Elisabeth’s biographer, Stephen Bourne, will share his personal memories of the stage and screen legend. A first-class interpreter of popular songs, British audiences were drawn to Elisabeth’s soft, lovely voice and charming personality.
Elisabeth Welch sang Stormy Weather in a pioneering film shown on the first high definition television service transmissions in the UK in the late 30's.A wonderful song sung by a legend.
@flammasherman The film is Television is Here Again and it was made by the BBC in 1946 to promote their post-war television service (which had been abandoned in 1939 for the duration of WW2). In the film Elisabeth sings St Louis Blues/Stormy Weather with Debroy Somers and his band. At the time they were appearing at the London Palladium in the popular revue Happy and Glorious.
@TheLizzie12 Many thanks for giving me that information, I have a working 1946 Pye B16T television and it would be nice to see the film on that !.Personally I think this is the definitive version of this beautiful ' standard ' !.
I always found it odd that this was issued as a single on Industrial Records (this was definitely their most traditionally listenable release!), but at least it got released on vinyl. What a voice!
Many years ago, I was standing on the pavement outside the Palace Theatre, London. There was a jazz band wearing striped blazers, straw boaters, and masks with big plastic noses & fake glasses. A group of dancers, too. Everyone just hanging aroung, waiting. A TV camera. A masked man with a microphone. Then a car pulled up. The jazz band played, the dancers danced . . . and out stepped Elizabeth Welch, to surprised on the pavement by Eamonn Andrews and his red book for 'This is Your Life'.
To gnoggi46...it's Channel 4's documentary Keeping Love Alive (1987) . The National Portrait Gallery were planning to screen it this year but now they can't because Channel 4 have asked for too much money.
A display of rare photos of Elisabeth Welch taken in the 30s and 40s by the likes of Carl Van Vechten and Paul Tanqueray has just opened at London's National Portrait Gallery (till 31 October 2009). Go to Room 31. The photos were acquired by the Gallery from her biographer, Stephen Bourne, who has also contributed the text and some memorabilia from his private collection. DON'T MISS IT!!!
Elizabeth sings my gloom away. She is in the sun's place. Shall we abduct again. Music brings us together. 15 flourishes in our ears. 15 phalanxes in our fingers. Snap Snap Pop! The theater curtain is raised.
There was no one like Elizabeth Welch! I have read Stephen Bourne's book about Elizabeth and really it is excellent. He has written several books, his latest being 'Butterfly McQueen Remembered'.
Beautiful. I love this film and the 'Stormy Weather' sequence. Did you know there is a chapter about Elisabeth and Derek (plus a rare photo of the two together) in Stephen Bourne's excellent 'Elisabeth Welch: Soft Lights and Sweet Music' (Scarecrow Press, 2005).
Thank you for bringing Stephen Bourne's book to my attention. I did not know about it and have ordered a copy. THE TEMPEST was my introduction to Elisabeth Welch and I now have two CDs of her wonderful voice. Reading about her life I was delighted to find that I was born on her birthday. Were she still alive, she would have been 104 years old on Wednesday, Feb 27th.
Thank you for your comment. I hope this wonderful scene from Jarman's THE TEMPEST inspires many people to see the entire movie.

We watched the film for English Literature, it was a little odd, but I loved Elisabeth Welch's singing scene. She has a lovely voice.
