I loved the opera, and it has some pretty unusual features. The romentic hero is a baritone, the father is a tenor, the stunning duet for the soprano and mezzo, and of course the tenor mad-scene.
The singing in Wexford was stupendous. Shame I can't say the same about the production. Weird stage pictures, incoherent action, tiresome direction, chorus members with oddball hair-styles. But it was worth seeing for the singing.
Great job as allways. But where the hell does this performance come from? Never heard about. Coloraturafan, you have so many tresearies! The two ladies duetto is amazing, as the Assiedo and Ugo di Parigi (and Bolena off course) are. Thank you again
This is an unfairly neglected opera, there is some very nice music in it, and some very good characterization by Donizetti. The tenor mad scene is an interesting twist, but it is not a mad scene on the scale of other mad scenes like Lucia and Bolena.
I guess you are right about the mad scene. Still interesting, though. Donizetti seems to have been a master in depicting insane characters. Ironic he died insane himself. I bought the Opera Rara's Maria Padilla a few years ago, but I thought the singing could be improved upon.
What's the name of the mad scene for Don Ruiz? Btw, the duet is great!

I have always been interested in this rare opera that contains a mad scene for the tenor. The opportunity to see a video is most welcome.
