How nice it would have been if you had just showed what you were doing and never even brought up Power Tab, which you said was messed up in the first place. And also showed what your right hand was playing as well. You appear to be a excellent guitar player, but as a teacher, you have a lot left to be desired.
@ninjablade42 Stick with it. For most of us it takes quite awhile but when you have it. Its yours and its free and you get to keep it the rest of your life if you just play it once in awhile. What could be better than that?
Its funny about 40% of the comments is how hard this piece is and impossible his way of teaching. Ofcourse it's not easy. He said so in the first video. It's not the most technical piece out there but certainly not easy. He breaks it down a big deal, so take your time and grab some dedication and play. Practice makes perfect eh? :]
@Flaphand Your comment is right on. It takes time to get to where the left hand fingers automatically land in the right chord shape on the right strings, when the piece is "under your hands". The only way to get there is practice, There is no fast way to teach your fingers where to go. But when you get it you get to keep it for your whole life, and its free.
I've played Classical Gas from Handmade on my Oskar Teller since 1971, absolutely correctly for 25 yrs note for note Learned listening 1000's of times to a tape recorder, Sony Walkman, MP3 when jogging or walking. Yrs ago I used a "phrase sampler" with a rheostat to hear it in slow motion. I watched others, Williams, read tabs. I tabbed it in 2011. Send SASE for 3 oz. to S Carter, 405 8th Street NW, Hickory, NC 28601. I'll send you a free copy. You're right no one tabs or plays it correctly.
@Parsnipification. Trust Me on this, These lessons presume that you have the tab in front of you. You are going to waste alot of time trying to learn this from the videos only. When you get the tab (I tell you about where in the description boxes) you are going to say to yourself. "Now I get it" . Have fun -Art
@Brynjulvify Trust me, you are trying to learn a song that most regard as difficult . It might take you a month, or more depending on how long you've been playing Don't give up. Whgen you get it you are going to say it was worth it. Better yet. You will have it for your whole life.
I'm trying to learn this song, and the first video was good, but you didnt teach the hardest part of these bars.... i still ont know how to do them, you basically just played them
@taekwondude7 The lessons assume you have downloaded the tab. Most who have the tab find they can get it. I tell people that they are wasting their time if they think they can learn this without the tab. Good Luck with it.
remember its just a matter of putting in the time. Lots of people know riffs from famous songs, but you have reached a new level when you can play some all the way through. It means you have paid your dues.
@Pohter I tell everyone they can do this. Its just a matter of putting in your time until your fingers know where to land automatically. practice and don't give up. Remember that it often takes a Pro band a year in a studio to put out an album. I wonder how many times they have played each song before they actually have an album to sell.
@loxoxer Thank you for the comment. Good luck., Its just a matter of putting in the time until your fingers know exactly where to land and land at the same spots every time.
@revedmusic I am actually new at guitar but i really want to play this song properly, my friend says it's really hard for me to play it now.(It's been like 3 months) Your tutorials are making it easier yet if you advice me to play an easier one instead, i will do it.
@loxoxer. Even if you are new to guitar you can do it. the hardest part is learning to bar chord. You wil need to practice doing it alot. In one of the videos I show you how to play C and F back and forth until your family goes crazy hearing it. The trick to playing any part of this (or other songs for that matter) is to play it. practice it, over and over and over until your fingers learn to land exactly where you intended.. There really is no fast way. Its practice, practice, practice.
i downloaded powertab and went to ultimate guitar .com but i couldnt download version 4 for power tab it said "Please note that you must have Power Tab software installed on your computer in order to view this file. Read more what is Power Tab Editor." can you tthink of any reason why??
@granoenelculo1 HI I am talking about "hammer ons" and "pull offs".
1. Strike the string open
2. above the ist fret hammer your first finger down so hard that the note rings.
3. Pull your finger off so quickly that the note now sounds open.
4. Put your finger back down hard at the first fret and strike the note with your 2nd finger right hand. Thats it. You have to do it all fast so the string continues to ring.
Sorry i didnt explain myself, what i meant was that i understand the hammer-on, but what comes after that, the order of thestrings you have to play is what i dont understand in part number 2.So to say the right hand.
And also, i tried to download this program you said but i cant, it doesnt let me...
But thank you for making this video and for answering the question, it really helps =)
@granoenelculo1 In order to download the tab from Ultimate guitar.com you have to have Powertab installed. Its a free guitar editor and player available on the web. When you have it you can then download the tab. You will then see which strings to play. (Be sure to read all my description boxes. from 1 to 8)
@granoenelculo1 Hi sorry your having trouble but until you figure a way to download the tab you will not be able to learn this. My lessons depend on you having the tab. in front of you. When you get it which strings to play will become clear.
2) It part 1 you mention getting the pauses right for the last three tabs. It would be great if you can create an auxiliary video explaining the pauses. It helps to get the flow of the piece right.
so many were wrong i cant beleive it there some other video that comes up first in search but there are so many mistakes this is definately the best lesson i have searcehed a lot!
I have had questions about the right hand. Its standard teaching. the 3 base strings are played with your thumb, and the 3 upper strings are played with the first, 2nd and third. There is no need for the pinky finger at all. So its just standard.
I am using Powertab 1.7 and have tried every version on ultimate-guitar. So far none of them match what you are doing. I read your note that it should have "transcribed by Ray Hewitt". I can't seem to find that one.
im new at fingerpicking, and not trying to knock your lesson; but if i could see your right hand it would help me understand so that i could play this wonderful piece. im almost there by ear...lol...now if i could only feel it. more practice.
btw is the song called gas? i stumbled on your vid.great job wonderful instruction;another camera or pic in pic would be so amazing.
The Mrfrawg You are right but I don't have the program that allows pic in pic. I have always thought that the right hand work for this is simple if you have the tab. Don't try to learn it just from the vids. Get the tab, its free and mark it up. If I had it to do over again I would get the program for pic in pic and furnish corrected tab myself in Guitar Pro or Power Tab or Tabledit. I like Guitar Pro the best (more features for learning).

MidenMarty-Scroll down past all the ones that say Eric Clapton etc. When you come to the list under Mason Williams count 14 down. This is it. It will say Classical Gas ver.4 When you download it you can then see that it says Ray Hewitt.
im sure that, in conjunction with these videos, you could find other videos of people playing the song. you can learn the fingerpicking pattern from them while using the tabs and revedmusic's videos to complete it. but i definitely recommend this video over any other one that you'd find on youtube
Kieth- thanks. I'm deciding if there is a need for a video showing the right hand. Theres been a couple of comments about it. For now what you said is the best advice.
@revedmusic I guess it depends on musical ability and skill. I study music so I naturally have much ear training, I was able to pick it up fine. :) Great work here, maybe a split screen would help some people however, I just listened to the original track along side of your video, it worked for me.
hello sir, thanks a lot for the good video, I am learning this song but find the first part that repeats 4 times very difficult I am not sure if I have the right tab could you possibly email it to me? i have powertab version 4 but it doesnt seem to be the same as your playing it
MoMerks Your PowerTab should say in the upper left, "transcribed by Ray Hewitt". It should also refeence the album at the top of the page "The Mason Williams Phonograph Record". Bar 12 starts with an H and a P under the lines. You are holding an A minor position with your first finger up. to hit the 2nd and 5t strings open then a hammer on with a pull off. I hope this helps. If not let me know.
thanks for the video. these are the best on youtube to learn this song in my opinion. i have been practicing lesson 1 and have the intro down. and i am working through this one now. looking forward to the third.
