My two absolute favorite characters in the movie. I was really upset to see them kill off Adler though - I've had my suspicions that she might still be alive but as stated, Moriarty leaves no loose ends. I adore Moriarty though, his character is chilling perfect, brooding and oddly enough, attractive.

@SSherlockE I sympathize with you. I like Irene too. It sucks if it's real. It doesn't make sense for them to kill her off. I wish they'd put her in the 3rd film as well...however, I'm afraid to say I may have fallen for James Moriarty in this movie :(

Irene is dead, Sherlock dropping the hankerchief in the ocean symbolized him letting her go. Moriarty wouldn't keep her alive because Holmes loved her. Moriarty and Sherlock have near if not complete equal intellects, Sherlock outsmarted Irene before, odds are Moriarty can do it too.
