@HoleHeadedLiar seeing as Numan wasnt a Zepplin fan, i doubt it, and this really doesnt sound like Zepplin, the guitar MAYBE but im fairly certain that the riff, like most things in rock, was used before the said artist
@hellchild65 I think my point is that the aural impression, (not necessarily the sound) is similar: military-esque, thick, staccato guitar, over a big, marching drum beat, with dreamy vocals delivered over subdued music. (At least in the first half of the song) This sort of thing's always been common to Krautrock.
Furthermore, the mood is also not dissimilar to NIN's We're in This Together, but for somewhat different reasons/aural textures after about the first half of the song.
@derschwarzeengel1 Apparently I miss a lot of things residing in the US, especially US south. I listen to comments, read, etc. This man, meaning Gary, may I offer Telekon? We grow old here, all of us do. I am aware of Gary and his family, meaning comments I read. Give REAL money if this man bothered with show in the US? May I offer RUSH as best band in the world, Canadian as it were, Gary on the other hand?
I know everyone is different and has their own taste but i gotta say i LOVE Mr Numans music. I have lots of his albums going back to the pleasure prinsiple but i must admit the prefur the darker stuff. Fav albums Pure/Exile/Scared/Hybrid/jagged planning on getting Dead Son Rising a.s.a.p :-)
He was (is) always on the cutting edge of this stuff. NIN comparisons are obvious. I remember hearing "Down In It" for the first time and rushing out and buying Pretty Hate Machine. Loved it (and still do) beginning to end. Then Trent hooked up with Al (ruiner of many bands) Jourgensen and started to sound like a Ministry clone, which Al was apparently good at making people do. Anyhow, great song, and thank god he didn't let Al produce it. It would have sounded like Ministry.
@trypticsoy considering Al only really worked with Ministry and RevCo, both of which he did great with, i think its rather unfair to say he ruins any bands, what was the only bad thing he had a hand in producing? SP's Rabies is the only thing i can think of off the top of my head
@hellchild65 While never credited, he did spend a lot of time with Reznor in the early 90s. They recorded some stuff just goofing around together (while "altered" was the word Trent used in an interview I remember seeing a long time ago) that eventually became the foundation for some future NIN tracks. Also, while never credited for any BS work, the more time he spent with Gibby, the more I seemed to hear a little Al influence moving into BS albums.
@hellchild65 Also, don't get me wrong, I really enjoy Ministry, think it is good music and still listen to it regularly to this day (love listening to something from With Sympathy and then listening to something newer to hear the evolution).
@trypticsoy im not too big on WS or the last sucker tbh, but the rest of Ministrys catalog is awesome. btw thats interesting to hear that about Trent and Al making music that eventually became NIN material, never new about that, i knew Trent toured on a few dates with RevCo but that was it.
I can't believe how his music has changed. He has gone from futuristic new wave to hard rock/industrial. There are stille electronic elements but this stuff is not as pioneering as his late-70's early 80's sound. Doesn't even come close. If anything, he is sounding like Nine Inch Nails! It is still an awesome and big sound, but I honestly feel he is trying to please the "industrial crowd" rather than being himself! He has lost that sense of mystery and has become just another Trent Reznor!
well, seeing as Numans 70's and early 80's stuff could be considered proto industrial (listen to Living Ornaments 79 and 81), i think this was the most natural direction he could have taken with his music, its an updated, and at times, darker, electronic sound, who cares if it borders on being Industrial, it still sounds good, lol much better then the crap he made for most of his 80's career that is (stuff like Warriors Outland....yuck). btw if anything Reznor is a Gary Numan ;) not vice versa
@hellchild65 That's a very good answer. I still love his new material though. My favourite albums however, are Replicas, Pleasure Principle, Telekon and Dance. I also love Exile, Pure, and Jagged. I dont like much of his music in the 80's. It became commercial and sounded weak. I always associate him with that huge, haunting Polymoog string sound of the late 70's and up to about 81. It is so unique and sends shivers down my spine!!!
@MrGeorgios2020 yeah, i agree with you for the most part, but i did like I Assassins and his earlier punkish stuff too. Berserker and the Fury were also pretty good, at least imo. they had a more cold, and emotionless sound in them, which somewhat stands out from the rest of his 80's material, which, imo was crappy as hell, it was this jazz-funk electro music with too much female vocals and sax.
@hellchild65 I agree with you again. The first Tubeway Army album is pretty cool, and I Assassin has some great rhythms, but that jazzy electro stuff he did in the 80's is horrible! I can't even listen to it. I remember buying Berserker and The Fury and liking them, but I still always come back to Replicas and Pleasure Principle.
I saw Gary in London several years back at Shepard's Bush, supported by of all bands The Killers.. great night. Not many in the crowd knew who The Killers were I think.
@shaolinskater Apparently, Gary's wife miscarried and it was pretty traumatic for both of them. The end result was the dark turn in his music - very dark. Check out the song "Prayer for the Unborn" - that really kicks the crap out of you when you listen to it. Follow that up with "Little Invitro." The man's pain is almost overpowering.
@the567thDoctor Man himself overpowers us. Guy rides around creating music going on 40 years now, yes I remain aware of the history of him, his wife, etc. None of my business. I cannot be saved, not by you, not by God?
i am an artist of .gif animated photos. i have made videos using my animated art set to this song and several other Gary Numan songs. i think you and your fans would enjoy them. they are very different from other youtube videos, very unique. check out my youtube channel :)
I dont know too many other musician/composers who have evolved the way Gary has. The man is a legend, having achieved more(musically) than most ever hope to.
I love this. I'm an old Numanoid from age 8. This song really brings back the old angst. Beautiful. I have my tickets for next week. I'm so geeked. BTW. OBVIOUSLY Numan influenced NIN...and Korn, and a million other bands. Anyone with doubts should listen to "The Pleasure Principal " album. Then there will be no debate.
I consider myself a fan of Gary's early more synth-based stuff Replicas thru Telekon but this song is awesome. Even though some of his late 80s and 90s stuff wasn't so amazing (which he admits to), powerful music like this nearly 30 years after he started Tubeway Army proves he's always been a music genius.

so your boasting about a friend that ALMOST. lol and why is that something to be so proud of and why enter that when this is about gary numan and music. freak.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this album came out in 2006, NOT the 70's, so regardless of when he STARTED his music career or not, the similarities between THIS and some of NINs other works have come before THIS particular album.
You're right 100%. I hate when these people defend him over saying that shit. I personally can't stand this song...Gary Numan's music has died down so quickly. Hard to believe anymore he wrote the beautiful Dance and I Assassin albums.
After years of ridicule in the press, Numan found himself cited as "the godfather of electronic music" and an artist respected by his peers, with such musicians as Dave Grohl (of Foo Fighters and Nirvana), Trent Reznor (of Nine Inch Nails), and Marilyn Manson proclaiming his work an influence and recording cover versions of old Numan hits.
@cjem67 true he definitely makes life better with his tunes =) like damn what a bunch of drivel at least there are some good bands to inspire =) will I ever live to see a day when radio stations are cool enough to play awesome stuff like this? I hope so
@MagentasTurn as much as I like Gary Numan, I must say there's a bit of give and take. NIN is obviously influenced by Numan, but by the time his sound became more industrial oriented he was already a fan of Nin Inch Nails too...
have being a fan of gary since i was 16 guys in school back then would slag me for that im 42 now and ya know i was right he is so cool the music i loved it still do this is just savage haunted and hybrid back 2 his tubeway army ways the guy is a legend man i still feel 16 teen inside lol
shit/ u are right just realized that when sending my reply, read my comment again lol; so do u like his music ya his voice can be weird but thats just his style

He was never gone. He's just ahead of this timeline. And those who love his music are too.

Is it me or is that the same background sound at the very start from 0:08 to 0:25 as the 'Quake 4' Xbox 360/PC game main menu ambient music?

Sorry but I feel as though I must state the obvious...:
He sounds like a cross between NIn and Genitorturers.
I like it though

Gary had been around since the 70's. He influenced NIN not the other way around.

this album came out in 2006, NOT the 70's, so regardless of when he STARTED his music career or not, the similarities between THIS and some of NINs other works have come before THIS particular album.

You're right 100%. I hate when these people defend him over saying that shit. I personally can't stand this song...Gary Numan's music has died down so quickly. Hard to believe anymore he wrote the beautiful Dance and I Assassin albums.
seancharlesizbad 2 years ago
After years of ridicule in the press, Numan found himself cited as "the godfather of electronic music" and an artist respected by his peers, with such musicians as Dave Grohl (of Foo Fighters and Nirvana), Trent Reznor (of Nine Inch Nails), and Marilyn Manson proclaiming his work an influence and recording cover versions of old Numan hits.

I.L.M.P....
i agree, wouldn't it be great if he was given something like a life time contribution to music award.
he's worked continuously since the late '70s & deserves recognistion.
