so what happened to cason then, he runs this super time at 24 years old then where did he go. on the iaaf profiles it shows he came back in 98 with a 10.1 or something, then no sign of him
Christie: a champion in every sense of the word. A great athlete and wonderful ambassador for the sport. Humble and self-effacing, gracious in defeat or victory, he was an ideal role model for any aspiring young athete. The drug tests were manufactured to attempt to destroy the great man.
Agreed. Cason's start was usually much better, one of the reasons why he held the WIR for 60m at 6.41 for so many years until broken equalled and then broken by Mo Greene. I think he would've run 9.89~ with his usually good start - I also think that had Cason run that time, Christie would've been pushed to around 9.85
That was the best start Christie ever had. That was always his downfall early in his career but after he started training with Colin Jackson his starts improved massively.
Much agreed in terms of the way he continued it throughout the race. Christie's 60m split here was 6.45, in Tokyo (when he placed 4th in 9.92) he went through 6.43. Also, the wind here was +0.3, and in Tokyo was +1.2. All things considering, this Stuttgart run is actually more impressive than I've previously given it credit for.
@mart3442 he had not retired, it was not voluntary. he was more than 100 times over the limit and this wasn't the first time he had tested positive. the guy is a disgrace.
Great clip, but god, I'd forgotten about David Coleman's voice and how bad it sounded during the last 10+ years of his reign. Typical BBC keeping their dinosaur commentators on way beyond their sell-by date, see John Motson for further details...
David Coleman can't be any worse than Steve Ovett! For the 2005 Worlds the U.S. got the British commentators and I couldn't stand either Peter Matthews or Ovett!

Man, during the heats, Cason was out the blocks like a panther. But then he picked a bad time to have a bad start--the final!

That was in Atlanta in 1996. Linford was actually dubbed "The Panther" for a time.
