Why is everyone arguing about which is faster, if you want solid evidence about which is faster, Mallard has plaque on it which says somthing like " fastest steam Locomotive", which means exactly that, and scotsmans top speed was only something like 112mph, compared to mallards 126 mph.

Maybe the Mallard's streamlining only comes into play at high speed. At low speed its just extra weight.

Its still debated amongst steam engineers if the streamlining of the mallard had any effect whatsoever. With my limited knowledge of aerodynamic (predominantly from being an f1 fan). I dont think the streamlining would make a difference in ordinary use of the loco but for its glory run when it got to 126mph, I guess it could have given a few mph extra.

It does look really cool though!
