Many, many thanks for posting this. That intro has haunted me for years and in my adulthood I'm finally able to reach closure. Whoever came up with the idea to put that music to those images should be working in horror movies and not children's educational segments.
@mrplop2 ... and it probably wouldn't be allowed today because someone will say it might damage the poor little dears' mental health and they'd be traumatised.
My guess is that the BBC Radiophonicss departtment employed a man who was driven half insane by neighbourhood kids kicking balls over his fence, tormenting his pet cat and putting stink bombs in the letter box. In time, he developed a pathological hatred of all kids. So he devised this creepy theme tune as a form of revenge,,,,
Auntie Beeb teased you with that cheery tune over the clock before inducing nightmares with this classic sequence. thank god it was only a few seconds but still VERY SCARY for a 9 year old!!!
It WAS damaging, back in the day aged 9, seen on a 70s TV with set top aerial and distorting sound which clipped much like this low-res digital version, sat on a hard wooden block floor, watched by an evil old female teacher who picks on you... The under-30s today don't know they are born!

The very end of, 'baby elephant walk', if I'm not much mistaken. These titles for, 'near and far', used to scare me, too... Ah.. 'grasslands..!!'
