This is a really fun exercise to work on, im still dont have the accents down but its getting there, it took me about 40 hrs to play it very slow and now i am working my way up on it. I often notice if i play this for a while, my normal beats and use of hihat becomes more original and my regular linear playing becomes more complex and challenging. Thank you for this exercise Virgil!!!
no pierdan el tiempo esos ejercicios no sirven para tocar musica...son solo para mostrar tecnica y eso no es nada en el mundo de la musica. mas vale estudien a steve jordan o a elvin jones....
the greatest samurai that ever lived Musashi said that you cannot just practice by playing with ideas ... you gotta concretely do it. Virgil proves him right!
Hi! just wanted to tell you that my teacher in Adelaide(Australia) was good friends with Virgil.I used a few key excercises from him in my drumming practice and it worked wonders.Though Im not as good as Virgil or my teacher I am at a level far above the average drummer.Pick some of his excercises that you like and practice them regularly. Also push yourself in the process and you will reap the benefits. CHEERS!
virgil makes quite complex things look like childs play. i had a few master classes with him in the 90s and he is one of the most dedicated, focused, people i have known. its tru to say he is fanatical, but a master has to be.
no matter how much i try, i cant get this to sound as great as he plays it with his occasional accents on the snare, and so on. This guy knows his stuff,
well okay then....no one on youtube can play this the way he does....and yeah he does it correctly all the way through...and it is in time...and a double paradiddle is NOT twice as long as a paradiddle...
I just learned this groove, now that I can play it Ive thought about it more and the math is so easy behind it, if a double parriddle is twice as long as a single paradiddle then that means every double parrididlle will come after every single parradille hence thats why his left diddle is coming down after his right diddle, cus his right diddle is the single and the left is the double, its just half as long and fits half way in between the double!
I have got this groove down, I also switched the groove around and it sounds just as good. Another very cool combination is a ratamacue with your right side and a double ratamacue with your left side. I love rudimenyts because it lets combine so many things together to be musical. One other amazingly difficult thing is putting each of your limbs into seperate groupings and playing them at the same time.
I am actually fasinated by drumming that isnt always musical, such as donaties langs and buddy riches, its interesting to disect the complexity involved in more non musical rythems, although they dont groove there still way more impressive than any groovy beat, making a grooovy beat is not that tuff, but playing polyrythems and other weird stuff on drums can be very complex!
God you all took that personally didn't you! I take the point about rudiments to some extent - but when I practice rudiments I still emphasise the feel whereas he's literally done that by numbers, I just don't see anything special about that. But Niema, it's called an opinion - so it's 100% valid to comment as are you to disagree.
sorry but this is shit. he's thinking parradiddles, numbers. you even see him counting it out. Drums, and music should never be as mathmatical as this.
Who are you to say what music is or isnt supposed to be? Anyways, he said this was just an excercise. When you practice rudiments, you aren't creating music are you? THis is just the same idea, it's an excercise to help with coordination and control. Don't get all aour grapes because you can't do it. I can't do it...but think of where drumming would be without drummer's such as him. Just appreciate it dude and take it for what its worth.
drums and music are math, anybody who tries to separate it, is taking away a whole world of possibilities this is why virgil is so good compared to others, so go play a 4/4 standard rock beat and have fun
he had us do this when i came to one of his clinics, and i know 1st hand just how hard it is coz i still am not able to do it properly. just shows you how much focus and concentration he has.
this guy is an absolute freak. i can do a double paradiddle with my feet and paradiddle with hands but this is buy far the most insane things i have ever heard or seen!!?
Fuck you Virgil... Fuck you for being the only person on the face of the earth capable of making me want to burn my kit and never play drums again hehehe
unfortunately I ain't got one brain at each of my four limbs

A double paradiddle isn't twice as "long" as a single paradiddle though...
ckyisyourfuture 4 years ago
not in time but it has 2 extra notes on each alternation! Hence twice as long!

I misunderstood. Sorry.
