  • What a singer i love songbird and true colors too by her. Very beautiful version with the one of Elvis Presley.

  • Her singing is really quite extraordinary. Listen closely to her vibrato and the way she subtly changes pitches. Really, really good.

  • Best version ever!

  • Just back from USA-- need a wonderful lady to lull me to beet jet lag. Thank you Eva. We all miss you. xx

  • This was my mothers favourite song , It reminded her of my cousin who was killed by a train many many years ago, and i will say she would have loved this version.beautiful.

  • Can't even come up w/ anything to write. This performance is so beautiful that it defies description.

  • Sorry, should read davnkatz.Almost time to remove the cataracts.

  • Well put davinkatz.I must say your analysis concerning personal choice is the "best"i have read.

In the interim I have purchased two Eva Cassidy albums from Itunes. She is now a member of my"preferred"list.Take care.

  • It has now been 15 yrs since we "lost" Eva, and more than a yr since I first discovered her on YouTube. I have been made aware that PBS radio frequently play her songs. Most often I hear Eva's versions of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", What a Wonderful World", and - today - Danny Boy. Wish I could hear her sing the Dottie Rambo version - He Looked Beyond My Faults. Her voice is so sweet and haunting - like she is singing just to you.

  • 63 dislikes.......strange.......must be a bunch of commies or failed singers.

  • this is the only person i know of that can nail this song, she great, rip

  • I just listened to Sinead O'Connor's version of this song a few times and have to say both

versions are profoundly beautiful and should not be compared. Each artist should be appreciated

for their individual contribution.Leave the contest to who is "best"to American Idol.

  • @northernoir There are as many people who prefer particular artistsa - and sincerely that artist is the best who ever lived - as there are artists. AND - that's OK. We just need to appreciate each one. "BEST" of anything is momentary. The "bsest" today might be the worst tomorrow. I think it is more profound and honest to say "I prefer" .

  • Every song she sang was the best rendition of that song. Simply amazing on guitar and vocals. thanks for posting.

  • I have listened to all of the great lady singers for years.Ella,Sarah,Billie and more, but I don't think I've yet to hear such a pure and moving voice as Eva Cassidy's.She is astounding.

  • I sing every Friday night at a little Jamaican restaurant and one of our regulars requested this song. I've been working on it for a while now and haven't done it enough justice to perform it live just yet. I am going to sing it live this Friday for the first time ever and it's going to take everything I have not to cry while I am singing it. Eva was a fantastic vocalist and truly belongs in the same category as many of the greats who have gone before her. She is truly missed in the music world.

  • thank you so much for this upload.

    best I have ever heard

  • The cream always makes it's way to the top of the milk, super voice

  • This makes me think about my own death. What will my grave look like? Where is the place that I'll be lying? Simply incredible, because not many things can provoke such imagination in people who fear death so much.

  • Sinead OConnor does this best, bar none

  • @elgimpo1967 ...Wow! Really??? To each his own I guess. To me, after scouring the net for a performance by Miss Oconnor that even comes close to Eva, I totally am confused. She honestly doesn't compare to Eva Cassidy. IMO Guess that's why there are so many different flavors of ice cream lol

  • God, why did we lose her?

  • @jerlan23 all because of a damn cancerous mole that started on her back!! how unfair! to lose such a talent at the young age of 33!

  • @60missbenda I don't know if an angel's voice has ever been heard by humans, but Eva Cassidy's must be about as close as it can get.

  • Indeed. "Perfection if ever there is perfection." If there is not, this is about as close as the human voice can get.

  • I've heard two interpretations of this heart-rending song: those that make me want to lie down and die in a perverse kind of ecstasy and those that make me feel like soldiering on to make the world a more loving place. Thank you, Eva, up there in heaven.

  • And so beautiful, too...

  • Many here make comments on Eva singing Danny Boy. But there are no words that can rise to this. Better to be silent, and listen and listen again.

  • I've heard this song for 61 years and always rolled my eyes at how corny it sounded to me. But not when Eva sings it. It's the first time I've heard it in my heart.

  • It's as if Eva is channeling Elsie Griffin.

  • This one's it

  • not many make me cry but this does, with feeling.

  • THERE WILL NEVER BE A VOICE LIKE THIS AGAIN

  • @railroadjohn

soooo TRUE!!! i cant believe she dieed at 33. what a sin!

i cant believe what a powerful voice she had!

  • @railroadjohn Couldn't have said it better myself.

  • what a singer----what a great loss to music lovers. rip

  • Unbelieveable Just Unbelieveable !! what sweet Voice Some are just taken way too soon????

  • I lost my wife of 19 years recently. The way Eva so poignantly delivers this air is a

joy to my ears. Beautiful, and one of my late wife's favourite pieces of music.

  • @AndrewAscoli Sorry for your sad loss!

  • I have never heard this song sang so sweetly and beautifully done

  • Only Allison Krausse comes close to Eva's talent.

  • The CEOs of the Military-Industrial Complex should have to hear this.

  • Waiting for my Danny to come home from Iraq....

  • @wisewonder52 may your wish come very true very soon if it hasn't already. God bless you both and special thanks to your Danny!

  • Impossibly beautiful. One of the greatest voices to ever grace this sweet Earth. Sometimes the light which burns so brightly, doesn't burn as long. RIP, Eva. Now I need to find some Kleenex..

  • junto a la versión de Roberta Flack, es sin duda, mi favorita

  • The number of tears I've cried to this song has to be in the hundreds. What incredible power did this woman possess that has made this such an unforgettable and powerful song that has made me cry a lake? "for you shall bend and tell me that you love me, and I will sleep in peace until you come to me..." so beautiful

  • There is no antidote for my obsession with this lady neither do I want one.

    Never forgotten beautiful lady.

  • I remember when I was kid, my father teach me to sing this song..

    so beautiful.... :))

  • thank you mr wogan for bringing this lady to our attention brilliant

  • Best I have ever heard it sung ... why do the good die so young...

  • i find such solace in eva's music.

  • The greatest DANNY BOY I have ever heard. What a shame we lost her. Her SONG BIRD is great also.

  • Thank you very much !

  • She was awesome. Few words can describe how beautiful her voice was. She didn't just sing...she played it like a rare instrument.

  • Cancer is such a bastard. So much talent gone and Eva was the best of them. So Beautiful. Thank you for posting it. How the hell 57 people can dislike this is totally beyond me. Tone deafness is a nasty disease indeed.

  • With such passion, she is such a beautiful singer, God Bless her! RIP

  • Beautiful and simply moving!!!!

  • Truly, truly, Eva Cassidy simply sang her heart out. RIP Songbird

  • its good but judith durham sings this great

  • With this being my name you can't help but drip a tear when it is done right. The only one who sang it for me that meant more was my daughter. I love you Jamie Gibson and so very proud of all you have done. Always wished I could have done better. Always follow your heart and do what is right. I will miss you.

  • RIP, Dan Wheldon.

  • My Nana passed away 2 hours ago, she used to sing this to me when I was a wee baby, R.I.P Nana Barrie <3

Eva Cassidy captured the emotion of this song perfectly

  • :D i sing this song in honnor choir but she is amazing

  • Before hearing this, I never would have believed Danny Boy could be sung in this fashion. I assumed it had to be sung in a powerful voice. Yet this gentle version is exquisite

  • What a wonderful voice, best version of Danny Boy I have ever heard

    sunaj

  • A beautiful rendition of our of my all-time favourite songs. We miss you, Eva.

  • Nope! I have not heard this sung better apart from Barry MCguigans father before his fights! Beautiful voice - R.I.P

  • That she had gone before so many people heard her is a tragedy almost as much as her death. One of the greatest singers EVER .R.I.P. Eva .u are surely an Angel now.

  • luv this song <3 xxxx R.I.P Bernard missed never forgotten xx

  • wow! where has this gal been?

  • @browill9 dead :P

  • This is the first song I ever learned to sing. I love it a lot, and yes she does one of the best jobs of all on it.

  • Is this version of this song available on an album ANYWHERE???? This is absolutely the best.

  • @copperhead29 ,

Yes this song is from Eva's Imagine CD -other great songs on this CD are of course, Imagine, Early morning Rain and Tennesee Waltz.

  • @Joner888 Thank you so much. I appreciate it.

  • @Joner888 Agreed. I listened to over half a dozen other renditions by various artists before this one simply dismantled me. (Tears, sobs, several kleenex). The exquisite bareness of this interpretation comes not from her singing: it's her singing borne on that spare, patient and eloquent accompaniment. Is that Cassidy's own guitar arrangement or someone else's. I'd love for someone to tell me. That arrangement deserves equal recognition. It blows me away every time.

  • @thadeus248,

This is Eva's own guitar arrangement. This song was actually recorded Live at Pearls, a small restaurant in Annapolis, Maryland. Notice also she is accompanied only by her own guitar playing.

  • @thadeus248 All of her songs were arranged by her...all the guitar music was hers!!!

  • @thadeus248 This is Eva Cassidy accompanying herself on guitar. What a shame we lost this incredible genius.

  • @copperhead29 I have the album of Evas its available in all shops.

  • This song is almost sacred to me, since it meant so much to my Dad, who played it on the violin. This is the best vocal performance of the song I've ever heard. Eva was an amazing talent taken away from us much too soon. RIP, Eva and Dad.

  • Thinking of you Luke keep safe ...

  • For the poor souls' of 9/11..RIP.

10 Years may past but the images are still so vivid of that fateful day.

  • omg they has this on a movie... But I forget what its called :\

  • for my Jesse. I love you! D

  • I have goosebumps. Utterly beautiful.

When my nan is gone, I will listen to this and sing it and it will remind me of her... she will never be truly gone for as long as I can remember her through my singing.

  • Yes, - so Eva, why don't you ,just, take another, common ,old folk song, and turn me into a blubbering fool, again ?. Can't you give me a break now and then ? Maybe you, just, couldn't help yourself from arranging the music that brings the world to tears. . . . .

  • WOW .. im crying ....

  • Can anyone listen to this voice and deny there is a God? Eva was a pure blessing. A bright candle that burned out too soon.

  • I wish I'd known Eva.

  • This is hauntingly beautiful. The world lost a musical treasure when Eva left us. RIP Eva. You are missed.

  • Eva Cassidy was certainly someone with a command of her God given talents! Awesome! She is sorely missed, by me for sure!

  • I think time just stood still.

  • Just stumbled across this. Who the heck is Eve Cassidy and why am I in tears?

  • @deriter64 she was an angel only lent to us for 33 short years. You are in tears as this is the closest we mere earthlings will ever get to perfection. Her voice has the capacity to make us remember times and people we have lost over the years and to realise our own mortality. When I head to the pearly gates I expect that it will be her voice I will hear.

  • @candicesdad1 I'm sorry I meant no insult, quite the opposite, I am agape. Thank you for sharing your passion with a stranger. And I am still in tears.

  • @deriter64 I never took your comment as an insult, what you wrote actually moved me. It was like you had heard perfection for the first time and your question deserved an answer. My passion, no, my haven and refuge when things get on top of me.

  • If you want absolute vocal perfection with this song and many others, just type in the name john gary. Danny Boy should be the first offering. Get ready to hear the very best vocal master that has ever lived. Check him out. See if it isn't true.

  • @MrRudy0560 yep he is an amazing singer but...Eva had her vocal mastery that I and many others love, she grabs your hearstrings and doesnt let go

  • She always brings a tear to my eyes. Just to hear her voice makes me want to shout oh, God why her???

  • @xcitin121 bless your gran, she is smiling on you.

  • my gran at 98 had a tumer and she used to sing this to me as my name is daniel i was fostered and adoped and she named me right up till she died she sung it to me every night i miss u gran and one day we will meet please god she rubbed my hair tilll islept god i miss u sooooo much i want you here im crying now but ur in a better place nana one more hug is all i want sleep tight with the angles

  • O Chris Graham In 1910 Weatherly wrote the words and music to a song he called Danny Boy which was not a success .In 1912 his sister in law in America sent him the music to a tune called the Londonderry air (an old Irish tune ) and realising its melody was perfectly fitted to the words of his Danny Boy he published a revised version of the song in 1913 which went on to become a great success. Another person who wrote lyrics to this tune was Alfred Percival Graves.

    thesaltedgoat

  • even though it's associated with the irish clans, it was actually written in 1903 by a english lawyer Frederic Weatherly . still a great song though :D

  • Beautiful, just beautiful. What else is there to say? Never heard a voice like it before and doubt I ever will again. God bless you Eva, a precious gift to the world which sadly, was never really appreciated while you were with us. x

  • So sad, but even more beautiful. Wish Eva didn't have to leave us so soon.

  • Her range of this song is so beautiful......

  • @CouchMusubi Your comments touched me. Just as Eva's song does.

  • The definitive version of Danny Boy. The subtle shades of tones in her voice convey this song to its full potential. You can wait 1000 years and I doubt you will hear anything that comes close to or equals this rendition. I love you, Eva.

  • @IMaffiliateProgram

You took the wrods right out of my mouth.

Up until now I have thought that Harry Belafonte's version was the best but his version is a pale socond to Eva's.

May you live 1,000 years to see your prediction come true.

  • Such a special song... It's invincible, just like my dad now. I'm sure any of you can agree, cancer is such a heartbreaking thing to witness. I recommend all of you go read the lyrics for this song.

  • From someone named Danny, the best version I have ever heard!

  • @superdangal

Try John Gary. Not saying you'll like it more, but it is just beautiful.

  • @youanchor Thanks for the tip, nice version.

  • I like her Song Bird CD. A voice taken away much too early.

  • I am new to youtube but have been a devoted fan of Eva's for some time...she have the most amazing voice I have ever heard. I cry when I listen to anything she sings because she sings from her heart to ours..God rest her soul, Love!!

  • Can't help my tears everytime I hear Eva singing this song...

  • she sings all the verses beautifully IRISH BOY

  • Lots of folks have sung this song and will continue to sing it, but none ever have or will create the musical experience that Eva has. I can imagine Eva singing "Danny Boy" and get tears in my eyes. I don't even have to actually hear it.

  • can't understand why some people choose to not like this, 2731 vs 53 is quite good but still i dont understand why 51 people dont have a soul or any feelings at all!
