@tahorselover Yes, that works too. This time She was instead showing him it was fine to carry her over. In scary bridge 3 and 4 he does it, both directions.
@evamber01 Thank you-- this is definitely giving the horse time to make decisions for himself, which gives him confidence in himself AND in his rider.
nice job having the confidence to stay on. i got off my horse during a similar situation and he proceeded to jump over the bridge and land on top of me. painful and dislocated my shoulder! props to you :)
thank you so much for making a sensible comment! And yes, the lady riding has had tons of experience in schooling & training, and has always been empathetic with horses.
At 3, horses are at a delicate stage of development, their bones are changing, and they are still growing. Especially since he is half-arab: Arabs mature more slowly than most horses, in mind and body.
Lead the horse over the bridge!! No wonder he hates them! You are tugging at him and prodding him; get off, soothe him, and then walk with your hand on his shoulder and talk to him. Better yet, get another horse to go first, to show him its not scary.
I hope you'll watch the rest of the series... we DID get the other horse to go first, the first time. Then at the end we went back and this horse was ridden across first, then back over twice more. He learned the lesson being taught, and he had been over many bridges before this one. He was not treated roughly or forced forward, just kept from turning away from the bridge. He was only scolded for trying to back or turn away.
How is riding a 3 year old horse ( with the added benefit of with a slightly larger rider on!! )good horse training? A horse at this age is not fully matured, you risk long term problems... but thats your own choice I guess
We and our trainer (whom we've been involved with 18 years) feel age 3 is not too young for light trail riding and easy carriage driving. He is half-draft (percheron) and quite sturdy, but the point is it is not "work" like ring-riding or race training is work. It benefits his mind and his agility.
She shud have gotten of and show him it was fine

i would suggest that you start him over a skid so he gets used to going over a raised surface!!!!!

@sarahe02 Yes, trail class and obstacle work would be good for him... instead, he has most often gotten on-the-job training!

It is said that it is safer to ride a broke horse over a green bridge rather than a green horse over a broke bridge!
