Mayes.....for being a new guitar especially....wait till it opens up...the SCGC is nice and balanced....but the Mayes has dancing tones and more depth and rounded....as far as I could hear...lo-fi

Also, one was 6 years old and the other a couple of months old......that's a big difference. Compare them when the Mayes is 6 yrs old.

Your acoustic came out really good. Definately a spectrum of tones apart. Rosewood has that shimmer and bell tone would sound powerful for flatpicking and the SC has a more subtle clear warmth of notes especially when you fingerpicked so it be great for folk. Of course both styles could be played on either but thats what I got out of it.

Lovely guitars and playing, but I always think it's strange when people have comparisons between Rosewood and Mahogany guitars, they're such different tone woods, of course they're going to sound different by nature. But, you have two excellent examples of both and both are 'slope dreds' so cheers! Great Video.

Bobby, nice job on this side by side comparison. The quality really shows the detail of each guitar. I think the Mayes edged it out by a hair, but the Santo Cruz definately has it beat in the sustain. The Mayes just seems to have a shimmer and sparkle on the highs and more fullness over low & mids. The SC reminds me of my dad's old Gibson, with that "dry woody thump". I think that you should make this test again once the Mayes has had some time to age and catch up to the Santo Cruz.

Good demo, so how old were the strings on both of them? Sounds like the strings on the SC might be quite a bit older.

I like both guitars and your playing! No doubt, the Mayes guitar costs much more because of the Brazilian Rosewood back and sides but I find the Santa Cruz, with its Mahogany back and sides to be clearer and more articulate as is general with mahogany. If I had your guitars, I'd be very proud to own them both!

I think the action must be set a bit lower on the SC--I hear some string rattle on the samples.
