The first phrase that Derek plays around 3:25-3:30 is the best intro lick to Elizabeth Reed I've ever heard, even when considered alongside Dickey's volume swells at the Fillmore East.
i remember hearing liz reed played in 99 in kc and wondering because he never played abb covers before... the next week it was announced he was joining the brothers
his popularity has gone up ever since, and deservably so
I've always wanted to hear the Trucks Band without having to tune out the lead singer... and its In Memory of Elizabeth Reed! It must be my birthday. Thanks for the post.
derek is the NICEST GUY EVER...I MET HIM A BUNCH OF TIMES AND HE HAS INVITED ME AND MY BAND TO COME CHILL WITH HIM AT HIS HOUSE IN JACSONVILLE, FL AND GO FISHING WITH HIM hahaha ONE LOVE 420nelove PEACE RIP TUPAC
o sweet that amazing i saw him with clapton in ontario canada he was the best guitarist there doyal was having a bad night and clapton just was clapton:p
you have to remember when people play with their idols they are very reserved and want to be respectful. Take the Albert King Stevie ray cd for example.
i guess in a sense...but most people never view themselves as better than their idols. I think Derek is probably better technically than EC (probably jsut due to age) but to me, EC is the pinnacle of what guitar playing should be
i thought the same way, but i heard trucks saying that he was trying to give it all he had talent wise with clapton and doyle. not to prove whos better he said. but to keep the excitement up, not in like disrespect a gainst the guys but they are competetive when it comes to that.
i think he is washed up. and that tone of his doesnt work for me. its awful. plus he's been playing the same solo for about 40 years. but he is god right?
well everyone has their particular style. Trucks has his signature riffs, so does EC, Hendrix, Santana, etc.
I think EC is better than ever. His playing has so many subtleties now, its not just about power and aggression like it was with Cream (although that was great too).
Doesn't quite have the chops that he will go on to have someday, but that distinctive intonation is there. Impressive work from the young band. After seeing him in concert he has become my favorite guitarist.
man i cant believe how much better he got to tell you the trouth here it seems hes not verry good....but then you listen to songlines dvd and your lick damn!
Derek's opening melody around 3:25 in this version of Elizabeth Reed is haunting, not to mention remarkable for someone who just turned 20 years old. In my view, this video and others from the same time capture the emergence of some of Derek's jazz influences in his playing. For guitar player who is looking for someone's licks to copy, look no further...
Haha..you gotta love the chromatic insanity about 7:00 8:00

It's nice to see what Todd can do, at the first of the movie! I don't think he gets to do his own thing enough.
