I once heard on american public radio a program with the gypsy band Taraful Haiducilor and sure enough some redneck romanian called in right away to give everyone a lesson how the music they played is not gypsy music but romanian. Another called in & said there is no such thing as gyspsy culture, it's all Romanian. I am sure most Romanians are decent ppl but some of you need to relax and open your mind cause you are an embarrassment to your country. I know there r Italian & US rednecks too.

Without gypsies there is no european music and that includes folk and classical music. All major string instruments including the violin and the piano came from asia in the 12-13th centuries when gypsies first appeared in europe. The violin is a form of the arab rebab brought into Italy by gypsies and the piano's ancestor the harpsicord came from the gypsy cimbalom which is a version of the persian santur. All of today's european folk music is originated in renaissance couple's dances.

those renaissance dances were initially spread by gypsy dancers and musicians all over europe because they were the professional entertainers. that's why there are similarities between hungarian romanian and andalusian music, same pentaton scale in flamenco and some transylvanian dances. It's called the "hungarian minor scale" but it should be called the "gypsy minor scale".

You are quite right about the "hungarian minor scale" because it's a harmonic scale that's used from Romania to Spain and it's derived from the arabic scale but it's not a pentatonic scale. Most popular music today that's called authentic folk music goes back to the traditions of every nation but the gypsy migration is a watershed event in eropean music history and you are right that many of the fundamental elements of eu music comes from India through Persia and the muslim world via gypsies.

It is such a tragedy that most people in europe, especially eastern europe do not give due credit to gypsy culture and their real contributions to national cultures because they don't understand the connections between the oral traditions of Indian Classical Music and european music. when Ravi Shankar conquered the west in the 60s you could see rock musicians from the Beatles to Hendrix in the first rows completely transcended by the scales and harmonies. That's because rock is gypsy music.

I am from Serbia and I know that our Gypsies were never given a fair chance. Gypsy children should have protection from the government health care and education. It is shameful to just complain about them and not do nothing to help. They have cultural identity and incredibly rich folklore. If they are treated as a second rate citizens and misfits that is OUR fault!

Touching as it may be,the translation is only half or less related to what the woman is singing.I think the accuracy of the lyrics may have been sacrificed for the sake of preserving the effect of the melody in itself.

I live in Romania. I am Romanian. Trust me, we're facing the same troubles with rromani like you are/have faced. The thing is that the rromani you are reffering to have absolutely NO connection with the ones depicted in the movie. Your rromani -and trust me on this- have no culture, no moral values. I see them every day. We can't deny they exist, but instead we could stop generalising out of respect for the few remaining true rromani. Of course, the true rromani are tragically outnumbered.

There are similiar words in my dialect of Romanese & i cannot reconise the word beneath as being the word spoken.
I'm certain the subtitles bear little resemblance to that part of the song - as the a spoken wordis later repeated, and yet the ssubtitled words are different to each other -this must be an editorial error!
I have Gadjo dilo & it still perpetuates many myths! Ava, it may some of the HEART,but it has too much sexual content - THAT IS NOT THE ROMANI WAY!!
