  • Yuuuuch ! Bring in the wreaking crew

  • I didn't know that Mike Love was a Catholic priest.

  • Love Dennis' chocolate ball scene

  • I always wished for a recorded version of this somewhere, but the American Band video is the ONLY place I've ever seen or heard it...

  • Oy!!!

  • @stevedrums You can say that again! ;-)

  • Carl Wilson..the voice of the angels

  • thanks for posting- wow- total 180

  • Embarrassing. Why did they think this was a smart move??

  • @ShockDoc they have some wierd opening acts in england 00:10 who is joe hicks [maybe they should have had gene pitney instead] paul revere was overexposed

  • this is fucking terrible

  • @1954telecaster haha!

  • What a twat Mike Love looks in this. I love that cover of the Buffalo Springfield song. I've never heard that.

  • MIKE LOOKING AND ACTING LIKE THE TURD BALL OF THE GROUP

  • @rentatrip1 He was.

  • Superb !!!

  • Who knew?

  • Mike Love the Davy Jones of The Beach Boys!

  • @dumbangel75 If that is a bad thing, I agree!

  • The Beach Boys were a great live act in the 70's, actually.

  • tompetty is an ugly buck toothed fag- beach boys were ok- just not a real great live act. and neither were the beatles- after 1966.

at least mike love is not wearing a dumb hat but he is hopping around like a fag here.

  • How many times did you see The Beatles Live after 66 to know?

  • HEY Selector..We get it! You hate the Beach Boys...Move on already-The Beatles were brilliant, as long as George Martin was pulling the strings correctly. On their own though?? Have you heard any Solo Beatles stuff??? Sounds like George Harrison was the ONLY true songwriter in that band.

  • Well, I don't think just because theselector talks mindless trash you have to put The Beatles as group or solo down for anything & saying George is the ONLY true songwriter & leaving Paul & John out is as absurb as anything theselector said about The Beach Boys. Beach Boys & Beatles had mutual respect. It is true Wilson didn't need a Martin. He had his own amazing self to pull the brilliant strings but don't have to put down one to dig the other. They sure didn't.

  • LISTEN..I love the Beatles, And if we're we going to go head to head on Lennon stuff, the 1st 2 Lennon Lp's are amazing"...BUT..Insulting me just makes you look like a turd. I just love the Beach Boys stuff (circa 1965-1974) and I don't think you could have ever really heard any of it, really. Seriously, the tracks "Surf's Up" & "Feel Flows" are two of the best songs ever recorded. You should really expand your horizons out of that Beatles shadow you're in, there's more out there..

  • @theselector do you get off on being so pissy shallow & lame or can' you just not help yourself? Thanks bunnyhead very cool stuff Cowaqbunga! &. theselector is less than a Hodad from the Valley..:)

  • Ain't it strange how a comment or an opinion about someone's favourite band can have such a violent reaction....why take it personally? Why the personal insults?....If I was insulting your mother I'd understand BUT a band? , C'mon!!!!

  • Not my favorite band & if you want to toss your crap around don't wine & get pissy if you get it tossed back in your face where it came from.

  • Who said I was ONLY referring to you? REDdddddddd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or should that be Red-Neck?

  • I don't care who your referring to or anything you keep on saying over & over like anyone cares what you keep saying over & over like a broken record. Redneck?

If you shut your mouth & open your eyes/mind you will see it's Redwood which is a big tree we have in California & one more thing, I got the pink slip daddy & your just cruzin' up & down the same old strip, you saying the same thing over & over is mindless & un-hip which you seem to be good at but your really boring.

    That's all U are

  • @theselector So you admit you are insulting the Beach Boys. Right. Cabaret? Cabaret bands all over the world cover Beatles tunes. The Beatles are the most covered band of all time. Covered by cabaret singers like Shirley Bassey. The Beatles were VERY MOR. It may really hurt the feelings of Beatles fans but the music has become very dated indeed, as has EARLY Beach Boys - which I am not a mad fan of. Beach Boys 66-73 sounds a lot fresher IMHO.

  • @theselector 'Imagine' - 'Best song ever written'? Not even the best song John ever wrote. You weren't even BORN when all this music was going on. Lay off the weed.

  • @theselector What does this video have to do with the beatles? ....im confused

  • @bunnyhead71 I love the Beach Boys too, but come on. Lennon and

McCartney didn't write good post-Beatles songs? Please.

  • @bunnyhead71 if you read the lyrics john lennon wrote for in my life there were extra verses that didnt make sense [but then a lot of songs dont make sense dont follow leaders and watch your parking meters] when lennon played a demo of a day in the life for crosby he thought it was great nobody seemed to be doing long songs yet

  • I still stand by my comments that The Beach Boys were a cheessy Cabaret style band that mostly sang Surf and Turf songs and can never be placed in the same league as The Beatles. I don't know of many modern bands that sound or even are remotely influenced by The Beach Boys at least NOT any important or successful bands. Whereas The Beatles influence is absolutely immense and will live forever. Don't get me wrong The BB's wrote some catchy Pop songs but they are mostly lightweight & ephemeral.

  • Just to name a few of the UK's greats, who know what you don't

Next time you see Paul Eric & Pete you tell them that only cheesy Americans dig the Beach Boys & how they were the Abba/ Osmond'sof their time.

Think they will be as impressed Bob Dylan would be with you & your facts?

  • selector, you're a fucking idiot! take your bogus opinions and shove em up your ass!

  • Now now , that kind of attitude & language can lead u to the bottle if ur not careful....

  • @theselector As long as it doen't lead me to listen to Oasis ffs...

  • @theselector It's much harder to be influenced by the Beach Boys. It's that simple really. 1,000s ot talentless Beatles copies bear testimony to that. :)

Also, by your reasoning regarding record sales, Ronald MacDonald is the world's top chef.

  • Wow, theselector. Jump of a bridge. What an ignoramus.

If the Beach Boys were such a uncool and cheesy band, why are they America's best selling group of all time?

Such great groups as the Beach Boys and Beatles...shouldn't you be listening to Men at Work? Yawn.

  • Maybe coz America likes Cheesy uncool bands......that's why groups such as The Osmonds , The Partridge Family and Billy Ray Cyrus are/were so big in America coz cheese runs through their veins....

  • What an ignorant comment. Do your research. You probably live in UJ and need new teetjh lol

  • UJ?

  • Comment removed

  • Good -but why is one of the Beach Boys in a bathrobe..?

  • The Beach Boys were such an uncool cheesy band. They looked so dorky it's almost embarrassing and even musically they were always miles behind The Beatles. And what's up with the dude with the tambourine hiding behind Brian? , very unprofessional for a live performance

and that white robe and cape!!! Looks like a celtic druid prancing around stonehenge.... weird!!!!!

  • The guy with the tambourine was Mike Love...he was just dancing around the stage, he wasn't hiding behind anyone. And that's not Brian. It's his brother Carl. If you knew anything about the BBs, you'd know that Brian retired from the road in 1965.

  • They're still a dorky cheesy band regardless and look aweful onstage especially Mr Love (what a hippy name) prancing around like an idiot with his balding head. These guys should've retired in 1964 after all their surf & turf songs went out of style. At least we would have saved ourselves the hell of Kokomo and whatever they did on Cocktail....arghhh!!!!

  • Then why are the BB's Paul McCartney's favorite band? If you don't like them why are looking at their video? Miles behind the Beatles? I don't think so. They were both good just different. They each have an important role in "Rock" history.

  • Paul Mac's entitled to like whoever he wants to like that still doesn't change the fact they were always a day late and a dollar short compared to The Beatles. The reason I saw this video was coz I was looking for the Buffalo Springfield song Rock 'n' Roll woman but man do they look & sound shocking...c'mon dude. they were more of a cheesy cabaret style band than a real Rock Band kinda like The Abba or The Osmonds of their generation.

  • Let's just agree to disagree. I just don't like it when people put down The BB's.

  • You don't know what you're talking about and that's the most obvious thing. The BBs were singing 5-piece harmony in their sleep before you were born and Buffallo Springfield ( who I also like too) used to be their opening act. check your facts. The BBs were never SUPPOSED to be a "rock band". They were a harmony group. BS's version of this song sounded good ON RECORD because they overdubbed the vocals and you are RIGHT ...this is a terrible performance. I don't what they were smoking that day

  • At last someone agrees that this IS an Aweful performance.....probably smoking seaweed!!!!!

  • Paul & John didn't agree with you about Brian Wilson being miles behid them but you can have your opinion. For what it's worth. As they listed to Pet Sounds before you were born & were wowed knowing the BB wern't the Abba or Osmonds of their generation.. John & Paul were smart hip musical guys. Maybe that's why they knew what you don't.?

  • How do u know what Paul & John thought of them? Where's the proof? As I said in a previous quote they're entitled to like whoever they want still doesn't change the facts though....

  • "I consider Pet Sounds to be one of the greatest pop LPs to ever be released. It encompasses everything that's ever knocked me out and rolled it all into one."

    Eric Clapton

You got your opinion but this is facts from all-time greats. You can read for days all the people who know what you don't.

Just pull yourself out of your self & look.

  • Kid, just wiki Pet Sounds & you can read what Paul said about how it blew him away & the infunence Brian had on both Him & John which is well known & that's his facts not your lame un-knowing opinion. If you pull your head out of your ass you can google people like Paul Clapton Dylan Townsend just to name a few who don't agree w/ your opinion.

There is all kinds of proof. That's a fact.

  • If there is one person that I have to select as a living genius of pop music, I would choose Brian Wilson. Without Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper wouldn't have happened... Pepper was an attempt to equal Pet Sounds"

    George Martin Beatles Legendary Producer

  • Paul McCartney

It was Pet Sounds that blew me out of the water. I love the album so much.I figure no one is educated musically 'til they've heard that album .I love the orchestra, the arrangements. It may be going overboard to say it's the classic of the century but to me, it certainly is a total, classic record that is unbeatable in many ways.I played it to John so much that it would be difficult for him to escape the influence ... it was the record of the time.

  • Pete Townshend

I love Brian. There's not many people I would say that about. I think he's a truly, truly, truly great genius. I love him so much it's just terrible - I find it hard to live with.

From my own era I especially admire Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, the Beatles and Brian Wilson. 'God Only Knows' is simple and elegant and was stunning when it first appeared; it still sounds perfect.

  • @nickgui In regards to Pet Sounds it mostly sounds like elevator music apart from God only Knows and Wouldn't it be Nice it's boring endless muzak. And even those 2 songs sound too sentimental in a cheesy teeny sort of way that's pure fairy floss....still they are standout melodies. It's also my understanding that Pet Sounds was a commercial failure when it came out whereas Sgt Pepper sold millions of copies on both sides of the Atlantic. Kinda speaks for itself doesn't it?

  • Don Was

In the fall of 1989, I was working with a band who turned me on to the bootlegged recordings of Brian Wilson's legendary, aborted Smile sessions.

Like a musical burning bush, these tapes awakened me to a higher consciousness in record making. I was amazed that one, single human could dream up this unprecedented and radically advanced approach to rock 'n roll.

  • Graham Nash

He was way advanced of what anybody was doing at that point. And I think the Beatles recognized that and I think every harmony group in the world recognized that there was some different thing going on - something very sophisticated.

  • Bob Dylan

Jesus, that ear. He should donate it to The Smithsonian.

The records I used to listen to and still love, you can't make a record that sounds that way. Brian Wilson, he made all his records with four tracks, but you couldn't make his records if you had a hundred tracks today.

  • Tom Petty

I think I would put him up there with any composer - especially Pet Sounds. I don't think there is anything better than that, necessarily. I don't think you'd be out of line comparing him to Beethovan - to any composer. The word genius is used a lot with Brian. I don't know if he's a genius or not, but I know that music is probably as good as any music you can make.

  • In 2000, Brian was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Paul McCartney introduced Brian, referring to him as "one of the great American geniuses"

Pet Sounds has been ranked as one of the most influential records in western pop music, and has been ranked #1 on several music magazines' lists of the greatest albums of all time. It is ranked #2 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

These are Facts kid, not your bush-leauge snarky lame opinions.

  • Phillip Glass

Pet Sounds became an instant classic.

it was one of the defining moments of its time, along with the music of the Beatles, Pink Floyd and the Greatful Dead.

its willingness to abandon formula in favor of structural innovation, the introduction of classical elements in the arrangements, production concepts in terms of overall 'sound' which were novel at the time, all these elements give Pet Sounds a freshness that, thirty years later, is immediately there for the listener.

  • Hey theselector that enough proof for you? If not I can go on for days with more quotes from all-time greats who know what you don't., You let me know but spare me you talking about facts.

  • All these quotes from some important & influential muso's is impressive but many that you've mentioned are has beens or from bands & individuals long forgotten or who don't have the weight or influence of The Beatles. Those that say that Sgt Peppers would NEVER have been made without Pet Sounds is BULL. The Beatles were always a progressive and future looking band and you can clearly see from the progress of their albums from Rubber Soul to Revolver to Sgt Peppers...

    it's a natural progression.

  • You can tell George Martin The Beatles Legendary Producer what he said is "BULL" & tell Paul that Bob Dylan didn't have any weight or infulence, on The Beatles. You wanted proof. I gave it to you stright from Paul. Argue with him.

  • Philip Glass is considered one of the most influential composers of the late 20th century. Is he one of your has-been's? Him like everyone I named are all well know to anyone musically Hip & most

    All-Time Classic Greats including Paul

& all unlike you they were around at the time. You can stand with what ever you want. I stand with them.

  • They talk so mean to each other. lol. Its like being at my own house. haha. Carl is so cute. And what is Dennis looking at 2:57, his eyes are so big there. :)

  • Thanks for posting this on YouTube. I have the VHS of "The Beach Boys: An American Band" and wanted to hear the song again. It's an excellent version, as good as the original by Buffalo Springfield.

    Christy

  • Couple of points. First, the "American Band" video-biog was initially released in early 1985, and, far from being out of print, is currently available on a 2fer DVD with the 1995 BW documentary "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times".

Secondly, the notion that "R&R Woman" is actually a Beach Boys composition was raised some time ago, researched and rightly laughed out of court. The reason they played it is very simple - earlier in 1968, they toured with the Springfield. That's all.

  • PS: either the video date or venue is wrong - they played Brighton in 1969, not 1968.

  • Omg is there anymore footage like this?! I love seeing this stuff!!!! Thanks so much:)

  • The Beach Boys toured with the BS as the opening act. Night after night, the BS would blow them off the stage. Nice harmonies here, though

  • BS blowing the BBs off stage?? I don't think so!

  • I meant "off the stage"

blowing someone offstage was the infamous George Michael/Frankie Goes to Hollywood tour . Glad to see someone is paying attention,,,,

  • Lol...but I know what you meant! I highly doubt that Buffalo Springfield would one-up the Beach Boys...not with Carl and Dennis Wilson around, anyway!

  • Nice harmonies? Pretty out of tune, if you ask me!

  • I saw them in Jacksonville on that tour. Also on the bill: Strawberry Alarm Clock.

  • nhoner; Ed King, later with Lynyrd Skynyrd, was the guitar player for the Strawberry Alarm Clock on that tour. He said he never missed one of the Buffalo Springfield's sets

  • Wonderful stuff. The bumper car footage at 2.20, looks to be on Brighton Beach, the old rink beside the Palace Pier. A summer haunt for us as kids, but sadly not when the Beach Boys visited.

  • Thanks for sharing this one.. new one for me.

Fantastic to hear them do Rock n' Roll Woman.

  • Sat in on a BB rehearsal in the late 60's for their Chicago show that evening and they were going through R&R Woman ... an early indication they were trying to fashion a more hip image

  • I'm not a huge fan of many of the cover versions the Beach Boys did, but I really feel they hugely improved Buffalo Springfield's version. Nice performance! (except for Mike and that damn robe...)

  • Mike is the cool one according to the teen set magazine [ except for the time he punched the window out on the pimpmobile and spent the night in jail ] .

  • What a drag it wasn't recorded better, but I understand how the sound systems just didn't get it done in those days, and the recording of live shows was equally painful. But the Beach Boys could have killed "Rock and Roll Woman." I respect the Beach Boys now more than ever. They were great. RIP Carl and Dennis.

  • Very cool, thanks for sharing!
