@dancinnanci It's tough to compare both as the genres are so different I'd look at one fundimental part of the kit 'The Snare' Buddy Rich was way better and would blow Carter out of the water. His snare work isn't even close. Don't get me wrong, Carter is awesome but there are session musicians out there who can do this stuff. Check out the: Buddy Rich stick trick solo vid that is on here and see Buddy's snare work.

I'm sure Carter would agree that Buddy was the master. Enjoy.

No. Buddy Rich's hand chops far, far, far, FAR outweigh Beauford's. Rich could do things Beauford will never be able to master in his lifetime. And I'm not a big Buddy Rich fan. A lot of this drum solo is just double bass stuff that sounds impressive but is not nearly as difficult as the rudimental mastery that Rich displayed.

Carter is just enjoying himself in this video...it isn't close to what he's capable of. If you want to see him at his absolute best, exhibiting speed, dexterity and chops in the cleanest possible fashion, I suggest you watch his instructional DVD. Many clips of it on youtube.

@LambdaAutomaton Well i completely agree with you the Buddy Rich was one of, if not the best drummer of all time. fabulous talent. HOWEVER, he only played on basic drum kits. If he was given the kind of drum kit Carter playys, he wouldn't know what to do with it. carter's drumming is much more complex and if he (carter) were to play on a simple drum set, he would have it mastered just as well or better than Buddy, thomas lang or anyone else. Just my opinion :)

I'm curious, what exactly is carter doing when he's performing his infamous riff w/ the cymbals and snare (1:11). It sounds like triplets. hitting a cymbal on the 1 and snare on the 'and-a' (1-and-a). in my mind that would look like alternating left and rt on cymbal (same way you would accent the beat). but in all of the videos it looks like he's using both hands for the cymbals... is it just basically doing a flam on the beat?

my best guess from watching this video is that carter is doing swiss army triplets on the snare and cymbals.

Swiss army triplets include a flam on the beat, like you guessed, but the sticking is not alternating. Look the rudiment up if you havent heard of it.
