  • this is sad... i dont see how people could actually do dhat!?

  • BIAS VIDEO. WHERE IS THE OTHER HALF?

  • :-( How did these few individuals survive? It seems as thought the odds were against them. Thank God they somehow made it out. I grieve for the lost souls.

  • this some deep shit

  • This is unbelievably sad - waht a waste of good people.

    Heartbreaking.

  • how did those guys talking manage to escape then? i thought theyd explain in the clip but they didnt :/

  • Comment removed

  • This guy reminds me of (self appointed) Bishop Brian Tamaki.

  • This is INSANE.

  • 3.16 a gun shoot for?

  • Speechless

  • 1:05 to 1:35 it's clear this was forced suicide. People with guns kept these poor people prisoner.

  • Plus the fact that those folks were surrounded by 150 miles of dense jungle, no means of personal transportation, no passports or money? Unless they were magicians, there was no way out.

  • I wonder how many would have chose to live or die if they had the right to chose. I'm sure many would have killed themselves but I often wonder how many would have chose to live.

  • From survivors accounts it seems that many of the members that took the poison willingly assumed that this was just another "white night" drill. They had, reportedly, practiced the proceedure on numerous occasions with no poison in the drink and on the night of the actual massacre the opinion of the masses was that this was just another drill until the chidren and the first to drink started dying around them.

  • I was thinking that many thought it was a drill until they saw babies dying around them. That brings me to the next question, didn't they think that perhaps one day the drill would be real? I mean if so many didn't want to die, why didn't they leave when he started making them practice suicide drills? That would have been a warning sign to me that one day, maybe the drill will be real. It seems Christine Miller knew it was the real thing and was trying to talk him out of it.

  • You're dealing with a charismatic person, a common knowledge that he's whacked out on opiates and amphetimine did not sway his followers trust in him.

Jim Jones followed a very old philosophy:

All that you have to do to keep a man content is give him someone to love,

If you can't do that, give him something to believe in, and if you can't do that, just give him something to fucking DO. Research the day to day and you see how many weren't in a mental or physical position to react accordingly.

  • I don't know why the arrival of Sen. Ryan didn't tip more off to the fact that this was the real deal. Perhaps many didn't believe that he had the physical capabilities to harm them in that manner eg. didn't actually have the cyanide. Some of the higher ups must have known, Ms. Miller comes to mind as she did try to get him to spare the babies, but they also would have been the ones most indoctrinated into his madness to hold positions of trust.

  • We do know that the decision, when it was made, was a quick one. If there had been any element of true planning, JJ would not have allowed his two sons and the basketball team attend the game and survive their "statement".

I don't know if this helps. It doesn't answer the question of why JJ believed Dwyer was there during the last hours or who taped the final recording of the news reports after the deaths but there is a groupthink mentality that makes the events of Jonestown entirely plausable.

  • You have a community of people who had seen horrible things: McCarthy hearings, assassinations of prominent civil rights leaders and political figures, poor young men stolen from whatever their calling may have been to fight a war that you;re bound to lose. Remove these people from that situation for 3 years, then tell them that the previous situation has gone to hell and is now coming for them and it becomes very easy to limit their options and sway their actions..

  • i know that jim jones started to lose it when he became a methodist & preached at methodist churches. but when he started his CA & other temples in the US & then in Jonestown, was he still preaching methodist? Is methodist a cult? Or can a methodist get lost & get in a cult like this?

  • it's not a cult, it's a sect... and methodism is neither, it is a denomination. He seemed to have had a mental disorder or perhaps immoral thoughts as a child, since he stabbed a cat..they say murderers start out with small acts of violence and it usually increases into worse acts. In that case, it was inevitable that he became this sordid and evil.

  • see what religion does to people turns them fucking retarded brainwashed good for these suckers

  • i concur!

  • that is the most disgusting thing i have ever heard or seen jim jones was a fucking maniac that wasnt revilutionary suicide that was murder!!! unbelievable.......

  • MONSTROOOO!

  • This is some sick shit!!!!!!

  • how could people be so fucking stupid?

  • How can people worship Fox News like a church? Or MSNBC? What's the difference?

  • dat jim jones is a satan!

  • Google Q051 for jones' attacks against blacks, the elderly, and God.

  • I heard that after gay sex he liked to have shit and piss on rye and said that was what Jesus ate.

  • people let others control them because they have no direccion in life.and any one who belives in a man who uses God to manipulate deservs death, the only ones i feel sorry about are the children and anyone who try to scape and could't find its way out.GOD is a loving GOD...SATAN IS ALSO A GOD...OF EVIL...and he was the one jim jones was saving this people for...please educate your self, read but dont belive evrything you read, trust but not blidly, you may get poisoned by a love one.osea

  • sorry but I had to laugh at "SATAN IS ALSO A GOD...OF EVIL" bahaha

You have a point, but I don't think anyone deserves to die, for being lost. Maybe they were just looking for direction, and didn't know where exactly to turn. Initially, the cult was seemingly positive. That's how he drew the 'lost' people in. That being said though, many chose to stick with him, after the atrocious things he committed, so that does tell you quite a lot about his followers' sense of morals too.

  • I'm glad you can laugh of that because i love making people happy. And i like your way to say things very nicely, i can sense you are a nice person. Jahova is a loving and caring God who is always there for me,but i also know that Satan is around having fun with our tormented everyday life and using people to turne us against the father. i'm ok with the fact that people have the right to belive or not.because in the end i'm just another inperfect human with no right to judge my brothers. :)

  • I agree with you. After the immoral things he started doing that should had been a warning sign to the followers but many were so brainwashed, firm believers of what he was preaching, and feeling they had nothing outside of People's Temple, that many were willing to die. I have to say from listenining to the tapes, any preacher who would curse and talk about sex in the way Jones did would make me run. The way the members talked freely about sex was shocking. I guess morals wasn't a high standard

  • i think if my wife died in my arms, i would have murdered jim jones before he had a chance to kill himself. that could be what the gunshot was about.

  • there were guards protecting him

  • Religion - be it a church, denomination, or sect will forever be a scourge towards our existence....

  • Einstein once said - the universe and human stupidity are endless.

  • those stories are effing crazy!

  • *crying* I am sooo sorry for all of this, the children! that's what tore me up the most! I don't like it when children are hurt! :(

  • maybe someone can answer my question..how did these people that are alive now survive? if the people around them are being made to die, how did these people survive without drinking the koolaid or being murdered?

  • There was a movie with Powers Boothe some years ago. It showed that a few survived by managing to slip away and/or hide amidst all the chaos & pandemonium...

  • They ran like hell or managed to escape long before

  • Some people were saved by some official who came to the place with a couple of choppers (or planes I don't remember), they took some people who told them the truth about the temple, as many as the aircrafts could take... The next day they came back, with armed forces I beleive but it was too late.

  • it´s really amazing what you can make people do to themeselfs, really amazing, humans believe wha they are told, ive come to this realisation very recently, it´s heartbreaking to realise how easily controlled and manipulated us humans really are.

  • It's called destructive mind control, its done through deception and manipulation of people by subtly controlling their access to critical information, their critical thoughts, controlling their behaviour and manipulating them by instilling intense fear of would would happen to them if they left.

  • Think about that when you watch the media, start analyzing things. How people act and why

    It get's pretty scary

  • Jim Jones would have been your modern day Jigsaw...damn man...damn

  • LOL

    fucking true

  • humans dont need religion they only need to believe in god and try to not make those stupid mistakes. thats my opinion I hope Im not insulting anybody

  • My thing is it was so many people at that time they could have fought back, and left, but this man had them under so much control they feared him.

  • thats being the shit

  • I concur. There definitely was more people to fight back against Jones, the guards, nurses. The members could have overpowered him. If more would have joined in with Christine Miller, maybe all those people wouldn't have died. The members believed so much in that man, in spite of his many wrongs, that they were willing to die. They believed they would be hurt if they lived, not helped. I often wonder how many woke up at the last minute and realized it wasn't right but it was too late

  • But its really hard for me to believe that 900people were really and willing to drink the cyanide. I believe that most of they were forced, and that some had been murdered.

  • Yeah, I believe alot of them were forced to drink that poison too. At the end they wanted out, but he would'nt let them. And It really was very heartbreaking to hear those babies cry at the end, so sad.

  • Its really sad because people put their trust in this man...this shows you that you should not worship a man. Man is full of error.

  • Very true.

  • I know...I just couldnt believe what I had saw, and how so easily influenced they were by the non-sensable words this man was saying. Killing newborns, and such. This man was sick :( You can hear the babies crying in the audio background when he said "Die with dignity, die with respect". I almost wanted to cry.

  • A lot of the blacks was attracted to People's Temple because it offered them equality, freedom, Jones did help a lot of people change their lives, which is how a manipulator traps you. Most of the blacks attracted to People's Temple had a lot of drama in their lives, was beat down, People's Temple cleaned them up and gave them peace. Many dedicated their lives to People's Temple and said People's Temple saved their lives.

  • Jones made them believe they'll never find peace or equality in the world so they went along with his revolutionary suicide. I wish someone rational could have told them the way to freedom is to keep living and fighting. Dying isn't the way to change the world. Jones just felt if I have to suffer, they'll have to. Religion is suppose to be about free will. If you can't come, go, dress as you please, if your separated, your in a cult.

  • I agree, and it's upsetting to watch that video, and i cannot imagine why someone would want to do that to anyone, however it is a sect, not a cult

  • Cult:

a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc.

How can you say this wasn't a cult? Maybe not by their definition, but that's what is was and what it will always be.

  • Comment removed

  • People who live their entire lives according to the propaganda mandates of any person (politician, talk show host, etc..) are cult followers.

The only difference between Jim Jones and Rush Limbaugh or Keith Olbermann is that the followers of the latter two haven't been told to kill themselves.

  • You right. Never trust men but this tragedy proved to me trust no one 100%, be suspicious of everyone, especially when it comes to religion. Look at all these murders today by husbands/parents murdering their children/wives, the wives/children never would think the one person they trusted would kill them. It seems the people we trust, think will never hurt us, always do. People worship Obama, I'm black, but I worship no man, lots of people will be crushed to find he just another lying politician

  • Churches are nothing else but brainwashing stations. An spiritual leader is nothing else but a predator that targets weak minds, and turn them into blind followers. like an army they need foot soldiers, but if you notice their way of life they are nothing but followers that get their ideas of a salvation of their sinful lives from one book only. Salvation from what? from themselves? Organized religion is a poison for mankind.

  • actually some churches are good and preach the Bible,we all need to determine what is true and what is an occult,if we study what the Bible says then listen to what God is telling us to do then I believe God's powerful word is there!!!

  • "actually some churches are good and preach the Bible"

When did the bible become a good book? If you like genocide and sexual abuse, then the bible is GREAT book! Praise the lord!

  • The Bible is good for crushing peanut shells.

  • What are you talking about? Genocide? Sexual abuse? When did Jesus *ever* preach that?

  • THe bible teaches that. If you believe that jesus is "god" then I guess you should believe that jesus used to approve of those things!

  • Man, Protestants can be whacky!

  • and at the end of all this jim jones didnt have the balls to drink the kool aid , instend he ask for one of the guards to shoot him.

  • THe guard probably thought "Damn, I wished I shot him siiner"

  • Too True.

  • I can't believe so many people trusted him!

  • Nenhum tipo de tirania, ditadura ou qualquer espécie de intransigência política ou religiosa serve para a humanidade. Tudo isso leva a loucura, assassinatos e suicídios. Exemplos: Hitler e Jim Jones.

  • this is terrible. what a sick bastard.

  • PBS, what a joke!... Yes its very funny. What kills me is that they get donations, tax breaks, and govornment money. You think they would be fare and balanced...no! Tavis smiley, FrontLine, Sesame st. etc.. all communist, liberal, subjectivist rhetoric.

  • PBS cleans up the communist connection, even when they play the recording of Jones exhorting his followers to commit suicide. The full quotation was "Stop this hysterics. This is not the way for people who are Socialists or Communists to die. No way for us to die. We must die with some dignity." Why would they play only the last sentence?

  • PBS, what a joke? Every news station fails to mention this was a communists breading ground. I wonder why they leave it out? Hmmm?????

  • Hahaha no.

  • Jim Jones is one scary MO-FO... Hell I would've drank the kool-aid just to get him to shut the F-UP!!

  • Jim Jones is a reflection of Hitler, both inspired people who were vulnerable and desperate for hope, exploited their fears by blaming others and gained overwhelming support only for it to crash.

  • jim jones really was the biggest piece of shit scumbag in the history of the united states.

  • nope, dubya is.

  • What a mess Luther left behind.

  • every man became his own God

  • why did they all lay face down. That's sort of weird. And how did those people get away.

  • THis guy was a dumbfuck to the nth degree..it's really unfortunate his congregation didn't rush him and mutilate him to death.

  • He actually wasn't dumb and I say that as someone who thinks he was evil. But he was a master manipulator, a charismatic, the sort of man that people follow. That doesn't mean I like him.

  • Yes...for that day and that populatioin he held charisma and had a message. Such a man couldn't sway people much today with the same claims and logic...but in the late '60's through '70's ...yeah.

  • Do remember that Heaven's Gate was not all that long ago. As long as there are disenfranchised people, people like Jones or Applewhite will have followers.

  • xman4un~ARE YOU SERIOUS?? Dubya and Iraq???

    9/11???

y'all swallowed it like a fat worm. oh, no, it couldn't happen now, we're too smart! don't be an idiot, the media feeds us shit everyday, and we eat it like caviar!! stupid sheeple.....

  • Hahaha yes

  • BrynMawrYamBag -- Actually, there were only 2 found at the compound who were shot - Jim Jones and his nurse, Annie. Several were shot at the congressman's airplane. The others at the compound died by cyanide poisoning.

  • Religion is evil.

  • "Religion is he opiate of the masses."

  • this wasnt really about religion it was more political, the wanted to create a country where they would ALL be accepted. My sons babysitter was a surviving victim, and she explained it all to me.

  • This is an important point. Jones was evil but he also knew how to get people to follow him. He spoke of equality, acceptance, of utopia. People have to understand that those at Jonestown were not forced to go there. They went because they were convinced that something very wonderful was there for them.

  • The majority of his congregation were poor blacks, comprised of numerous seniors, children (300+) and other relatively socially marginalized individuals who felt the found family. Who knows??? Maybe they did! But a man with Jones wouldn't have the where-with-all to have influence today...anybody can see this man is a Charlatan with obvious meglomaniac tendencies.

  • I like the part where a black man beat a white man at the presidency OWNED! SNAP!

  • Until Big Brother or some good old boys decide to keep the white house, well white :) History repeats itslef, John

    Kennedy could tell you that.

  • that guy look just mike rezzy the dad guy prue waste.

  • The shield of "Congressional Protection" vs die hard fanatics with basic hunting weapons....I wouldnt put much faith in that either.

  • Jim Jones was an asshole.

  • i would have killed jim when he has a BABY.

  • Where is part 6??

  • such prolific words. creepy. "if we can't live in peace, then let's die in peace."

  • This is interesting.... What makes 900 people kill themselves?

  • Crowd. Crowd. Crowd. Crowd. human is the wisest animal on the face of this planet, but theres nothing more idiotic than a crowd when theres one person around who has Charisma and agenda. American biblebelt, jonestown, Nazi-germany, bomberislamists (extremists), waco. varying degrees of questionable agendas bastardized from original ideals but all led by someone, all led by a person who has immense charisma and believes to be right.

  • Li´ke a bunch of sheep lead by one man. And when the wolves come, he tells the sheep to kill themselves.

  • What makes 900 peoples kill themselves?? Well many of these victims were found with gunshot wounds and needle marks..I wouldnt say 900 killed themselves..maybe 400..the rest had help. BUT the precursor to this tragedy was BLIND FAITH. Desperate blind faith.

  • dangerous - learn how to spell.

  • Many of these people died because they couldn't fight back. Too bad they didn't have guns and the 2nd amendment to protect them. Imagine if 100 men in that crowd had a pistol to fight back against their government who was Jim Jones... how is that any different then obummer who will try and collect your guns today... after that the government can do to you what they please... Jefferson in infinite wisdom saw this eventuality over 200 years ago

  • I am very religious and would never ever think that someone could do that. This guy was clearly parinoid. He also was'nt a conservative Christian. He was a radical leftist civil rights California druggy Christian.

A conservative Christian cares about life and family. And would never do that to people because it would be against their morals. A leftist radical leftist Christian is like Fred Phelps and Jim Jones. Man I just really feel bad for those kids.

  • It's not about christianity. It's hard to say that a true christian would do this, and a true christian would do that. Its any selfless person. Jim Jones did it all for himself.

  • JIM JONES IS INSANE!!!!!! JIM JONES IS CRAZY!!!!! He don't have to do that.... There is hope.... There is God that will lead them from darkness to light.... Anyway, i don't think he believes in god. He call his people his children. It's not his children, he did not died for them.... It is only god can call us children. It is only god that died for us.... So go to hell Jim Jones!!! Your religion is not supposed to be named as People's Temple but People's calvary or death.
  • "Anyway, i don't think he believes in god."

he DOESN'T believe there is a god retard

if you cared to watch the other videos, you'd have noticed that when they talked about him throwing the bible and no lightening striking him down, he was basically saying there was no god up there.

  • i agree.....its fascinating how one man can convince that many people to do what he wanted them to do...........

  • Unbelievable

  • Horrifying tragedy, yet strangely fascinating.

  • i agree, watching this is unbelievable, and to think that this actually happened, all i can say is WOW!

  • He´s just like my boss! :S

  • I think this documentary is essential viewing to train one's mind against manipulation by Jim Jones's type, of whom there are many.

  • .... i'm speachless. ..

  • Hate this Fucker.

  • first time i saw this on tv i cried when that old man said he wanted to go home for christmas to see his famaily and how defeated that man sounded when he said "no" when asked again if he wanted to go home...Jim Jones is evil and burns in hell

  • What a horrible man.

  • True. Simple and well said.

  • i agree

  • so tragic

  • Jim Jones was a sick freak!

  • Stewster1993 shut up and do some proper research and keep your mouth shut until you do. I have been studying the PT for 2 years and i beleive the members (though certainly not rational) were not crazy or stupid, just idealists. As itzallqud07 said anyone who refused to willingly drink the koolaid was forcibly injected by temple security although only two people died from gunshot wounds (Jones and his secutary).

  • I feel bad for the kids tho, seriously. They shouldn't have suffered like that.

  • That little boy should've been bitch slapped. (sorry, but c'mon, they wanted to get outta there.)

  • i just saw part of a documentary on them. it is terribly sad. maybe if the world weren't so messed up they wouldn't have followed this evil person...so sad. i was a kid when this happened and never really knew what happened.

  • Hmmm, well, some people did want to live and protested against it. They got shot or were forced by 3 people to the ground and were injected the poison. Do your research on what happened people.

  • The following comment stems from ignorance regarding thought reform (i.e. brainwashing) and the power of a charismatic leader. Do your homework first. It could happen to you. "About 300 kids were murdered. but the parents, they committed suicide. they're the ones to blame. i really cant understand why in the world they would listen to that man. No matter how much he claimed to be God you omg you just don't kill yourself when some idiot says to."

  • thank u so much for uploading this!!i was always interested in jonestown n now i got to know soo much more!!!

  • what is wrong with u??i didn't mention anything about following whatever they do..i said i was interested in the whole tragedy thing cos i am a sociology student that is all!gee whiz

  • You would probably like to see some of the actual news reporting following the tragedy that JonestownArchives has posted. You might want to check it out.

  • this whole event brings tears to my eyes. this is what happens when someone gains power, how people saw him as a god, and then gets paranoid. stalin, hitler, pol pot, the only difference is that these people were brain washed into killing themselves. sad just sad, i feel so sad for these people, even while i type this tears come to my eyes.

  • alot of what was going on at the peoples temple was already leaked out before they moved to guyana, like: beatings, abuse, financial fraud, ex members coming forth. And Jim Jones was already far wacked out on drugs. All of this before there move to Guyana. I just wished they would of caught him before they left, then all of these people would of been alive today.

  • And dont forget this was the 1970's we are talking about. Civil protests everywhere, war, political turmoil, government scandals, etc..the country was doing through some changes, totally different era than today. The civil rights movement was ripe and Jim Jones preached equality and marxism to these people. So many people fell for his ideas. Its just sad that all of his evil wrong doings were not fully disclosed in time before his move to guyana. So that the authorities could of moved in on time.

  • Jim Jones had one of the first soup kitchens in San Francisco at that time so, these people had no where to stay. He was taking in so many people from the streets at that time. Sadly, these people were deceived. Notice the ones who left the cult were only the middle class people who knew better but the unfortunate stayed. And yes, these people were 100% murdered. If they fought back, there were plenty of bullets ready to be used. Only a few ran into the jungle and survived, others were shot.

  • Please do your research on this tragedy before posting stupid comments. The majority of the people who died in guyana were the unfortunate and neglected. Most of the children were orphans or foster kids which Jim Jones adopted or gained custody from the city of San Francisco. The city awarded Jim Jones these children for his "suppose godly deeds". And many of the adults were ex-drug addicts and ex-cons from the bay area. So obviously, he had alot of unfortunate people down on their luck.

  • I never understood why there arent more people talking about the fact that the people in authority in The Peoples Temple were mostly whites. Most of the people that died were black. Also it's rarely mentioned that Stanley Clayton's related to Huey Newton (Black Panther founder and leader). Jones tried to convert the Panthers and also get some for security. He preached equality and gave none.

  • Exactly!!

  • There will be more father fuckers like Jim Jones in the future and shooting or stabbing them is the only option.

WASTE AND DETERIORATE IN HELL JIM JONES, YOU MOTHERFUCKING COCKSUCKING PIECE OF SHIT.

  • oh shit lamb of god

  • how could people be so damn stupid and have done that?! did they have no common sense?! as soon as i were told to kill myself for watever reason i would have been like "fuck this shit, i want to live". i wonder how the survivors managed to leave bc i heard that those who didnt commit suicide were shot.

  • The survivors (many of them) survived because they snuck out "hauled ass to the jungle" and looked the other way like they always did. Cause when push came to shove, they weren't about to die like all their "comrades". Most that survived were high ups in the Temple and also, of course..Jones' sons. Amazing ain't it?

  • yeah it is amazing and sad

  • because they were forced to, dumbass!!!!!!

  • they werent forced to stupidass they chose to. they could have fought

  • And how should they fight against guards with machine guns, asswipe!?

  • the same way blacks fought against whites with martin luther king motherfucker! they didnt have machine guns idiot they had guns or rifles that wouldnt have been enough to kill 900 people! idiot

  • Even if you didn't take the Kool Aid, they would of killed you on the spot. The Survivors hid in the jungle. Almost 900 + were killed, not suicide, but killed.

  • well if u consider drinking poison by choice being killed, then i guess. To me it was murder suicide. People always have a choice in life they could have chosen to fight but they were cowards.

  • They were forced. They did not have a choice to drink or not, they were forced. Some were even brought to the ground and given it by a shot if they decided not to drink it. Only two or three survived--by hiding. Every child died. They were FORCED. Crying and all.

  • well according to this video it didnt look like it. Didnt u see the man saying that his wife, with no tears in her eyes, took the poison and told him to place her next to her grandma??

  • I have often wondered what might have happened if more had fought. I have heard that a few did. But,the shear numbers of people, you have to wonder if they couldnt have done something. Many of the parents were often the ones that gave the poison to the children. I consider at least all of the children that died to be murdered. They had no choice. The adults might be a different matter.
