maybe the tape's there to keep the insides 'together' if it gets shook in transit.The uk cd digipaks are only black background too.,I have 12, all differing artists, & they're all black.Only bugs me on the larger of my digipaks of which are two.,as they look bare without their cd's.I like this item alot.

@hi2u202 Hm. Yeah I guess you're right about that. I guess I was a bit more psyched about the set when I first reviewed it but in retrospect and with time I've grown to consider it as quite a half-assed design. I mean for the price they're usually asking it's just not that good a set... then again it's all about taste. Personally I'm not crazy about the artwork or the lamp-egg idea... and now that a lot of countries have come out with alternate artwork it really shows things in a new light.

@patrick444u The head is by far the coolest but we're comparing a DVD set to a Blu-ray set so what you gain in cool packaging you loose in picture quality AND additional extras (there's quite a lot of new extras in the egg box set, plus all of the old extras).

@MickeyKnox No. I know there was a french Alien egg featuring DVDs as well but it had nothing extra - just a combo set so there's no more bonus features on that one - just a second format to view the movies.

@discjunkietv Well ... that is possible ... I think the german (I am from Germany) set also contains DVDs - so yes it's possible that it has only 4 Blurays for the movies and DVDs for the bonusmaterials and I just mixed that up :)

Got my alien egg set from UK today as well ... damn, actually I just bought it to sell it because the discs also contain german language soundtracks and it's lots more expensive over here, but ... it looks so cool :)

I love this boxset, I don't know why people say it's over priced? It only cost me £43 more than the standard set, and if it was made out of Polystone it would have cost over a £100 more.

I passed on the egg set. Personally it is over priced for what you get. The sculpt used could of been something much better. The cd style fold out isn't too appealing either. I have the US standard and love it other than the fact that the discs slide in a sleeve instead of a snap style like the UK edition. So far I have watched ALIEN. Visually it looks gorgeous but the audio is not all that great.

@mburlock Yes, the american version is numbered and limited to 5000 copies. The official number of copies made of the UK box set is so far unknown to me, nor is it numbered in any way.

I just have infos about the limitation of the german egg. Its said to be limited to 4500 copies... But many people have been complaining about the painiting and the quality....

I got mine this weekend and I'm so dissapointed:(

The blu rays are just amazing and awesome but the actual sculpt...

Mine has a really nasty seam right on the front going from the alien chin crossing the bottom of the egg/yellow part and going around where the paint is not added correctly. It looks like they painted the top part and the bottom part seperatly and then glued it all togheter leaving a seam that has a light yellow/orangy color :(

i noticed a tape in mine too ! but instead of horizontally pasted, mine was pasted vertically. i really like the egg too, my problem with the egg is that it feels too light to me, i think the base should've been made out of medal or stone, and the egg should've been clay but that would be a pain in the ass to be careful. also the digitpack should be more sturdy but no more complaints than that. it's beautiful to display. terrific boxset, when i saw the alien transfer, my jaws droped

I noticed the tape too...I originally thought it held the bottom plastic holder of the box in place, but I was able to pull it out with ease. Looked for a line in the paper that would to see if the artwork was somehow taped together, but no. So this is a mystery to me as well. Must have been a manufacturing mishap.

Just watched the video. There as some differences between the US and UK set. The US set is number to 5,000 and is printed on the back page with the UPC coding on it. The digipack doesn't not include the center snap holders, it's basicall...y an open glossy sleeve (easy to get remove and you don't have to worry about the Blu-rays getting scratch given the surface.

Thanks for the thorough review. I agree with you about the new packaging artwork taking a while to get use to. It's very different artwork than on all the previous releases of the films. I wonder why they didn't # the UK release.

Personally, I wasn't too happy with this edition... I feel it's too plasticy and I'm not that kean on how the alien and the egg are one mould. I was also disappointed that there wasn't any artwork behind the discs. Overall, I think it was over-priced. Saying that, though, there's still a lot to like about it, so it's not a complete let down and I will probably be keeping mine.

PS. My box also has the tape inside ;)
