@wretshit Nine Inch Nails' first tour was as an opening act for Skinny Puppy. Skinny Puppy is widely considered to be one the founders of industrial (I know there were very influencial bands before SP, but they cannot be credited for the convergance of sound and rythem to the lengths that SP did.) So.. to answer the question.. industrial was way before Downward Spiral.

I love this vid, it's so awesome. The dude rocking out in the vid is awesome, the added effect makes it so trippy. Music is awesome too, I would say that whatever kind of industrial it is, it's badass.
