So not only is this OBSESSION unhealthy psychologically, it is dangerous to our health. WE ARE EMULATION NON-BLACK WOMEN, sistas. WE ARE. and yall can try to dress it
morenabella13 1 year ago
@morenabella13 up all you want with 'its a choice' or "i simply like long hair' but the truth is, you like it cuz its been shoved down your throats as the standard of feminine beauty for 400 years. I know its hard to admit it to ourselves cuz we as black women pride our independence and confident personas, but we are very a insecure and our hair is one of the primary sources of that insecurity. Theres no way the 1700 women on that cruise all had fake hair simply cuz of a 'choice". Yall are in
morenabella13 1 year ago
@morenabella13 Denial. Its called cognitive dissonance. When one says they believe in one thing, but their actions speak to a totally difference reality. If we are ok with our nappy hair, and it only grows 6 inches, then we shouldnt be OBSESSED about it growing longer. Too much emphasis is going into our hair length, while we neglect other important aspects of our beauty...like our skin care, our weight, and our overall health.
Say what you want, but Long Hair Obessession is NOT natural.
morenabella13 1 year ago
@morenabella13 Its simply another manifestation of a colonized mind which strives at every point to be like someone else. Just like our obession with light skin, sharp facial features and 'straighter", "softer" and "curly as opposed to kinky" hair textures.
We can try to ignore the big pink elephant in the room if we want, but others see right thru our denial. Our men are telling us they are tired of our weight and yacky issues. We refuse to listen. I saw it for myself on that ship.
morenabella13 1 year ago

Its unhealthy pursuit, IMO.
morenabella13 1 year ago
@morenabella13 oh...and for all those who equate my position with being 'jealous' or disgruntled, please know this. I actually prefer myself with short hair and have only decided to grow it out so I can experience locs. Not for length or for 'styling' options. I think this constant need to "switch" it up that sistas have is partly related to our discomfort with our hair. (and partially due to our cultural connection to our African history). no other group seems to have to "change' their hair
morenabella13 1 year ago
@morenabella13 as much as us & I wonder sometimes if thats becuz we simply cannot accept our hair as it is...even when natural. I am not 'jealous" of long hair or of any woman's ability to retain length. i dont think there is anything wrong with long hair per-say. But this OBSESSION is silly, draining, costly & dangerous. It makes black women look desperate and insecure, when other groups see us trying so hard to 'achieve' what they have naturally.
It has self hatred written all over it.

@morenabella13 Last post...in the 'suggestions" view to the right of this screen Youtuber "TheMakeupvirgin" has a vid on how to grow long AA hair. We show whats most important to us right here on YT.
And it shows in our lives.
morenabella13 1 year ago
@morenabella13 well its because other groups dont have to do ANYTHING in order for their hair to be long thats why they arent as desperate for long hair. long hair is feminine what is wrong with FEMALES wanting to look FEMININE?
pinkaddiction13 1 year ago

Byanca4j 1 year ago
Byanca4j 1 year ago 2
@Byanca4j Byanca...its obvious that you dont understand whats REALLY going on here, and thats fine. Your attempt to defend the black woman's obsession with hair length and texture does not fly, but is a common response when black women are held accountable for our choices. Its natural for folks to try to defend or brush off our insecurities as 'natural' and 'norma'l, rather than actually DEAL with whats really goin on. All these "dots' do connect, and the fact that YOU dont see the...
morenabella13 1 year ago
@morenabella13 ...the correlation just goes to show how deeply we, as a race, are affected by this conditioning. If you dont see 'chasing' long hair as some kind of abnormal obessession, then by all means, continue on that silly pursuit. But any historian or psychologist can tell you that this is NOT a healthy ideal and that it DOES have long term ramifications for our health, our money and our peace of mind. MY man has NO problem with my weight or my hair. You tryna make this about me...
morenabella13 1 year ago
@morenabella13 ...when its much bigger then any one individual. But its cool. Denial helps us get thru the day, and it seems that you are in some serious DENIAL. I have met your mindset before and it is VERY common. But more and more sistas are WAKING UP, and reframing the way we think about our beauty and our hair. And many of us are starting to realize that we DO NOT have to emulate other races in order to justify our beauty. Maybe one day, you'll learn that lesson too. I hope u do.
morenabella13 1 year ago
@morenabella13 Ok, so let's start over. Questions, do you think it is unhealthy for a black woman to want long hair? And to do things to her hair to acheive that? Do you think that a woman is being insecure about her hair when she wears a weave?
I guess you can say these are the questions that you don't seem to be answering to me. You are just saying we are cahsing long hair but that doesnt make any sense to me. You call it a silly pursuit. You say that its a way to emulate other races...
Byanca4j 1 year ago
@morenabella13 ..but you aren't explaining how that is when it is completely normal for a black woman's hair to grow as long as a white woman's. What I'm getting at is there are SOME women who just want long hair to fit in with other races, which is stupid. But there are others who want long hair because it looks good on them. Ive had long and short hair, like em both, but I like the versatility I had when I had long hair, so im growing it out. How is that obsessoive? Explain to me how it is ...
Byanca4j 1 year ago
@morenabella13 ...unhealthy to let your hair grow out, or use products to help your hair grow, or wearing weave because you like length (but maybe you don't have that length naturally) and I'll leave it alone. But rite now all im hearing is a generalization and sterotype about black women that isn't true. Note that I call it generalization bcuz you are not taking into account that all black women are not insecure about the way they look
Byanca4j 1 year ago

I think we obsess over length because we rarely see (natural) long hair on black women. It's a diamond in the rough, it's special for us.
brownieblush 2 years ago 72
i guess i just wonder what you think locs or huge fros are. just b/c it's not straight or the hair doesn't grow in a downward direction, that doesn't make long hair a diamond in the rough.

Trust me, I know that hair can be long and out.. It still applies that most people do not see many black women with long, natural hair, and that rarity makes it all the more special to them.

I think it's unhealthy when people become obsessed with it and quantify beauty by hair length. Some women actually hate themselves and the way they look until they have long hair. If anything, I would be concerned with someone getting their self-esteem in check before they start let something like this consume them.

VeeBee81 2 years ago
Actually our hair grows just as fast as any other races. We just don't show the length right away b/c our hair is so curly and curls in on itself more. If you take vitamins or eat properlly or work out everyday or do all three you will be shocked at how much faster then usual your hair will grow. The average human grows 6 inches a year. That is half an inch every month.
Adzodzo 2 years ago 2
VeeBee81 2 years ago
Your hair is Soo Beautiful. People looking at you hair should realise that good hair doesnt have to be straight. My hair is natural(VERY COARSE) and has grown to shoudler length, im pleased cuz i did cut my hair to 2 inches at the beginning of the year, so that is a start right?

Hi RusticBeauty,
I think some people take it to another level...hair growth that is..like the "Good Hair" stereotype as well a the "curl definition" issue. Is that the just of hair or is it more. Now I am not saying something is wrong with having hair goals because I have them as well. But the growth and curl definition seems to have take the place of caring for the hair.
As naturals our main goal should be healthy scalp and hair first..growth will come.
