Spot on, but preventing a myocardial infarction is very important. Death is just one end point. It's idiotic to say there is no benefit....there is lots of cost and morbidity involved with MI
@loopba You MUST look at the Total Risk of Death above all else & NOT just look at heart attacks because if you don't, then you miss the INCREASED risk of CANCER, SUICIDE, ACCIDENTAL DEATH, CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE.
When I see studies that ONLY report on cardiovascular deaths, this tells me that they are HIDING data.
How many people would take a statin if they were told they would not live any longer, but were less likely to die of a a heart attack, & MORE likely to die of cancer?
@larryshobbs thats a good point. Are there any publications on this? Seems like a good topic for a cost effectiveness paper. I just take niacin, fish oil and exercise!
@loopba Go on Amazon and search for the word "statins", and you will see a bunch of books about problems with statins.
It has been reported at least 1988 that cholesterol drugs increase the risk of cancer, suicide, accidental death and violent death (from an increase in depression).
Cholesterol is an antioxidant which is why lowering it increases cancer.
Statins, which came out in 1987, also increase the risk of congestive heart failure because they inhibit production of CoQ10.
@loopba You can also go to SpaceDoc [DOT] net where several doctors talk about statins and cholesterol and coronary heart disease.
If you search for "congestive heart failure" or "statins coq10", you will find an article by Peter Langsjoen, MD , a cardiologist from Texas who has been studying CoQ10 for something like 25 years.
He notes that he has seen an increase in congestive heart failure which he believes is due to statin use.
@loopba You might also look at the videos I posted on desiccated thyroid and heart attacks.
Search for "thyroid heart attacks barnes".
Broda Barnes, MD PhD, who studied the thyroid for more than 50 years, gives convincing evidence that low thyroid is the MAJOR cause of heart disease.
When Dr. Barnes compared heart attacks in his patients on desiccated thyroid to heart attacks in the Framingham Study, he found his patients had 94% FEWER heart attacks.
For 30+ years, the makers of Synthoid have convinced the world that you should only give / take Synthroid (T4), and let the body convert it into T4, but this is NOT true.
Studies have shown that desiccated thyroid is SUPERIOR to T4 alone for all kinds of symptoms.
Search for "armour thyroid hertoghe" and you will see him saying that Armour (desiccated) thyroid is the BEST.
@loopba If you are interested in seeing a paper by the famous Belgium endocrinologist, Dr. Jacques Hertoghe, about how desiccated thyroid is BETTER than Synthroid (T4) in all respects, send me an email and I will send you the paper.
@loopba In the the wonderful book "Coronary Heart Disease: The Dietary Sense and Nonsense" by George V. Mann, ScD, MD, several doctors who have given niacin to patients for many years -- one doctor having used it for 35 years, I think -- talking about how to use it.
One notes that if you use Timed-Release Niacin, you should only use HALF the dose of regular niacin. 20 years ago some liver problems were reported with the time release, but this was because they did not cut the dose in half.

@loopba You might also go to THINCS [DOT] org which is "The International Network of Cholesterol Skeptics".
There are several doctors, researchers, scientists who talk about problems with statins.

@loopba Broda Barnes, MD PhD wrote about how he discovered that low thyroid is the major cause of heart disease.
He went to Graz, Austria for 15+ summers and analyzed 70,000 autopsy reports.
He wrote about this in his 1976 book "Hypothyroidism: The Unsuspected Illness".
If you are interested in reading the chapter on this, just send me an email and I will scan the chapter and send it to you.
It is very convincing.
