I think the older DJs should step aside and let the teenage DJs do their thang. All but the most dim witted of 20's and 30's DJs should have acheived a Bachelor Degree, a Trade or a Career in anything if they had any semblance of self dignity. Otherwise the 20's and 30's DJs just look like pathetic LOSERS holding on to their former youth.
Unless you're Tiesto let it go and move to on to bigger and better things in your life. I would be ashamed to know any DJs in their 30's they're just SAD.
Had (still having) a good experience with an older dj. He's actually coming from 90s: rack setup, 15 speakers in all (highs, mids, subs) plus amps, crossovers and a bunch of equipment. He basically got me into the business and he's been instrumental in my acquiring the equipment. Always willing to help and I've never found an older dj that wasn't willing to at least offer some advice. Plus I'm willing to help others as well.
oops, glitchy mouse....anyway,con't from below...i just feel better not associating myself with him anymore. The one statement he made that threw me was "my equipment only comes out when i gig". Granted, he's been doing this for 15 yrs, but i cant go more than a day without practicing. I'm too drawn to explore my gear and tools and see what else is available to me. Oh and Josh, check your inbox. I sent you a note a few weeks ago. Good job, bro.
IMO, any honest DJ(new or old) that wanted help, i would help out. But ya, i 'm 35 and got back into DJing just over a yr ago. I had a chance to work with an vet Mobile here. I was kind of disappointed on how his attitude was towards clients and equipment. was so sour, like he owned them. And after doing a few gigs for him, my fears of going solo with what i had for gear
Older Dj's tend to want to set the trends of the area. They seen to get mad at the younger guys because they havnt ever hauled the big stuff. Records and or cd's..lol.. but ..Older djs have clientele like car sales people. generations after generation will only keep getting the same dj until one of their family members sees our newer more fun show!
but if ur doin mobile gigs yes setup should be decent. if you think about it some older djs lost business because younger and better djs are coming up in the scene and they arent making money like they used to. so no money to buy equip.
yes there is older djs & some use older equip. dont judge some1 by the equip. they own/use! Some can run circles around us. if they want respect they need 2 give respect back. in every city/state/country there is bad apples dont let it get to u. ive been djing for 7 years still fresh in the scene and im slowly getting the respect i deserve from djing live on the radio from 2 nite clubs on the wkends ive came a long way in peeps eyes.
I don't think that attacks on a DJ's ability and equipment will make them better. It will usually make them just defensive and closed off. But we all must be realistic. I can't be a DJ at 60 years old at an old folks home :). But if a DJ takes a younger DJ on and then they help each other in the arenas that are suited best for them. It could be a great opportunity to learn and help each other to improve the business.
DJ's Music Lights MC, all part of the show. Music that works at a high school will not work at a wedding. Lights that work at gigs years ago will not work now. DJs who are at an age that is not acceptable to the younger crowd will not work. Younger DJs with their hats turn sideways will not work at wedding. We are entertainers and in this world we all have a shelf life in certain areas. I think we should not get stuck in our ways. We must change to fit the environment.
"I feel for you Bro" Most professional DJ's never put you down. Self centered DJ's are all about themselves, and think you are to young to even understand. A great DJ is always learing no matter how old he, or she is. The guy you talked is not a teacher, rather a person that needs to feel important, and needs a lot of attention. No Pro DJ would ever put you down. Maybe someone that thinks there all that? Good Gig and God Bless
ur amazing josh i am 13 and i have been djing for about 1 year and i love it i have my own buisness and everything but i always admire older djs bc they have made a living doing it for a number of years keep up the good work thanks for everything
Thanks for sharing, this particular local DJ sounds like he couldn't and wouldn't even consider getting any advice from anybody. That is fine, his choice and decision...but we all know that the learning never stops, and that technology is improving the way we do things, the way we light up a dance floor and the gear we use.
All true! But on the flip side, if "he" would happen to come to me and say, "Help, what can I do better". I would probably still give him suggestions. But, I would be 100% honest with him about what our feelings are as a DJ. I never burn bridges, I try to network as much as possible. And if I believe a DJ is "real" or "genuine" I will refer gigs to him, kind of like I've done a few time with you. But, he obviously thinks he is WAY above all other DJs, and can't learn anything new.
