The title of this video is very ironic. The best way to cook potatoes for mash is to bake them like a baked potato. Reduces water content rather than adding, also cooking in the skin adds flavour and none is wasted in the water. Scoop out centres and through a ricer/mouli. So much cream was added here is was more pommes puree. Butter is more essential than cream for my mash. Plus wheres the salt and pepper, potatoes will taste bland whatever without salt.
She's dumb. Only cut the potatoes in half, less cuts means less room for error. Don't use the masher she uses, it's horrible. Buy a masher that looks like a weaving of open ovals. Make sure all the water is gone before you start adding ingredients. Only use 1/2 of cream per 3 potatoes, trust me, it's a perfect amount and your potatoes won't be stiff or soupy.
Relax guys "You're Doing It All Wrong" is an opinion based on the person who is making the video. I think her potatoes look delicious, if you don't think so, keep making it your way. There is no 'right and wrong way', but if you want potatoes like hers, then do it her way. That's all it means.
these potatoes are normally used for piping and called royal potatoes pipe on a baking tray and put in oven until crisp but soft in center and normal mash is just seasoned potatoes broken up but i agree way to much cream or milk but if that's what you like nothing wrong with it
you can also add egg and flour to your mash to make potato gnocchi and add cod (fish) flakes and deep fry
the milk is disgusting and not healthy.. I stopped consuming milk years ago and my health became bteter immediately. Just do the potatoes in steam, then mash with steamed onion or carrot. You can add also fresh tomatoes. That is delicious and realthy.
too much cream. Mashed potatoes usually are served with gravy...that creamed mess ruins that. Most chefs want you to mash them, but leave a little texture. Also: can you be any more condescending.
@TheMusclesmagee ...error in spelling is not a grammar error, it's a spelling error. At least I knew the right word, unlike you. Second, you quite conviently side stepped the actual issue I brought up. Attacking the straw man instead of the real issue is quite sad.
@magical11 We are talking about mash potatoes here, stop being a dumbass. It's youtube, not a college term paper. I'm sure he knows the difference between your and you're. Stop acting like an 80 year old english teacher.
@TheMusclesmagee That was what I'm telling her, if you actually bothered to read the comment. She/he was bashing the woman without even trying the recipe, probably trying to act all high and mighty. And if she/he DID know the diff., why use your. It's completely wrong.
As a guy i prepared my first batch of mashed potatoes with the help of this video, it came out exactly as instructed, and i must say i hate "fluffy, creamy, silky smooth" mashed potatoes i wish i would've skimped on the milk.
These are helpful but I hate how condescending they are. I enjoy the "spackle" style potato, but according to CHOW I should visit the guillotine for liking them the "wrong" way.
i love lumps, i love eating potatoes, not drinking them, i swear i've had soups thicker then the potatoes shown. plus if you get a waxy potato you can keep the skin on which adds texture. but ugh the amount of cream i just saw makes me feel sick to my stomach i'm sorry mam but You're doing it all wrong
I love lumps. It helps me know they are home made and not powder out of a box. But I agree that mashing in a food processor breaks down the gluten and turns them into rubber cement.
Who makes potatoes like that??? LMAO....undercooked and in a food processor...YUCK! I'm glad my family has southern roots and we actually know how to cook!!
No salt, pepper or roasted garlic...? If not, you're doing it all wrong... I mean I agree with cutting and cooking steps, but I don't use nearly as much milk and it turns out fine... And in the end, you forgot the salt, pepper and roasted garlic!
Her potatoes look horrid. I'll never understand what is so terrible about some lumps in mashed potatoes. I LIKE those lumps! Also, in the last year or so I've stopped peeling them. I buy only white new potatoes, and so the skins are tender and thin, so they won't hurt a thing if you leave them on.
Honestly, I appreciate what she's trying to do, but I hate how these people say "You're doing it all wrong!" If we can enjoy it and be healthy/happy, it is right. Also, she said the wrong way looked like glue, when really the "right" way looked like glue to me.
the sad thing is I am not American nor Canadian, and the mashed potato that I've eaten are from the school cafeteria, which looks like the one coming out of the food processor. they are still pretty good in my opinion, my parents are science folks, they don't know much about traditional cooking style, so most of the food I eat are done "freestyle" if you know what I mean ;)
cream in mashed potatoes. no. milk and butter. But everything else I agree with one hundred percent. Although don't add all that fluid. The potatoes won't absorb it like she says. It will be like soup.
This is so subjective. Who made her the arbiter on the correct way of making mashed potatoes? Oh her mother taught her, and of course, mom's always right.
Who cares if you use a potato masher, a fork, or a food processor? The end result if similar.
I don't think it is possibly to incorrectly make mashed potatoes. My 5 year old neice just made some. And hers wouldnt kill you due to mountains of salt and cream. heating the potatoes afterwards can make them crusty and burn, and you should stir a lot with a wooden spoon afterward to make them "fluffy".
Bake your potatoes. Scoop them out of the skin. Mash them with a little butter and season. Thats it. This video is stupid and probably the main factor behind Americas obesity crisis.
I'm from Norway, and us Norwegians, we like ourselves lumpy pebbly potato mash, even the so called "sticky glue paste" subtance. So yeah, it's a no hitter in my country. :P
My mother makes quite a good mash, but THIS recipe is even better, I added 4 dl milk and 1 dl cream to the mash (1-1½ kilo potatoes)- my family LOVED it and I'm the hero of the day!! *LOL* We also ate fried salmon and bearnaise-sauce to the mash! I guess a good roast or some steak would be lovely too, ribs maybe? But then chose another sauce fit for the food!!
too much cream? just stir over heat till the excess liquid evaporates out of it. Another reason could be you didn't dry-cook the potatoes enough either
Mashed potato just needs a knob of butter or vegan spread to lubricate the starch, and a splash of milk / soy milk / rice milk / oat milk to loosen it, a grind of salt and pepper, and that's all.
Potatoes made that smooth and creamy are creamed potatoes, rather than mashed potatoes, which are great if that's what you want.
Mashed potatoes arent aspose to be pure white... They're aspose to have a little yellowish color from all the butter you added but since u added 2 cups of cream to 1 and a half cup of potatos .... you screwed it up
You ever eat mash at a nice restaurant and thought, "wow, how come these are SO good"? It's because they are about 60% cream and butter by weight and have plenty of salt and white pepper. True story.

@bioroid09 you need more than 1/2 a cup, but it depends on how many potatoes you use. You need to almost cover the potatoes with the milk (it does start out soupy like in her video) and stir it over low heat. It will thicken over the heat as you keep stirring it. Good luck.
Way too much liquid, you want (well i do anyway) a potato that's light and fluffy and will stand up like egg whites, not soupy that flattens out in a bowl
See... I've agreed100% with ALLthe other "your doing it wrong" videos you've posted, but I must say I dont agree with this at all. I hate when there arent any texture in the mashed potatoes. I want there to be a bit of bite, so its not just a potato soup gone wrong. I was actually a bit supprised you dont know taste is different fromhuman being to human being.
@Belindashort Thats my paint exactly; its a better of taste. I HAVE tried mashed potatoes this way. My uncle lives in Chattanooga Tennesee and made mashed potatoes like that last I visited him. While I dont dislike it, I like my "own" version better. This just seems like a thick soup. Taste fine, its the texture I have a problem with.
@Xxjaguar123xX lol I freaken laughed out loud when reading your comment! I was going to say doesn't anyone actually mash their dang potatos nowadays? I saw another video and the lady was using aa mixer handle thing, like I just have one of those lying around ha. So when I saw this I was like dang I need a food processor?! lol
There is no WRONG way to make mashed potatoes...there are just different ways. Your way is just a different way....but if there was a wrong way to make them, it would be your way!

@Tonseren You must not have had them like this, because they are SOOOOO much better this way. Flavor-wise, as well as texture.

@Tonseren Correction: "a MATTER of taste" not "a better of taste" Ofcourse :)

There is no WRONG way to make mashed potatoes...there are just different ways. Your way is just a different way....but if there was a wrong way to make them, it would be your way!
