Guys, I am looking for a DSLR and recently got to know about these micro 4/3 or mirror-less or whatever cameras, which will have image quality similar to DSLR. I`m looking for Nikon D5100 or NEX 5N. Can you please suggest me which one is better. I am looking for better image quality in both outdoors and indoors. I`m a casual photographer and would like to take pics hanging out with friends. Having a better video capabilities is an added advantage.Thanks!

@bangcupid007 I have narrowed my options down to exactly the same 2 cameras as you. I am starting to think the NEX may be the best option (as I am used to the compact camera user interface) and because the sensor in the NEX5n is actually one of the the best APS-C sensors ever produced I won't be compromising on image quality. The sensor in the Nikon D5100 is actually made by Sony and is also very good, but the NEX is much better in live view mode which is important to me. Good luck

@KaNGaRooBaby910 5n, IQ is mind blowing, no Noise past 800 ISO and its barely visible at higher up to 6400 even 12800 ISO is usable. Build quality tip-top, you can use most of legacy lenses, and more zeiss, e-mount lenses to come.

Why the heck do you like the 24P video better? This is not a cinema camera. You will force people to see jerky videos. 24P is great for Lord of the Rings, etc, where they tell the actors how to move. Do you plan on telling your subjects how to move? I hate 24P home videos where they feel the need to pan and make your eyes bleed. Don’t pretend to be cool with 24p.

@AYGAMES it's not a DSLR. It's called Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera or MILC. It doesn't have any mirrors, but it has a big sensor and interchangeable lenses :)

@DJMarshMellowXD picture quality is greater, more frames per second, better digital noise control meaning sharper images. and mainly focus speed,blows any camera out of the water. Sony nex series have the fastest focus time as of august of '11.

Beware as removing the orange sticker Sony puts on the touch screen/LCD can remove the LCD screen coating when you remove it. Sony is aware of this but isn't making any public announcements warning consumers to beware, nor are they changing their practice of applying this sticker onto the screen for marketing purposes with the new cameras in the box.

I was all set to buy this most excellent camera and then stopped. The video recording click issue was a show stopper for me. Even though SONY claims a free fix, etc. Folks continue to report that new production models and those that under went the free fix, continue to have the noise click issue. Hard to accept that such just a great camera has this basic audio problem.

@Cooriosity05 depends on what your purpose is. Ask yourself if you REALLY need this over a point and shoot. If you have a lot of spare money, then sure, get it. It's a good, portable camera, albeit being (imo) overpriced.

Something you have missed,

How long can you shoot HD video before "overheating" will kick in and shut off the camera?

Also, did your camera have the clicking issue(s)? (i know Sony is now offering a sort of fix, hope the new batch will not have this issue).

Steve - Is it difficult to get a fine focus in bright light using manual lenses and no EVF? I'm seriously considering buying an Nex-5N but will be using a couple old Minolta manual lenses and am concerned about trying to focus outdoors on a bright sunny day. I don't plan to buy the EVF.

Actually the battery life on my Sony a55 is not that great, rather poor actually.. but I guess it's because the battery is just about 1000 mAh

Thanks Steve…your reviews area among the best on the web. I’m very excited about the 5N but one glaring weakness tells me to wait for the NEX-7. With the 5N you can use the flash, the EVF or the neat little Sony external microphone, but only one at a time. It looks like the NEX-7 will allow you to use all 3 at the same time. I’ll wait patiently for your review of the NEX-7.

This camera is really really good with all it's features. Specially the evf. But I am also waiting to see the Fuji film fine-pix X10. I am not a pro photographer but an enthusiast on photography only. So should I go for this? or wait for the X10.

Wow, the screen is so clear. The design is very nice and clean. The user interface looks fantastic. Good to see the ISO finally shown on screen. This is much better than any of Panasonic or Olympus's micro four thirds camera! Bigger sensor too. Fantastic work Sony.

i have nex 5 and most of my videos are with nex 5 18-55mm lenses,, i want to buy the 16mm , someone can advice me if the16mm nex lens will couse any distortion when i make videos or pictures???

I've heard that external view finder doesn't work with the original Nex 5! I spent more than a few dollars on my Nex 5 and it doesn't seem like I've had it that long. I feel kinda snubbed by Sony for being left out in the cold. I'm thinking of getting the Nex 7 but I'm afraid that a week after they'll release the Nex 8. I guess that's how it goes with electronics though.

The focus peaking is a really good addition to the 5N. What kind of adapter do you use for you Leica lens? Also do you know if the new Sony adapter for their A mount lenses work with auto focus?
