  • I don't get No.2 and No.5.

    What does those mean?

In the list, American English and British English seems to be so different.

Do American people understand collectly what British people are saying?

In my English practice, I listen to both of them.

Actually, sometime I don't understand what British people saying.

but I think it is that I am Japanese.

Please someone tell me about above questions.

  • @Cocaineffect American people are convinced that their version of English is the only kind and they have trouble understanding people with different accents. It's not because you're Japanese, actually lots of people who don't put in enough effort have trouble understanding British English. IF you watch more Ricky Gervais videos, you'll begin to understand it in no time!

  • @Cocaineffect

    IMO

So long as ppl speak slowly and skip the slang, anyone who speaks any dialect of English should be able to communicate with other English dialects. Some ppl however seem to on purpose speak real fast and full of slag and of course get mad if you don't understand, as if you are wasting their time. It's almost like a snobby little game they play.

  • I love that smoke a fag punchline. :)

  • No.1 Should have been, "Isn't Ricky Gervais funny?"

  • Fanny and Spunk have entirely different meanings in britain too. Avoid those words in polite company

  • hahahaaa lettermans face when he says "fag"..... hahahaaa IT MEANS CIGERETTE!

  • "Do you know the queen?" LOL

  • Americans love smoking fags, but british people don't like shooting homosexuals anymore.

  • @ArchhereticK dont be a comedian that just offensive not funny

  • I've had Americans ask me what I'm doing for the 4th of July and Thanksgiving as if British people celebrate that shit -.-

Ask Americans, "what are you doing for the 5th of November?"

  • @moshpotpaul Well I can imagine why Britain wouldn't celebrate the 4th of July :)

  • @s5b678 Haha it's like celebrating independence for India or something, yeah we lost a war but regardless of that fact, it wasn't "our" independence... So why would we celebrate it any way? :P

  • omg what do you mean lets go and smoke a fag?

  • @MultiMasterjake haha, it's what they call a cigarette

  • @clairereitz i know that i was being sarcastic

  • @MultiMasterjake in england, a 'fag' is a slang term for a cigarette.

  • @sexypotterhead i know that it was a sarcastic coment

  • @MultiMasterjake oh.. it went straight over my head, lol

  • Ricky Gervais is too funny!

  • Stupid things Brits say to Americans: "Could you take your guns out of the house while I'm in it?" "Wheres your cowboy hat?" "Do you have any smaller serving sizes?" "Do you eat anything that isn't coated in trans fat? "Your driving on the wrong side of the road" "Wheres the loo?" "Will you PLEASE take Madonna back?" "There's a lot of Mexicans here." "(1st day in america) Does it EVER rain here?" "Why arent all your baseball teems called the Yankees?"
  • @Dzubur93 Considering how much American entertainment we're subjected to in Britain, I'm fairly sure none of us would wonder about any of these things. Except the one about trans fat - that's a fair question.

  • @LeKayFace it tastes good, thats y

  • @Dzubur93 Good to know.

  • I was hoping for "Do you have a 4th of July in England?"

  • "Do you know what England should do its own version of the office?"

I don't get it. Please tell me what it means.

  • @Cocaineffect Ricky Gervais invented the office

  • @tompenno

    Thank you. I got it.

  • @Cocaineffect ricky gervaise invented the office before us americans did

  • @Cocaineffect Ricky Gervais invented the Office and it was a tv show in England before America!

  • @Cocaineffect because most Americans assume The Office is an American t.v. show and are always telling him that, but it actually started in England and then they adapted it over here to the American audience.

  • @Cocaineffect and its far superior to the american one btw :)

  • I was just waiting for "Happy 4th of July!"

  • Well, they clearly couldn't think of 10, so half of them are just variations on a previous entry XD

  • @MrVinushka Your so dumb it was intentionally done so like that

  • @MrVinushka he was doing them to emphasise a joke

  • @eminem197795 lol apart from Eminem presumably?

  • smoke a fag!!!! thats always a good one to offend americans with loool

  • #10 was the best.

  • 118 like to smoke fags

  • Most hilarious thing an American said to me is that circumcision is cleaner lol American iz craaazy

  • @qwertymonify

Well, circumcision is cleaner. Don't get me wrong, I would never get one, but it is in fact cleaner.

  • Number 0...

"we saved/kicked your ass in WW2"

  • whoa, that's like the best intro graphic for the top 10.

something this american says, ricky gervais fucking rocks.

  • Ricky always looks like a stagehand who's getting above his station.

  • Shouldn't he have done those in an American acccent? lol

  • Number one is so good lol

  • Lmfao he's so funny! "what do you mean let's go and smoke a fag?" lmao classic

  • "Your English is very good, but what's your mother tongue?"

  • he's missed afew!! "what langauge do you speak in england?" and the MOST question i get is " how do you feel you lost the war of independance?" I wasnt around over 200 years ago.but i always say, we had to let you win something :)

but seriously the only war britain remembers are the most recent. WWII and falklands. sorry to burst american bubble on this one but britain doesnt mind that you got your independance dont mean it in a harsh way but britain had SO many wars that it was just another 1

  • Comment removed

  • @LordLolinghamThe3rd Sorry I'm not, but wish you all the best finding your special bum chum!!

  • As usual, no idea of Brit humour, the best in the world.

  • i love being american haha.

  • @livexthexlife192 me too especially around people from the uk. we can say whatever the fuck we want and get away with it . they will laugh along and think he's just another dumb american.lol now i know why black people have so much fun !!hahaha

  • GOT IT XD

  • love it when he says.....got it

  • Comment removed

  • @JanineRobin YANKS ARE ALWAYS LATE FOR PARTIES

  • @markstar777

at least they get off the SETEE and go

  • @sparrowdudu i meant world wars. settees

  • How ironic that the other guy in the video says to Letterman 'it's the difference between the two languages' when Letterman asks about the fag thing...erm, we speak the same language...Oh dear!

  • @Rachiejane1 Then again...that 'other guy' is Artie Fufkin from 'This is Spinal Tap'.

  • How Many times did he have to say "Say it in English, Not British"

    He did for #8, #4, and #2

  • This was below Gervais. I'm embarrassed...

  • Number 3 was hilarious.

  • i think number 1 should be "It¨s soccer not football"

  • he could have said way funnier things! no. 1 was the only ricky gervais level of laughter!

  • 8 and 4 are the same thing!

  • @Nemesis000000 Well done nemesis! You have a demonstrated a firm grasp on the concept of humor.

  • @DeadCTR I wrote that before I saw the third instance. With only two it just seemed like an accidental repetition since it was reworded.

  • i LOVE his facial expressions throughout the list!

  • @DowaShmiffy Hmm well I can see that but to an average American person who hasn't been to the UK, they might not know if 4th of July is a big thing over here or not. Sometimes you do get celebrations in other countries depending on how close they are. Anyway I guess my gripe is with his smart Alec response.

  • @LyricalWax It's a light-hearted joke! not a smart alec response

  • @LyricalWax We know more about stuff in other countries & their cultures in the UK so of course we know about 4th July.

  • Comment removed

  • @Rachiejane1 we know about it, but the person was asking "Do they have it?", as in the holiday/celebrations, which we don't (by the way, I'm from the UK too).

  • @LyricalWax I know. I think you missed the point though. Obviously the guy knew she meant the celebrations but the woman phrased it in such a way that it just sounded like the date which is where the joke is...pun, play on words, sarcasm etc...

  • @Rachiejane1 Late reply, but..

I get that it's a play on words, as he was clearly talking about the date and not the celebrations, but it's not sarcasm, they're not the same thing. Neither is it an effective response to a supposed "stupid thing American people say to British people", which is the purpose of the thread here. In that regards, an actual sarcastic response ought to have been the opposite (i.e. "of course we have a July 4th") to highlight how stupid her comment apparently was.

  • @LyricalWax You're looking into it a bit too much! x

  • iPod = £120

The Ricky Gervais Show Podcast = £1.29

People looking confused as you walk down the highstreet laughing to yourself whilst listening to Karl Pilkingtons drivel = Priceless !!

  • If its all about arse, why don't gays like a little bit of tit? - Karl Pilkington

  • "Does the brain control you or are you controlling the brain? I don't know if I'm in charge of mine." Karl Pilkington

  • ricky looked constipated during that skit.

    just saying.

  • "you know what, england should do its own version of the office"

  • @RachieFayeTFE the UK version of the Office is the Original one and Ricky was the manager in it

  • @barf245 haha I know, I was just quoting gervais. I own the uk box set....

  • @RachieFayeTFE Me 2 i got the office complete series that has the special aswell

  • @RachieFayeTFE Oh u were joking. Sorry, i dont expect much from yanks- but you raised yrself above the average

  • @RachieFayeTFE OMG I am a spastic, I just listened to the whole lot of the skit. Ummm, can I say I am German at this stage- even if I can't back that up with the truth. Sory for underestimating you.

  • @David44763 hahaha it's alright. as long as you got what I meant initially :) and of course I like subtlety, why else would I watch british shows?

  • @RachieFayeTFE I don't expect subtley from americans, so really, you are joking right?

  • 'i'll read the number then you read the entry, ok ricky?'

    'got it'

    Genius.

  • that was horse shit

four out of ten were just repeats of the others

  • I am American (but I have British in me) and I never judged a british person because of their teeth, in fact I think British people are fantastic! =] Ricky Gervais is a comedy genius

  • Guys! That was comedy. Doesn't mean you lot can go round generalising whole nations. There are lovely people all over the world :)

  • Question Number 4 is missing the question mark.

  • Hey, at least here in the UK we're safe from active volcanoes.

  • God I hate American's! And yes American's are dumb and fat!

  • @XxXMyTeenageLifeXxX ......at least we have healthy teeth and gums......asshole

  • OMG I laugh at you for taking that seriously, and then you go nd insult us for real! Lol woah get a life

  • @XxXMyTeenageLifeXxX // get a toothbrush

  • best one so far

  • He missed one. I actually worked with a Brit for a while and when he came into the office, one of the ladies asked him "do you guys have a 4th of July over there?".

He said, "nope we go straight from the 3rd to the 5th."

  • @riegnman she meant the holiday not the actual date so while the question is slightly dumb, the answer is dumber, even as a joke it doesn't work.

  • @LyricalWax sorry mate.... how thick are you? everybody knew she meant the fucking holiday and it was a funny sarcastic response from the brit. The joke does work and I really hope you were joking aswell. You have just shown the huge difference there is between american and british humour. Think before you nitpick next time.

  • @Sunderland4life if he was being sarcastic then he's trying to say we do have a July 4th over here.. last time I checked, there weren't any. the joke only works if she meant the date and not the holiday, which she clearly didn't. By the way, I'm a Brit.

  • @LyricalWax last time you checked we didn't have a 4th july? you need to get a new calender.

  • @minimacca999 err, check the thread and you'll see I was talking about the holiday. Apart from a few American establishments and companies running a few promotions here and there, we don't have a July 4th celebration.

  • @LyricalWax *facepalm*

  • @minimacca999 how insightful. great comeback there.

  • @LyricalWax OMG how thick are you, the joke plays on the fact that he knows he is being asked the question in regards to the july 4th holiday not the date... stick with the knock knock jokes this is clearly to sophisticated for you mate...

  • @BuFuMAV4ICK so the joke plays on the fact that he knows he is being asked about the holiday, but he decides to give a completely moronic obvious sarcastic answer about the date. yeah like she didn't know that already. wow, what 'sophisticated' humour.. and not at all annoying..

  • @LyricalWax wow, what an unbelievably stupid thing to say. I don't even understand where you're coming from?? thousands of jokes are twists on dual meanings???

How would you make it into a joke then? seriously i want a respons- wait a minute... are you Karl Pilkington?

  • @Munchauzens I can't believe I have to explain it for you.. Sarcasm only truly works when it is highlighting the stupidity of the question being asked, e.g. "Is it true Michael Jackson is dead?" "No he's alive, and actually sitting in my house right now."

Now the woman asked about the holiday, and if the question is so stupid then a sarcastic response would be "yes, there IS a holiday in the UK and the Queen sings Star Spangled Banner while the PM waves the flag and everyone eats hot dogs."

  • @LyricalWax Why are you getting yourself so worked up over it? He was pretending he didn't know what she meant and gave a short and snappy answer. Far better than what your response would have been by giving out a bunch of stereotypes.

Why would you ask a British person "do you have a 4th of July" anyway?

  • @RizoSaysAha I'm not exactly getting myself worked up, I just think his intention was to highlight her stupidity therefore an actual sarcastic response would have been 'yes, we Brits LOVE to celebrate American Independence', hence making her realise that it was a fairly stupid question. (I was exaggerating in the other example).

The 'we go from 3rd to 5th' doesn't answer her question nor does it show her it was a stupid thing to ask as his answer is correct.

  • Comment removed

  • @LyricalWax You are SO easily offended it's untrue...

  • @RizoSaysAha he didn't necessarily pretend that he didn't understand what she meant, he was just making a light-hearted joke. trust me, i'm english and my dad has a similar sense of humour, he only wants to have a laugh that's all.

  • @Munchauzens Instead he made a joke about the date which, while funny, she obviously knew and wasn't asking about, and hence out of place. If you look at the beginning of that initial comment, he writes "he missed one", i.e. he missed another stupid thing American people say to British people. So tell me, how was that a stupid question and in what way is his answer an effective humorous response highlighting her stupidity?

  • @riegnman that's hilarious!

  • @riegnman jajajajajajajajaj

  • @riegnman LOOOOOL Classic man

  • @riegnman Im sure she meant something along the lines of an independence day/national day, but the response was pretty good.

  • As a Brit, I simply MUST object!

My teeth are perfect and I'm 55 years old.......:(

p.s. My original teeth WERE wonky though.......:)

  • Poor Ricky! You can see from Ricky he just thinks these are absolutely shit. Nothing to do with stereotyping a nation (these comments from all of you about britain this america that- there are stupid people everwhere) but what a crappy show!! Why would we even step foot on their set.

    Bloody embarassing...

  • @Annacheka Wait a sec... just watched it again. Did he say Ricky wrote this?

If so this mans gone downhill.

  • top things stupid americans say to brits and vice versa?theyre all here on the comment page.for the record im american but who cares?

  • jhheeeze! i swear everything has to result in to a argument haaa! just watch ittt.

  • @andrewm153351 Yes a lot of major Hollywood films are filmed in the UK and yes a lot of those are financed American companies and....errrrmmm "written" by Americans. I put the word "written" in quotes because a lot of American writers have taken a lot of influence from British productions. One film that springs to mind is "The Truman show" because its concept was directly taken from a 1960s British TV show called "The Prisoner". This is especially true when it comes to comedy.

  • That is so true! A huge amount of american comedy is influenced by british comedy. Although americans like to sugar coat it a bit. We don't mind a bit of crude humour.

But unfortunately, our dreadful reality tv has also spread around the globe, as have our quiz shows. Almost all quiz and reality formats are from British tv. Not our finest achievement.

  • @hippomonster3

"Almost all quiz and reality formats are from British tv."

wooooow....the very first reality television show was called "Candid Camera"...guess where it was? USA.

The first *commercial licensed game show* was "truth or consequences" from the USA.

And none of this matters because this is all past. If your trying to say britain has had more of an influence on television, movies, and entertainment than the USA then you have to be out of your damn mind.

  • no. 3: epic

  • GOT IT

  • @casinohustler i was wondering why you only wrote GOT IT. he's seriously perfecto. hah

  • AAAAHHHHHHHH!!!! 1138.

  • "what do you mean let's go smoke a fag?!"

    I died laughing.

  • its just stereotype and comedy..why are people here getting so offended and feeling the need to say something back to us lol

  • Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

  • well its true at least

  • @viktorhat Wonder how it feels to get ur ass whooped by a dumb and fat person in a war?

  • @ YeaWhiplash: ha! you're a fucking idiot. Sure, just invent a war to try and prove a point. No country in the world has won more wars than Britain! That may be because we start most of them but thats beside the point..

  • Do you know what, england should do its own version of the office XD

  • @LucyLein93sKaTeRgIrL

they based the american show on a the brittish show "the office" they were first

  • hes quoting the video

  • they did. Its called, "The Office"

  • hum no lol

I've heard people making fun of British folks' teeth before, I was simply wondering why was that !!?

It's no big deal. I didn't mean to insult anyone.

Like people make fun of Canadians for being too nice and naive.. if you'd ask me why was that, I'd answer you!

  • Brilliant! But 1:06 cracks me up

  • I dont think we have better or worse teeth than anywhere else. Well my teeth are fine and i keep every appointment with my dentist. Its just an American piss take out of us. We just hit back the Mcdonalds one. Just a bit of a laugh really. Peace!

  • @LawfordLad // .....you're teeth really are funny looking. nothing personal of course, it's just a fact... but hey, don't feel bad, after all your country did give us Pink Floyd.

  • @i8urGspot I dont feel bad about my teeth thanks very much! Do you feel sad because your overweight and the rest of the world despises you?

Im tryng to think of something you lot gave us..................................?????????

  • @LawfordLad // i'll tell you what we gave you. an epic ass-kicking that apparently still haunts your small mind. a little conflict known as the revolutionary war you repulsive, gender bending hood rat. after we kicked your sorry ass, it took less than 100 years for us to become the richest nation on the fucking planet... oh,something else we gave that i can GUARANTEE you have never heard of, fluoride toothpaste

  • @i8urGspot Whoah! Somebody has anger issues! Go see your shrink, that what you lot do, dont you? And typically an arrogant yank rolls out the old ' we kicked your ass' or 'we saved your ass' blah blah blah! You needed the French to help you out with the Revoloutionary war! You turned up at half time in the 2nd world war! You have never won a war on your own!!! And that one really sums it up! Empire's rise and Empire's fall, guess which one is falling now?

  • @LawfordLad// i don't feel angry.....8/6/45..

  • @i8urGspot Good! Just relax and it will all be ok!

  • @LawfordLad// you know what. you're right. thanks for being a good sport. by the way, do you know the Queen ??

  • @LawfordLad Brilliant... LMFAO

  • @i8urGspot

Then less than 50 years to blow it all on illegal wars then end up with the largest trade deficit in the world! Your China's bitch now yank. You don't even know how your country amassed that wealth. They did it by turning the big majority of the population into dumb, passive, consumers. Why else did 300 million people by a 'WMD' story? Jokers.

  • @dynamitefan8//....when half of your favorite videos are of buff men wearing spandex prancing around grabbing one another, don't start talking shit... 2 days late

  • @i8urGspot

2 days late? Was there a deadline to reply? And why is that a reason not to 'talk shit' if thats what you think I did? Ok maybe I should of said "China's bitch until you pay off, what, like 12 trillion?

  • @dynamitefan8///.don't you have some buff sweaty old men to gawk at ? scram.

  • @i8urGspot

Do you know what an ad hominem fallacy is? Look that up. Your clearly one of the dumb, passive consumers I made reference to. Can't actually finish the arguement you started so you try and please yourself by making fun of something someone else likes. SCRAM you thick fuck.

  • @dynamitefan8 do you know what a toothbrush is? Look that up.

  • @i8urGspot Every single video with an English person in it has an England v America debate. It's sad. You are so unoriginal it's untrue. The teeth thing? Ridiculous. Letterman's teeth - aren't perfect for a start. I whiten my teeth & had a free invisible brace on the NHS which you don't have. Shall we go there with the American stereotypes...? OK. You're American. You and everyone in your country must be all be stupid & obese. Yep, pathetic isn't it. Quite like yourself.

  • yaaaaay :)

  • @i8urGspot how do you know what his teeth look like?

  • We dont! Are all Americans dumb and fat?

  • Most are !

haha no, I'm not American so I've got nothing to say..

No I know that not all Brits have bad teeth!! Jeez I'm not that ignorant.

I was simply wondering why people said that often .. Ok let me rephrase.

Why would brits have bad teeth ?! (more than other people)

  • @LawfordLad I don't know. Are so all brits jhave shitty teeth and couldn't find their ass with both hands and a flashlight? sorry "torch"

  • @coopdom Whoosh! You know what that was, that was the sound of my previous sarcastic comment going straight over your dumb head! I forgot , yanks dont get British humour.
