This is a great cultural dance, and i think its great for students in a choir to learn something with such depth. Usually these dances are done by tribal men, which is why i think its cool that these girls are doing it.
This is really cool. It's really neat to see that there are colleges out there that embrace ALL kinds of music in all it's forms. It's awesome that you girls are immersing yourself into another culture and teaching others about it as well. Good job!
This is wonderful! I'm studying to be a choir teacher right now and this has offered me loads of inspiration. I was in this choir 7 years ago! The thing to remember here is that these are 7-9th graders. Wonderful job ladies!!! And way to go Bruno!!!
Ooo nice! I think that if you like this one than watch out for a new doc that should come out in 2009 called Bali - Sacred and Secret - I believe there's a website with that name
A brave attempt. I now expect a hate mail campaign but ethnic male cultural traditions (like this) do not usually survive being performed by a) caucasians and especially b) caucasian females. Compare the balinese version in the Baraka movie, and see what I mean.
No hate mail campaign - that's not what we are about. I don't wish to engage in a huge conversation about this, but I do wish to let you know that a) this is an octavo published in the US for children's choirs and b) if we don't do music written for non-Caucasions with a primarily Caucasian choir, we do everyone a disservice. Had we performed this in a western choral style, on risers, with Bel Canto singing, we would be completely out of line. We are here to educate. Thanks for your comment.
yep - figured it's time I joined the computer age... one of our Girl Choir alums let me know this was here, so I signed up (so I could leave you girls a message!). Spread the word that this is here!
not super cool.....

They're students. What better way to learn about the music of another culture than hands-on experience?
