  • yes alot of phones have a death grip, BUT the iphone 4 can screw up the signal by just TOUCHING the bottom corner.

  • Yeah so here

  • this guy is stupid it is an issue with the hardware

  • You have problems with your carrier, these are not iOS related, so you are terribly wrong. The antenna issue can not be replicated in europe on 3G and 3GS, ask yourself why (better GSM networks and coverage).

  • whats that for a funny move between 0:18 and 0:23 ?

  • I've got an iPhone 4 on pre-order. Meantime, I found that when I took my 3G S out of the case, the SAME THING happened -- except the antenna problem is on the lower right instead of lower left. I'm using iOS 4... I don't personally recall whether the OS upgrade matters.

I went to my AT&T store and found that all the display models completely lost their signal when my hand spanned the antenna sections.

P.S., sorry you and all of us have to put up with ill-mannered commenters like euoj.

  • What the heck are you speaking about ! Did you know the iPhone 3G had this problem when it got out (there was no ios4 at this time)... if it was an os problem, the iPhone wouldn't need your hand in order to loose reception ! The only thing is that the problem is kinda bigger on the iPhone 4. That's why this has exploded on the internet !

  • dont worry suppose ios 4 update comming out monday to fix all this bull shit on apples side, im an apple fanboy and will admit THEY FUCKED UP

  • ITS THE SOFTWARE NOT THE HARDWARE!!!!

  • I can confirm that my iPhone 3G with iOS4 drops to the lowest bar if I simple hold the phone in my hands. When I let go the bars go back to full - there is definitely something wrong.

  • I just tested my 3g. full bars no matter how Iheld it.

  • I am using iOS4 on my 3G and i get full signal even after holding it just the way you are holding your iphone :)

  • This is a good confirmation of the iOS4 problem with the 3GS. I have the same problem in Ottawa. It is not just that the bars decrease when I hold it in the left hand, but the download and upload speed decrease too. In a couple of tests, download speed went from 1865 kbps with 5 bars (not holding it) to 658 kbps while holding it in the left hand with reception at 1-2 bars. Hope Apple fixes this.

  • I have a 3GS running iO4 and at worst I can get it to lose 1 bar off full signal covering it completely with both hands

  • Apparently according to Steve Jobs they're releasing IOS 4.1.. that should fix the problem. They are aware it was a OS issue, and not an Antenna issue. as some wacko conspiracy loons said "Jobs screwed up the antenna on purpose so you have to buy their $30 cases". I swear, freaking weirdos.

Anyway... should be available Monday what I heard.. It was clearly a OS 4 issue, good work dragngt.

  • Now we know Apple took out more Nokia Patent infringed technologies. All phones will tend to lose signaling on 3G when you handle them. So it's a combination of patents now gone. If they just paid Nokia instead of playing these games, the 3G would just step down to edge and not lose the signal w/ proper circuitry and firmware instruction sets. Nokia owns the majority of 3G patents, that most manufacturers just pay. But.... NOT CrApple! ..they'd rather just make you suffer!

  • It is not an issue with the firmware. I have this problem with my 3G too and I dont have iOS 4

  • OS4 is SOFTWARE reception is a HARDWARE problem, the issue cannot go away with a software update

  • @bjarkehansen Not according to what they said quote on quote "We will be fixing this issue through a OS update."

  • @Aft3rMiDn1Ght

the Antenna is on the bottom on the phone, and software cannot change that! I have the same problem with HTC LEGEND, the antenna installed on in the buttom.

  • @bjarkehansen Dude, these iphone 3g's and 3g DID NOT HAVE THE PROBLEM until they updated to IOS 4.0. Don't you get that?!

So in other words, it was the software, technology is amazing now a days, look it up.

  • @Aft3rMiDn1Ght

A friend of mine has a Iphone 3g 8GB, with a old IOS 2. is has the problem too. Firmware CANNOT change anything about a hardware problem.. Jobs is many chance something so it LOOKS LIKE its not dropping signal is the IOS software. Install a APP where is shown signal in dbm... an test again

  • @bjarkehansen Then that's a problem with his phone. PEOPLE who have not had problems with it... that are now having problems with it, right after they update to the new IOS 4... Coincidence? I think not...

THINK MAN THINK! Your friend got a fucked up phone, but most of the people having this problem, is the OS 4... which they're releasing 4.1 soon.

  • @bjarkehansen Ever heard of signal processing? Apple may be able to filter out the problem through software.

  • Stupid! It's worse on iPhone 4 because it completely losses the signal. But on 3G and 3GS the bar just go down but never losses the signal. Go buy yourself an iPhone 4 so you know what you're talking about!

  • @euoj I took back my black one because I want the white. I was gonna exchange it at the store if white's came in in limited quantities. However, I've played with my friends iPhone 4 in the mean time.

  • @euoj Your a complete idiot

  • @euoj I have the 3g and it gets to the point where it says "no service" and I have to restart the device or remove and reinsert the sim card.

  • GAY

  • @drzfynest65. I have better things to with my time. I am more worried about the sad state of affairs than a phons supposed issues that a phone case and the way it is held can cure!

  • i have the same thign on my 3g, running 3.1.2 ie not from ios4, if you hold any iphone that way it will lose reception however the iphone 4 has specific issues ie.. certain contacts that will do it, posting a video of my 3g doing same thing withotu a case on it

  • confirmed. just tested it on my iphone 3g, if you hold it in the right spot i can replicate this too.

  • I have both 3Gs that has been upgraded to iOS4 and a new iPhone 4. I CANNOT reproduce this. Hmmmmm.. I doubt your assumptions are correct!

  • @jomale111 Anybody can just say that, but how do we know it's true? Make a video and upload for proof.

  • allow me to make a prediction: bumpers will be bundled with the iphone 4 shortly.

  • it's ur phone problem dude ! mine 3G jailbroken and the signal stays the same when I hold it like that (or jailbroken iPhone make the signal strong?) no way ! ahaha IT IS NOT iOS4 problem !

  • can not confirm that on my 3G with iOS4. Tried everything but the signal bars dont change.

  • its at&t not the phone

  • How can you possible conclude that It's an iOS4-issue without performing a side-by-side comparison to 3.1.3 on a 3GS?

The problem with iPhone 4 isn't directly related to other phones. A danish scientist revealed this even before iPhone 4 launch:

"The human tissue will have an inhibitory effect on the antenna. Touching it, turns a larger portion of the antenna energy into heat and are lost. Because of this, the antenna becomes less efficient to transmit and receive radio signals."

  • Just tried my 3g - the same stuff. But ACTUALLY - I've never had any problems with signal.

  • I just tried that with my iPhone 3G. - No problems!

  • The thing is, I've got an Iphone 3G and I haven't upgraded to 4.0 yet. I'm still on 3.1.3 and when I pick my phone up it drops a couple of bars. Inside a case however, it doesn't drop. I dunno my thinking is that it picking up the iphone 4 the way it's designed means you end up shorting the contacts and cause signal to drop. I don't see why it should matter about software.

And I was really looking forward to my upgrade date :(.

  • Thank you for posting this video. People are really starting to piss me off with this mindless Apple bashing.

And I mean, have you seen some of these videos? People are literally trying the best they can to show that you can block off the signal. Some of them are legitimate, but others are just plain ridiculous.

  • If you cover the antenna on any cell phone you will lower the signal strength. All phones have this issue.... Flesh and water absorbs RF. That is why if you read the manual of most cell phones it says to keep you hand away from the antenna area while using the phone. (All Nokia phones had this message in the manual.)

Every cell phone I have owned experienced this. Put your SIM into another phone, use it in a spot where you don't have a super strong signal (start with 4 bars) and do this.

  • nothing like that on my 3G iOS 4

holding or hiding however you want I still have full bars

  • I have a 3GS here in China running iOS4. My provider is China Unicom. No matter what I do I have 5 bars.

  • my non jail broken 3g does it to :(

  • I put a round Curad band-aid over the seam on the bottom left and mine stopped dropping bars. I know that is not the best thing but until my "bumper" comes...it'll do.

Let me know if it works for you!

  • Part 2: Just tried it with my iPhone 3GS and iOS4. And it confirms my previously comment. Letting the phone rest on a table without touching gives me 4 bars using 3G Picking it up and holding the phone as shown the bars dropp to 0 and the phone switches to 2G network. I remember that this was an issue in the first OS3 firmware that was released and was "fixed" together with the "yellow screen" flaw in a different build.

  • That is pure BS !! IF it is a software bug then there must be a sensor that "feels" your hand touching the phone and only then the so called bug kicks in and the bars drop. Here is my 2c... The flaw was fixed is OS3 to NOT drop bars when the reception went down. However, IF the reception is lousy it will show you only 0 or 1 (or 2 bars). This explains why the iPhone sucks as a phone and is dropping calls more then my 8 years old Sony Ericsson.

  • Is there a reason you unjailbroke it? Was it really slow? That's what I've been hearing about 3G iPhones running JB'd iOS4.

  • I tried it on my brothers iphone 3G that has iOS4 on it and the bars dropped when I held it without the case. I tried it on my own 3G with OS 3.0 and I still had full bars. Looks like a software issue to me too.

  • Could someone repeat the same experiment with a call going on? Would the call get disconnected when the bars go all the way down?

  • Mine does not do that...

  • I have a 3GS running OS 3.1.2. I just tried about 10 times in the last half an hour. I see the very same problem! I did not notice this before. When the phone is on my keyboard wrist pad I see full bar AT&T 3G. When I hold it in my hands and wait for about 15 seconds I see no bar/or 1 bar AT&T E. And this is pretty consistent.

  • this guy is also a fat fingered (and probably just fat) slob, how DARE he try to blur this issue and say it's software when it probably never got 5 bars in his porky hand.

  • @unrealiscrazy

ur a dick. hes just shown a litteral example on the iphone and you attack him because of possible weight issues? you have issues man

  • I also have the 3G running iOS4 not jail broken and I held m phone the same way with both hands and the bars didn't go down....maybe it's cause your phone is jail broke? or you have some kind of magical powers LOL

  • I also have the 3G running iOS4 not jail broken and I held m phone the same way with both hands and the bars didn't go down....maybe it's cause your phone is jail broke? or you have some kind of magical powers LOL

  • My 3GS only drops 1 bar in iOS4

  • huh this is definitely weird. i have an iphone 3G running OS4, never jailbroken, tried gripping the phone the same way you did, but reception stays the same...

  • Show me an iPhone 3G S that doesn't do the same thing and I'll believe this. Otherwise it's just unsubstantiated. If you live in a weak spot for coverage covering up the entire phone will block the signal regardless of the bars you have..

  • dude - this does the same thing with my Samsung Jet s8000. I don't lose all reception but it does get weaker. Human tissue absorbs the microwave energy and it's transfered into heat. Don't forget mobile phones are mini microwaves!

  • I have an iPhone 3G 8GB with iOS 4, jailbroken and ultrasn0w. I can't reproduce this issue, I always have 5 bars.

  • you should jb your phone. on my ultrasn0wed device i dont have that issue :)

  • YES I was able to reproduce the problem on my never jail broken iPhone 4G!

  • this video -> youtube.com/watch?v=03PQyWp0mWE <- clearly shows iPhone 4 dropping calls when the left antenna is covered.

so, it's not software related... or at the least, isn't *exclusively* software related. (btw. cell phones of all types can suffer from a weakened signal due to hand placement.)

  • Great find!

  • No, you're wrong

your hand block the signal, everyone also got like that

iPhone4 has issue on the electrostatic in your hand to liked between two antenna. That's the problem from engineering design!!!

  • @helmsc It's cool. I wanted this up quickly so I didn't think about all the things I should have put in the video and now I'm answering the same thing over and over.

  • Same issue: 3GS 3.1.2! Not iOS4!

  • Mine works finde.

iPhone 3G with 16GB located in Germany. Carrier: Telekom

  • my 3g is running super sluggish with the IOS4 update

  • у меня 3г мегафон, сколько не держал, сигнал не падает.. может быть зависит от силы сигнала и близости вышек?

  • tested ios4 3GS Canada same thing. cheers. apple will fix this.

  • I replicated this exactly with my iOS4 3G that has NEVER been JB. It only happens in my right hand not my left. Very strange.

  • @rstark18 yep, same here. well not exactly the same. In my right hand the bars go down faster, but not completely. I always have 2-3 bars left. On my left hand the bars also go down, but it takes much more time. I don't know were the antennas are placed inside the 3G, perhaps that plays a role, too why it goes down faster in the right hand than in the left. I'll try to restore to 3.1.2 tomorrow, because i never payed attention to this before the whole fuzz that's happening in the last hours.

  • My 3G does the same...... just use a case, this seems to remedy the problem, not sure why....

  • Can't repro this... 3G in Canada.

  • This is NOT just a software problem! The phone loses signal not just bars when held in your hand where you are touching both antennas. When placing a call while holding the middle of the phone it does not lose signal or bars. It is interference with the antenna not software.

  • @helmsc As stated to some other people, the phone was JB'n and I changed the carrier name. When I un-JB the phone the carrier name stayed. I didn't care to re-JB just to put AT&T back on it. So I left it.

  • @dragngt Oh so it had damaged software and therefore voided the warranty. You broke your phone. Congrats.

  • @dragngt good but i dont know why the carrier name should stay after un-JB?

  • My 3G doesn't do this (running iOS4). I'm hoping my iP4 doesn't do this, will test it tomorrow morning

  • Can't seem to replicate this on my 3GS..

  • My 3G phone doesn't do this on iOS4, Strange.

  • I have a 3G and iOS4, nothing different as far a reception, the bars are there in the areas as they were three days ago and the areas where ATT has less bars, it is still, less bars.

  • wrong. i have iOS 4 on my 3G and the 3G retains full reception.

  • @box33 There are mixed reports all over MacRumors with some 3G users having this issue as well as some iPhone 4 owners who don't have this issue. It's really strange. I haven't a clue what's going on but I'm hesitating whether to open my iPhone 4.

  • @box33 mine doesn't my 3g is being super sluggish after the ios4 update

  • @box33 Just that yours doesn't do it doesn't mean everyone's is the same...

  • you mentioned it was jailbroken, have you tried a clean install to see if it does the same thing? I'm getting mine soon and apple better fix this.

  • @freighttrain2126 It was jailbroken last summer. I've had it un-JB since August of 09. Since I got my iPhone 4 today I did a restore on it this morning before all this started. So this is an un-JB iOS4 install.

  • What happens when a speed test is run?

  • I hope so. Because if not then it is a catastrophic fail.

  • My iPhone 2G does this and it's running 3.1.3

I think it's hardware issue across the board, but because the iPhone 4's antennas are touching your hand it's impossible to get away from. Notice how much you're crowding the iPhone 3G there. I've seen one guys touch the iPhone 4 with one finger and it went down to one bar. This looks like a hardware issue folks.

Older iPhone owned didn't notice it cause you really have to crown the phone, which no one tried until iPhone 4's hit the news.

  • Mine has iOS4 and I do not have this issue holding it exactly like yours, and with both hands on it covering all sides.

  • got my 4 today. not really having an issue but this video makes me feel better. ty

  • My 3G doesn't do this, at least not on AT&T 3G network

  • nvm I don't have iOS4. So I think just proved your point.
