i broke my right clavicle in january last year and i just re-broke it 6 days ago. is it tottaly fine to get this plate put in even if im still growing? if i did, how long would the rehab take? thanks!
I broke my collarbone about almost a year ago now, I did not get surgery for it. It has now healed and i have the same strength in it as i belive i did before. However i now notice that my left shoulder is now shorter in length compared to my right. The bone over lap. I also get discomfert on the back of my neck/back on the side i broke it on. And when i raise my shoulders my right side makes a poping sound, it does not hurt i just dont know if somthings not right. Do i need surgery?
It is videos like this that make me realize I could never be a doctor. I mean, I have a strong stomach (I'm fine with blood. I can watch the butcher with sheep and chickens and cows fine) but I just could never do this to someone human.
i broke my left clavicle in july and had to wait 2 weeks for the dr to realise he needed to operate, it was broken in 3 places and dislodged on the left hand side, the op went ok but it was a pritty long recovery and all i wanted to do was play football again :)
Broke my right clavicle 4 weeks ago. I broke off clean into two pieces right in the middle. ER Dr. said I probably needed surgery. My other sort of Dr. didn't even look at it and said I didn't. Crappy Dr. looked at it after a week. I still had tenting of the skin and my whole shoulder was blue. So I waited 3 weeks, went to see the crappy Dr., he actually felt it, sent me to get an x-ray. Then tells me I need surgery. Didn't refill my meds, and sent me off. I feel a tearing in my shoulder hourly.
i broke my left clavicle 2 weeks ago. Its really dislocated and has broken pieces floating. One side is really poking my skin and if looks BAD. You can see the bone outline on one side of the clavicle. My orthopedic doc said no surgery needed but others said its an option but their are downsides to surgery. Nerve damages are often. Can i get your opinion? I want to have a fully functional shoulder. thanks
I am sorrry, but I don't think I agree with the doc. I have not found nerve damage to be an issue. A crooked bone is always an issue. Perhaps its time for a second opinion.
@rooshka92 i just broke my left clavicle on saturday and had my surgery on tuesday. mine was snapped all the way through and had 3 fragments floating. im 15 and play alot of sport. i decided iwanted surgery since it would heal faster. the doc said it was optional for me too. It was deffinately the rigth chose! before the surgery it hurt sooo bad to move at all. its been 4 days and im walking around the house woithout a sling of anythind but i have to keep it cover
I broke my left clavicle on Friday 8/5/11. Its broken in two spots very close together. The two pieces of bone are siting on top of each other. I assume it will not be able to heal on its own this way. Is surgery a likely outcome? thanks
p.s. I'm on Vicodin and muscle relaxers so sorry for the grammar.
Hi! This is like a scream of help here... to make the long story short, I broke my collarbone in a car accident 3 years ago. It was supposed to be operated but never happened, so it got shortened pretty much(beside the bump) and my sternocleidomastoid got very tense, a doctor said that my shoulder has a good movement, but I'm a drummer wishing to become professional, and I don't feel as good a before,A surgery will be something to consider? surgery consequences?
Pretty amazing video although my shoulder started to ache as i watched it. I broke my clavical in 4 places during a soccer match and just got released to play again but now I am very timid during the games. I hope it goes away before college season starts again. Thanks for sharing Doctor!
Doc; what was the INITIAL surgery this patient had from their first surgeon that failed? Absolutely amazing video (though seems so violent with the dissection and retractors). Thanks for posting. Had a Rockwood pin first (failed) then later had a Synthes plate with a femural bone graft ('mostly' successful) though the plate must be removed in 2 weeks (just 2 weeks shy of a year later). You can see my video of the 15 month ordeal (so far). Click on my user name.
@NapalmPuppet Be honest...how severe was the pain? As in what type of pain? Sharp shooting pain or just constant agonizing pain? I go for surgery on Friday, April Fools Day! Shit!

@AlbyShore44 Is it fractured (broken) or dislocated? Mine was dislocated meaning it had ripped away from the tendons that hold it in place. DR said I had to have surgery asap as It wouldnt heal properly otherwise. As for cost i dont know. We have the NHS here.
Im having a Temporary plate put in this weekend as Ive too have dislocated my clavicle. The Dr said the recovery pain is intense. Wish me luck guys lol.

And i have a serious problem in moving my right hand with a lot of pain as it is where i have broken my clavicle bone.

I end up watching this video because i was curious how the doctors did the surgery of my broken clavicle.... wtf... having general anesthesia rocks....
@sandersclinic I have a similar plate on my right clavicle, shoulder, humorous, radius and ulna, I also have one on my scapula. It's been two years since my accident and concurrent surgeries, now I'm looking to have some hardware removed for more range of motion on my shoulder. Any suggestions on what hardware to remove and also if i should get reverse shoulder replacement?? Thanks :D
Going in on 07-15 to have a plate fuse my break due to a blunt trauma injury as a result of a motorcycle accident... I am hoping for positive results and a quicker heal than the Sling and swath!
Dear Dr. Sanders, is that a 7.5 inch Ruskin rongeur at 1:44? It looks incredibly small, smaller than 7.5, unlike anything I have seen and I want one! Also, very nice ORIF, very clean and organized, easy to understand, and lastly, your instruments are very clean, even the ones somewhat prone to corrosion (such as the bone-holding forceps) and I love to keep my instruments clean because I have OCD. This is clearly a well-maintained professional clinic and I give you credit.
I broke my clavice about 4 years ago, I had surgery 2 plates and 8 screws here recently Ive been carrying alot of weight on my shoulders with a back pack and it has cause me alot of pain? it feels like ive lost some of my strength in the arm the collar bone was broke are these things common? or something I should be worried about thanks
im waiting for this surgery imvery scared because im drummer so i dont know if im going to be alright :S so im hope this goes well (sorry for the bad englis :) )
I fractured my left clavicle during the bike portion of a triathlon on 5/2/10. I just experienced this surgery 3 weeks ago and I have to admit, I almost feel back to normal. I have a plate with 8 screws, one of the screws are actually going through my bone were the fractured was. Thanks for the visual!!
Does everybody that has had this surgery have to get it takin out too????? My Doctor never said anything about getting it taken out and i had this surgery a month ago and im almost all the way healed and have all of my mobilety back and i really need to know if i have to get it takin out or not...
I just had this surgery 2 days ago and i already feel almost back to normal exept for a little bit of pain. But part of my arm is still numb... Is that normal?
@missarahann yes I had surgery aug last year and its still healing now I got the nerve damage as well starting to get feeling back alittle now but dout it will ever be the same again just hope it dont all come back then they take it out and have the nerve damaged again lol
@justthatgrl12 yes the surgeon told me that its nerve damage the feeling may come back but I only got a little but of my feeling back and its been nearly a year now
Is similar to What Lance Armstrong had after he had 12 screws & a plate inserted on his 4-part broken clavicle from the Spanish crash in March 09? thanks
Sandersclinic >> I broke my collarbone about 4-5 years ago. I just recently found out that there has been some shortening of the bone and that's why my shoulder is thrusted forward. Is there any way to correct this? I'd really appreciate an answer! Thanks.
@sandersclinic Great! Would you consider this to be a risky surgery (generally)? I've searched the web and could hardly find anything. Is it a common procedure? Thank you so much!
@sandersclinic Thanks! What is the prognosis after surgery? Does the function return to "normal" or do you usually feel something where the cutting has been made (when for example carrying a backpack or using your arms during heavy liffting)?
I had an operation of clavicle like this on the video, about a month ago. I am glad I havent seen it before the operation. It looks terrible from a surgeon perspective...
@MarkLKJ I got the same thing mate broke mine in 4 places I do boxing and had a little go at juijitsu only just been back to boxing but aint sure how long till I can do juijitsu again how are you getting on now with yours if you dont mind me asking
@formidablepower harsh man. mines coming along i didnt need surgery even tho i had a 200 % displacement, and ive got most of my mobility back. i just gotta wait till july then i can start training again. how did you break yours? sounds pretty bad
@MarkLKJ I done it on a stag doo fell onto a marble floor onto my elbow pushed my shoulder out of the socket broke my clavical in 4 places and the shoulder joint broke two upper ribs aswell a few people fell on top of me lol I gotta go back in july as I may need a bone graft yet but I hope not then if it has healed I'll have to have the plate removed,Im glad you didnt need surgery hopfully mines ok for next session as I missed some fights last session and couldnt have any this one.
@MarkLKJ The plate don't feel to bad to be honest just the screws you can see them through the skin but hopefully when I go back in july the bone would of healed. The worst thing is if the screws get knocked but hopefully I'll be able to have the plate removed then it will be the skin healing and hopefully that will be it then.
@formidablepower nice i kinda thought the plate would be cool to have since your clavicle would be much stronger but i didnt take the screws into account. im sure youll get the plate taken out soon if the bones making good progress, my dr says mine will be stronger then before since i have alot of callus forming. i bet your scar is pretty big
@MarkLKJ it's about 4 inches.I would want to break it with a plate in though all got quite a few major arteries running down that area I just hope my bone has started healling now the last couple of years it's been one injury after another done something to my knee as well got to see consultant about that next done it falling off a motorbike lol but what don't kill you only makes us stronger they say.I'm glad yours is healing well.Have you got back training yet
@formidablepower lol im a little prone to injury aswell. ive just been doing some light boxing at home, i arm curled 20 lbs today and it hurt a bit so i stopped. at least i have alot of motivation built up for when im fully healed lol
@MarkLKJ I didnt mind the injuries so much when I was younger but now I think my bodies had enough now I'm nearly 30 not many bones I aint broke to be honest. I think it's time for someone else to get the injuries lol. As for that pain in your arm do you have it in the arm you was doing the jab with as that could be a little bit of repeatative strain had a few little pains and stuff in elbow, wrists from Boxing gotta watch your rotator cuff in the shoulder as they get quite worn as well think Im
@formidablepower lol ive been a bit more fortunate, my worst injury so far is my clavicle. the pain is in my jab arm but its where the bone reconnected not so much my shoulder. my right peck , bicep, and forearm are noticeably bigger then the left side, kinda gross but ill be hitting the weights a lot harder when i can. have you looked into rotator cuff exercises ? i wouldnt mind starting some
@MarkLKJ yes I've been shown a couple of rotator cuff exercises but I probably look to see if theres anymore. I was told though tthat if you damage your rotator cuffs they dont ever really get completely better.
@formidablepower and that my friend is correct. its soo stressing man. I injured my rotator cuffs about 7 months ago and i still cant lift 30 lbs over my head. its soo annoying the fact that it never becomes the same. Also the grinding sounds/feeling never goes away either!!1
@thepakibye Yes it is annoying aint it the times when you could chuck the weight up then after you hurt the rotator cuff the weight just don't move but you can feel the strength in all the other parts of your arm or shoulder.I agree very stressing
I've just had this exact surgery except mine wasn't for a sports injury, I was born with it. The proper name is 'Non-Union Clavicle'. Well I had my operation on February the 1st 2010 and today is February the 11th 2010. So I've got 11 days till my 17th on the 22nd which I could of got my P's, But I'd rather be fixed I think. I've already gone four days without pain killers, That's got to mean that it's healing obviously.
It can be fixed, but most orthopaedic surgeons would be reluctant to rebreak it just to imporve the bump. If you had pain or weakness it could be considered.
edit: it's not an arthroscopic approach but rather a burring
Dr. Sanders, how do you feel about this? I haven't experienced much shortening of my clavicle at all and everything has mended together great, but the calcium buildup and jagged bone sticking up really really bothers me. I have gone through a great deal of depression because I can't wear a guitar strap while standing up without feeling like the bone is digging into the inside of my skin. I've quit my successful band because of this :(
im recovering from my third surgery on mine in the past year.
broke it three different times, got metal and 6 scrwes in the first surgery, took them out second surgery and shaved off calcium buildup, broke it two weeks ago for third time, got third surgery 5 days ago putnig 7 screws and titanium in.
now that hurts. kinda cool to watch this shit though since that was me 5 days ago hahaha
Cool!!! A day before I assisted an op, also a clavicle fracture, a straight plate (6 cm) was inserted through 2.5 cm incision without IRC. Only X-ray at finish.
Thanks for the information. My daughter may need clavicle surgery tonight/tomorrow because of a skiing accident. The x-rays may indicate a nasty break. She is in transit now.
lol - my husband had gone to get her & I was at home with my other kids. Turned out no surgery needed, she is getting out again despite being strapped up.
i am 15 and i snapped this in half and it also has a floating bone between this stuff... (i have surgery on tuesday) this is gonna suck... i gonna get plate and screws......=( disgusting though...
Ive had a surgery on my left clavicle after snowboarding accident. If somebody needs a advice or any thing like that you can just email me and i will explayn you everithing
thats ok.. you will not need a surgery whit that kinda fractures .. i broke my collarbone 3 days ago .. still painfull.. but surgery is very rare whit collarbone fractures
Dont you guys feel neglected. Like if your not good enough to get surgery. Just kidding, within the past five years doctors are just figuring out badly broken clavicles need to be plated or else they can cause shoulder problems.
I am glad that I saw this film, I had a surgery on my left clavicle , they says it took about two hours to put pieces together , cuz it was really difficult fracture
me too, i fractured mine in 3 places and they said if they left it any longer before surgery it would have punctured my lung, and i had a plate and 6 screws put in how many did u have???
dont worry i had it done on 23rd march 09. it was ok after a few days. i had a plate put in my forearm a few yrs bk in the recovery was longer and worse then this. you'll be fine
u wer right its no way as painfull as i thought it was going to be,its just a little strange as wen i get cold it feels like i can feel the plate init and its rather gross.!! lol.
Just got home from having this done haha it wasn't bad, just a sore throat from the breathing tube

That is so fucking crazy! I'll drill a chuck out your leg and pack it in between the bones up top? Wtf?!
I broke my collar bone on 4/9/11 I got appointment for docs on 19/9/11 to discuss what to do next...
Mines simple I'd say. One clean brake.
I might try sling it up proper see if it heals back.

Thanks :D
dakirbyguy06 1 year ago
@dakirbyguy06
Reverse total shoulder results deteriorate in the second five years. They are indicated in people over 70.
PLates and screws can be removed if the bone is healed and there is specifc hardware related pain.

I fractured my left clavicle during the bike portion of a triathlon on 5/2/10. I just experienced this surgery 3 weeks ago and I have to admit, I almost feel back to normal. I have a plate with 8 screws, one of the screws are actually going through my bone were the fractured was. Thanks for the visual!!

very successful surgery for me. i definitely want to get this plate removed soon though; heavy backbacks and seatbelts are annoying

Is similar to What Lance Armstrong had after he had 12 screws & a plate inserted on his 4-part broken clavicle from the Spanish crash in March 09? thanks

@peterahughes
Lance had way too many screws inserted through that same plate that we use.

@sandersclinic Is that like a 5" Ruskin rongeur at 1:44? I haven't seen a rongeur that small yet. Nice ORIF for the record, very well done.

Sandersclinic >> I broke my collarbone about 4-5 years ago. I just recently found out that there has been some shortening of the bone and that's why my shoulder is thrusted forward. Is there any way to correct this? I'd really appreciate an answer! Thanks.
clabbediablo 1 year ago
@clabbediablo
The bone needs to be cut along the same lines as the original fracture, the bone has to be realigned, and fixed with a plate.

@sandersclinic Great! Would you consider this to be a risky surgery (generally)? I've searched the web and could hardly find anything. Is it a common procedure? Thank you so much!
clabbediablo 1 year ago
@clabbediablo
Its not that common and it isn't very risky at all.
sandersclinic 1 year ago
@sandersclinic Thanks! What is the prognosis after surgery? Does the function return to "normal" or do you usually feel something where the cutting has been made (when for example carrying a backpack or using your arms during heavy liffting)?
clabbediablo 1 year ago
@clabbediablo
The prognois is a normal shoulder. Uncommonly folks complain about the plate or incision related issues, even when carrying a back pack

@MarkLKJ I got the same thing mate broke mine in 4 places I do boxing and had a little go at juijitsu only just been back to boxing but aint sure how long till I can do juijitsu again how are you getting on now with yours if you dont mind me asking
formidablepower 1 year ago
@formidablepower harsh man. mines coming along i didnt need surgery even tho i had a 200 % displacement, and ive got most of my mobility back. i just gotta wait till july then i can start training again. how did you break yours? sounds pretty bad
MarkLKJ 1 year ago
@MarkLKJ I done it on a stag doo fell onto a marble floor onto my elbow pushed my shoulder out of the socket broke my clavical in 4 places and the shoulder joint broke two upper ribs aswell a few people fell on top of me lol I gotta go back in july as I may need a bone graft yet but I hope not then if it has healed I'll have to have the plate removed,Im glad you didnt need surgery hopfully mines ok for next session as I missed some fights last session and couldnt have any this one.
formidablepower 1 year ago
@formidablepower thats brutal, i hope everything heals up good. how does the plate feel ?
MarkLKJ 1 year ago
@MarkLKJ The plate don't feel to bad to be honest just the screws you can see them through the skin but hopefully when I go back in july the bone would of healed. The worst thing is if the screws get knocked but hopefully I'll be able to have the plate removed then it will be the skin healing and hopefully that will be it then.
formidablepower 1 year ago
@formidablepower nice i kinda thought the plate would be cool to have since your clavicle would be much stronger but i didnt take the screws into account. im sure youll get the plate taken out soon if the bones making good progress, my dr says mine will be stronger then before since i have alot of callus forming. i bet your scar is pretty big
MarkLKJ 1 year ago
@MarkLKJ it's about 4 inches.I would want to break it with a plate in though all got quite a few major arteries running down that area I just hope my bone has started healling now the last couple of years it's been one injury after another done something to my knee as well got to see consultant about that next done it falling off a motorbike lol but what don't kill you only makes us stronger they say.I'm glad yours is healing well.Have you got back training yet
formidablepower 1 year ago
@formidablepower lol im a little prone to injury aswell. ive just been doing some light boxing at home, i arm curled 20 lbs today and it hurt a bit so i stopped. at least i have alot of motivation built up for when im fully healed lol
MarkLKJ 1 year ago
@MarkLKJ I didnt mind the injuries so much when I was younger but now I think my bodies had enough now I'm nearly 30 not many bones I aint broke to be honest. I think it's time for someone else to get the injuries lol. As for that pain in your arm do you have it in the arm you was doing the jab with as that could be a little bit of repeatative strain had a few little pains and stuff in elbow, wrists from Boxing gotta watch your rotator cuff in the shoulder as they get quite worn as well think Im
formidablepower 1 year ago
@formidablepower lol ive been a bit more fortunate, my worst injury so far is my clavicle. the pain is in my jab arm but its where the bone reconnected not so much my shoulder. my right peck , bicep, and forearm are noticeably bigger then the left side, kinda gross but ill be hitting the weights a lot harder when i can. have you looked into rotator cuff exercises ? i wouldnt mind starting some
MarkLKJ 1 year ago
@MarkLKJ yes I've been shown a couple of rotator cuff exercises but I probably look to see if theres anymore. I was told though tthat if you damage your rotator cuffs they dont ever really get completely better.
formidablepower 1 year ago
@formidablepower and that my friend is correct. its soo stressing man. I injured my rotator cuffs about 7 months ago and i still cant lift 30 lbs over my head. its soo annoying the fact that it never becomes the same. Also the grinding sounds/feeling never goes away either!!1
thepakibye 1 year ago
@thepakibye Yes it is annoying aint it the times when you could chuck the weight up then after you hurt the rotator cuff the weight just don't move but you can feel the strength in all the other parts of your arm or shoulder.I agree very stressing

@MarkLKJ I think I'm a dr now all the injuries I've had lol

I've quit my successful band because of this :(
bridsmath 1 year ago
hahah aint nothing.
im recovering from my third surgery on mine in the past year.
broke it three different times, got metal and 6 scrwes in the first surgery, took them out second surgery and shaved off calcium buildup, broke it two weeks ago for third time, got third surgery 5 days ago putnig 7 screws and titanium in.
now that hurts. kinda cool to watch this shit though since that was me 5 days ago hahaha

All surgery is serious. Videos of surgical procedures are not for everyone. There seem to be three types of people out there who see these videos
1. People who are grossed out
2. People who cant wait to do that work themselves
3. People who can't imagine what kind of person could do such a thing.
Its the end of the journey that counts, hot how you get there.
Good luck.
