The main culprit for Peterson's crash was the starter as he started the race too early, allowing Patrese and Hunt, who started much farther down the grid than Peterson, to be alongside the Swede and the narrow entrance to the chicane at Monza made it a disastrous scenario.
Dear Total, sorry but I do not agree with you; italian Ferrari "Tifosi" have always preferred the car instead of the driver, since the beginning. This means that, in my poor opinion, for the italian fan is better to win a very boring race than arriving at 2nd place in a very funny race; this is valid also for football, for example; the most important thing is to see your team win, even if your team plays the worst football in the world. Bye bye...ciao from Italy!!!
@breakthroughpfs The result is more important than the way you get the win. But, if you win with the best possible way, the victory is much more important.
Hunt hated Patrese for what he thought was his part in Peterson's death. Riccardo was exonerated from blame - indeed many laid the blame at Hunt's door, so his criticism of Patrese is guilt-based.
On that day I started hating Ferrari. I was there and seeing all those italian people being happy because a french driver was winning the race on a Ferrari made me think about how stupid italians are.
Preferring an italian car instead of an italian pilot is something I can't understand still today. By the way, in my poor opinion Patrese has been one of the most underrated drivers, expecially here in Italy. Of course I am italian, but all my respect to United Kingdom!!!
@breakthroughpfs It seems obvious then that you don't understand the mystique of the Prancing Horse to its adoring Tifosi. The Italians went crazy for the Scuderia during the Schumacher years--and he was an Italian-speaking German! What made this day particularly special for Ferrari was that while carrying the shield of Gilles Villeneuve in a #27 Ferrari, Tambay took the victory. To the crowd's perspective, this avenged the hard feelings for the "Peroni" incident in 1982's San Marino GP.
@TotalRecallMedia schumacher always had a terrible italian, so terrible he just used to make not-speaking-italian interviews. in the very rare occasions in which he spoke italian, he showed total absence of practice.
@flipsidedogchop how is it bullshit. Hunt publicly hated Patrese during all his commentary career. It took four years for Patrese to clear his name. Hunt was the main man who blamed Patrese for 78
@Gregz0r1 Indeed, if anything up until when Patrese went off, Hunt had been praising him for a job well done. Yes, there were times when Hunt would be unduly critical of Patrese, but this isn't one of those.
Hunt = cunt. He ruined Patrese's career

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looked like Patrese was taking a number 2 in the car...

This was the spirit of Gilles handing victory to a friend in red.

Is this one of James Hunt's legendary bitter jabs at Patrese?
heliumtrophy 2 years ago 9
@heliumtrophy Either way, Hunt's assessment was spot on. Patrese thought he'd won the race already, and lost concentration.
