clyde!! I was honored to have him play on my last album (Radio Ghosts) from beat one to the last hit it is all groove, tone and feeling. such a warm, beautiful ultra human!!
I actually Had the opportunity to meet mr Stubblefeild about 10 years ago. That old man is still Funky. Every rapper in the game need to pay this man some respect. He's the Original funky drummer. and they got his drm beats on everybody's drum machine
It's true. Most of the JB's and other musicians in Mr. Brown's band didn't make any money (royalties) off of their musical contributions. It's sad the way this music industry is designed. Mr. Clyde Stuuberfield and Mr. Jabo Starks influenced a lot of drummers - even the rappers should pay a tribute to these great drummers.
It's normal for session musicians to contribute quite a bit, they get payed a flat rare, that's the way it's set up & the way it's always been. Very rarely and artist will reward a musician's contribution by giving them a small percentage of the royalties. The Bee Gees were a band that did that.
@muziquelle While the sample from funky drummer has been sampled A LOT .. it is not the most sampled drum pattern .. the AMEN Break would be the most sampled drum pattern of all time.. look it up.. amen break.
@bppoupore Name me one hip-hop producer who paid any drummer that they stole (oops, sampled) from. Be careful, because I now most of the drummers that hip-hoppers bite off of, ie., Clyde Stubblefield, Jaco Starks, James Gadson, Paul Humphrey, Bernard Purdie, Harvey Mason, etc. Also, be careful of the producer you name b/c I may know him. And I will ask him personally. And please don't name some no-name knucklehead wannabe producer.
@fnkdrmmr i wasn't talking about drums. 90% of the hip hop guys i listen to don't even loop drums, they just take the individual sounds and reprogram the sequence (which i don't consider stealing). looping drums and not paying for them is definitely bullshit. i was just saying, if you watch interviews with DJ Premier, 9th Wonder, Pete Rock, etc. they will almost all give credit to their influences in soul music...
@fnkdrmmr but i definitely think there should be more respect from hip hop artists to soul artists... i don't think people should pay for sampling if they do more than just loop the main melody of the song... instead, they should just credit the sampled artist... as like a reinterpretation or something, know what i mean? that's fair, if you ask me. hip hop is helping keep these artists alive, and i would be flattered if i were sampled.
@fnkdrmmr oh and yo, clyde came out in an interview himself, and when asked about how many times he has been sampled, he said he thought it was awesome.
@fnkdrmmr from what i understand they only got paid from studio time they put in. which is insane! maceo and the jb's are amazing. ive been to see maceo at least 5 times. and every time it blows me away.
The Pocket changed my drumming forever.(thanks clyde) I use to march tenors dci and i thought i knew it all. Its about staying in the pocket and grooving. All of you young drummers out there dont fall into the trap of learning all the swiss rudiments and technical ostonato patterns to try and show off. There are lots of us that can do that shit backwards and forwards......learn to compliment the song with some clever breaks then you are a drummer.....Clyde is the man
that's how it is--that's called a Groove. Fat, relaxed, secure. I'm playing drums for well over 30 years and I'm only now BEGINNING to be able to lay the s**t down like that. My hat's off to Clyde and ALL drummers who ever performed or recorded with the soulful Godfather.
Endless amounts of respect for this great man of the drumming world. James wouldn't have been nearly as cool or I'll venture to say, nearly as successful with out the C.S.
That's all you need when you're playin JB'S funk plus
that's all JB wanted it's called "THE POCKET" JB invented that shit, just keeping a steady beat and makin it funky as hell, and if you sniff real hard, you can smell it.
You must be young to say something like that. If you had any idea of how many people this man alone has inspired you would listen to some James Brown and educate yourself. Young people today think it's all about how fast you can play or how many drums you can hit. FORGET ABOUT THE GROOVE!!! Get away from MTV and listen to some real music. Learn how to GROOOOOOOOOOVE!!!
Hey! Little boy, stop talking back to those who are musically way ahead of you. Just listen and try to learn. Shut up and practice. If you ever gain any wisdom about music and playing drums, you'll be embarrassed at your own impudent behavior.
I doubt your any good at drums yourself. You're probably just some 40 year old going through a mid-life crisis wishing you hadn't wasted your years playing dungeon and dragons.
I am 52 years old. I started playing clarinet when I was 7 years old and switched to saxophone when I was 11 and have played since. Can you do the math? I've written and arranged for everything from marching bands to funk bands. I've produced music in the USA and Asia. What is dungeon and dragons? Does it have anything to do with Jazz and Funk. Little boy, I need not render an analysis of you. It is evident to anyone who reads your comments. See ya!

WOAH there 6288jointhepraty AND all who dissed what he said!! Jeez, I hate to say it, but Clyde is ACTUALLY playing the drum part wrong for chrissakes! If you listen to the original recording, he's missing all the hihat lifts that MAKE the funkyness... and the chorus part is wrong, there are no crashes where he plays em. AND he DID use toms! In the drum break on the original recording he plays with the toms over the initial beat (in which the hihats are replaced by the ride just for the break)
OK, so he missed whatever was on the record but listen how he doubles on the bass off the highhat it's there! You can't deny his demonstration is still funky where as most drummers today don't have that. All drummers today pound and don't double and triple! As far as 6288jointhpraty, he's just commenting to get people to comment back to him!!!
Listen you ass I posted my first comment here a full year ago and I'm still hearing shit from it. You retard's really must have no life to trash a 13 year old kid continuously over a year in hopes of getting some kind of satisfaction from it. If you want satisfaction go accomplish something in your life.
Ass, retard, no lifer, prick. My what a vocabulary you have developed. If only you could play the drums as well as you name call you would really be something. Anything else?
the funny thing is, you never seen anyone on youtube try and recreate the funky drummer beat on the drums. i tried searching for someone to play that funky beat but no one wants to try or something...someone should try, i would like to see it
@muziquelle Sweet! I'm gonna try to get some time this week and lay it down! Haha, might end up just being to a click instead of the whole track tho... Haha that groove has some bpm behind it when it gets going!
@plutoniumcore i don't think anyone's tried to recreate it just because it's such an amazing thing and should be left untouched, like it's perfect, and nothing should be done to it because it's perfect the way it is.
he's AMAZING- a real cool guy! you should spend time more time with him. just don't ask him to play "wipe out" or "funky drummer" on the drums- he just won't do it lol. in fact, he HATES the funky drummer song!
Unfortunately Clyde Stubblefield and many of other JB's members were paid very little for writing some of the best RnB/Soul/Funk songs ever product. Clyde Stubblefield and many didn't receive royalties for there part in the music tracks, these all went to James Brown.
Wow. The groove of the song is so inherently his that it seems as if the CD player is playing along to him rather than the other way around. Just goes to show how much of that music is built around him and his beat. Yeah, I'm a little drummer-centric.
Clyde was NOT James Brown's first Drummer. He was arguably James Brown's MOST FAMOUS and influential drummer.
