70% of New Zealand's electricity is now produced by renewable energy.
Hydro, wind, geothermal and we are about to start a pilot undersea turbine programme.
We're down to 1 coal fueled powerstation and a few gas fueled ones.
It is possible to go renewable.
Here's the rub. The govt has just approved Petrobras to survey offshore with a view to start some deep-sea wells that will be 3x deeper than Gulf of Mexico.
I say if the world moved towards using all clean energy, and cities having more mass transport systems, we wouldent need too drill off shore. Then disasters like oil spills wouldent happen.
its either we let world war 3 happen and kill billions of people or continue drilling oil to sustain our economic growth but that will eventually run out so not matter what earth will kill billions of people, i promise you 98% of posters here will die by 2019
We definitely need to pursue clean alternatives, so we can rapidly phase out oil, including offshore drilling. The sad thing is that these alternatives were available a century ago, but corporate greed pursued/pushed oil instead. May the BP disaster serve as our collective "hitting the wall" to wake up and choose a different course. See our resources at PESWiki dot com. Pure Energy Systems, a news and directory service.
considering how deeply entangled our country is with oil, it's going to take a huge effort to get off it. First off we need to fight all the very rich very powerful people who have a vested interest in keeping up addicted. If money is power, they have the lions share. In my opinion most of these CEO's probably got where they are because they are mild to moderate sociopaths tho care little for others, seeing them as little more than expenses.

Plastic in the interior is made form??? Petroleum.
The energy used to refine the steel, lead, copper, aluminum, lithium, etc. they are made of??? Mostly coal.
The oil in the gear boxes??? Petroleum.
The diesel fuel used to transport them all over the country??? Petroleum.

Fossil free electric cars? Yes, if the electricity is produced in a nuclear reactor. Otherwise, it is most likely produced by burning coal.

why can't anyone just give us the facts.... the bias run to the left is sickening.

electic cars are not fossil free since a majority of our power comes from coal fire plants

@Chevyguy2003
they can be fossil free if they recharge on clean electricity.

Oil is crack for the US. We found it, got on it, and now we're having a hard time giving it up and moving onto better things.
