  • Nothing dennis hopper makes says any sense in this scene.

  • The poem, The Hollow Men, is one of the great poemsof the 20th century, along with about 20 other T.S. Elliot poems.

  • I love how none of what Dennis is talking about has anything to do with dialectics.

  • 1:05

  • i love marlon brando,i love the movie

  • "This is the way the fucking world ends, look at this fucking shit we're in, man! Not with a bang, but a whimper! And with a whimper, I'm fucking splitting, Jack." --that's what they left out.

  • Mistah Kurtz, he dead.

  • @DudleyScardsdale A penny for the Old Guy.

  • Someone cut this short. The next missing minute is priceless.

  • fu hoppper is perfect

  • search nicolas and the iceni rowan. their music is influenced by eliot. a great refrain in the middle of the song.

  • I swear Dennis Hopper played the same role in every movie till Speed. He was still Billy the Kid here

  • MUTT!

  • I cried.

  • but hopper is right as fucked up as it sounds but its the truth. black and white. i guess the lesson is to combine the two or knowing when

  • I thought Hopper made this scene. But on the extras of the redux it shows Brando reading the entire poem.

  • it's true Dennis Hopper ruins this scene

  • What was that he threw at him....was that a cheeseburger?!

  • Yuup, Kurtz definately hate 'em

  • Marlon looks alot like my great grandfather in this.

Hitler didn't look the same person throughout the war. he came to the united states to do his things more potent than acid and coke. when he turned himself in they cut his legs off and turned him into a formaldehyde centaur, horses head to one of those italian mafia palaces and his legs (he Had invented the things more potent than coke) to south america, my g-grandfather may - been the person to seal the poison spiral death-I know why 143

  • Without Dennis there is no one to hear the word..... And if a tree falls in the woods and no one is around, does it make a sound??? ......Hey, who the hell threw that shoe!!!!!

  • mutt!!! lol

  • brando felt threatened

  • can't go out into space without fractions. that's served ME well so far =)

  • Dennis Hopper ruins this scene. I could listen to Marlon Brando read poetry forever.

  • dennis hopper is the jack rabbit... trying two break his reflections spell

  • @44CaliberCancer Hey its the contrast between profoudity and frivolity that personifies the expression.

  • @44CaliberCancer I believe Marlon felt the same way as you!

  • @44CaliberCancer Without Dennis we don't get the scene,we don't get to see Marlon throw the shoe at Dennis...It was pre ordained..

  • @44CaliberCancer Dennis Hopper is absolutelt fabulous--and necessary to the scene.

  • @44CaliberCancer how dare you say that about Dennis Hopper! Hollow Men is read perfectly by Marlon Brando, but Dennis Hopper is a saint!!!

  • @44CaliberCancer I wouldn't say "ruin"...Hopper is a genius. As is Brando, and if you notice the last second of the clip, Brando shows Hopper who's boss. "I'm fuckin' splittin', Jack."

  • @44CaliberCancer he's supposed to be annoying in this scene.

  • @44CaliberCancer

And Marlon Brando apparently agrees, lol.

  • @44CaliberCancer Absolutely. I wish they could re-shoot it and have Brando recite the whole poem.

  • @44CaliberCancer Read Heart of Darkness; Dennis Hopper nails this character. He is just one of the perfectly depicted characters from the book.

  • *expands his mind*

  • "Do you know what the man is saying? Do you? This is dialectics. It's very simple dialectics. One through nine, no maybes, no supposes, no fractions -- you can't travel in space, you can't go out into space, you know, without, like, you know, with fractions

  • -- what are you going to land on, one quarter, three-eighths -- what are you going to do when you go from here to Venus or something -- that's dialectic physics, OK? Dialectic logic is there's only love and hate, you either love somebody or you hate them."

  • By the way... the TS Elliot poem has little Dialectic overone...it was Hopper 's character who introduced this concept...thus the "MUTT!!!!" from Brando (who disliked Hopper during the filming)...

  • thanks captain obvious. did you know martin sheen is in this movie...

  • @malmswax Dialectic is like teacher student, master and slave right ? So what does Hopper mean that it's concrete ? Is hopper full of it ? I like Hopper a lot, but I"ll admit it if he's wrong.

  • @PopVulure Dialectic refers to a manner of logical argument. Check it out on Wikipedia. Kurtz has one view here and Hopper another view. Neither correct nor incorrect, just a duality of interpretation.

  • this movie is really.... an Apocalipse...not saying it is bad, because it's great, but during the making, Marlon appeared overweight, didn't read the book "Heart of Darkness" that Coppola told him to read, Martin Sheen had a stroke and and Coppola even said that he was going to kill himself....This movie is a phenom in every aspect

  • Ahhh, well just noticed your comments. Just to clarify...Martin Sheen had a heart attack during the filming (not a stroke). Marlon Brando being overweight was a non-issue the studios already hated him (from the Godfather movies)...Coppola had made a bundle off of his previous films...duringhtis movie (and prior) he had spent a bundle on Zoetrope Studios (his film company in San Francisco) and was basically broke...he had a nervous breakdown as well...

  • not true ..brando's issue was a weight and actually impacted how he was filmed. watch the documentary of the making of the movie. you will discover you are incorrect. i hope you take it in stride.

  • fuck hopper, ruins the scene.

  • kill yourself. seriously

  • Comment removed

  • not true he's a dickhead

  • and with a bang and a whimper.....

  • We are the hollow men We are the stuffed men Leaning together Headpiece filled with straw. Alas! Our dried voices, when We whisper together Are quiet and meaningless As wind in dry grass Or rats' feet over broken glass In our dry cellar Shape without form, shade without colour, Paralysed force, gesture without motion; Those who have crossed...
  • Can anyone upload the extended version?

  • mutt!

  • I love Hoppers dialectic explanation. It's hilarious.

Fraction? What you gonna land on when you travel to Venus? One, Two ... :-)

  • why don't you quote the video for those of us who didn't hear it, there's a good lad

  • aw man - the 'this is the way the world ends, not with a bang but a whimper' bit was cut - o well, thanks for posting this anyway.

  • I had heard on Coppola's commentary on the 'Apocalypse Now, The Complete Dossier' DVD set that Brando really didn't care that much for Hopper and right when he throws the book at him that wasn't in the script at all,

Hopper has a look of shock on his face right after the book hits him that's genuine,

It's not acting on Hopper's part.
