i am still too young to actually donate, but what i always enjoy doing is getting a shoebox and filling it with toothbrushes, plasters, stationary, tissues and other usefull items. the school sends these to poor places.
that's very nice of you, am glad that there still kind people left in this world ! love all your vid keep doing this and good things will come to your life ! wow! you should make a group !
thank you so much for helping all the people and kids there! im from around that area but i live in the USA. sadly im still to young to help so much, thank you for veryhting your doing to help everyone =)
LostSimply's attitude is the world's majority attitude. No one helped China raise the great mass of skyscrapers in Shanghai other than China itself. The Bengali's need to follow the east asian model otherwise they will forever remain a poor, weak , ignorant and insignificant people.
It sounds harsh but it is the truth, without some sort of economic or military clout they will be ignored and their problems only grow, perhaps even extinction of the country due to global warming.
@ImaginedWriter Here's the deal ImaginedWriter: Next time you leave a comment and feel you have a valid (albeit harsh) point to make - do so without calling the poor "weak", "ignorant", and "insignificant". Try that - and you won't be blocked. Cheers.
@UnculturedProject Hey the truth hurts. All the words I used are true. No one really cares about Bangladesh, Bangladesh has no real ability to project power across the planet and barely manages it within its own borders, a huge swathe of its population is uneducated as well as highly religious.
If you don't know the problems then you can't deal with the problems.
@ImaginedWriter "Truth"? You say "no one really cares about Bangladesh" yet I'm getting support from over 10,000 subscribers (of which I noticed you are now one) and donations to help people on the ground from over 22 different countries. You say they are "uneducated", yet the poor I've met are some of the brightest & most industrious people in the world.
I don't mind if the truth hurts. But, please spare me your claim that you speak the truth.
@UnculturedProject Fred has over a million subs, and I did not include myself in the majority.
They're not that bright, the statistics from the world bank and IMF show this clearly. If the population was as industrious and intelligent as you say they are then they wouldn't be third world. BD is among the most corrupt nations in the world, its industrial base and quality of education have actually gone down over time. I stick to empirical evidence not personal experience which is too small
(cont)The biggest problem BD has is that its best and brightest leave, rarely to return. Most of the Bengali elite have their kids educated abroad and abroad is where they stay (sent an article about this). The brain drain is crippling and add the effect of a huge growing population that is ill managed by poor governance then you have no possibility for growth. Personally I think that BD is not a good place for democracy at this point in time, but requires intelligent dictatorship to force change
@ImaginedWriter A good example of intelligent dictatorship would be the asian tigers like Singapore and South Korea who have made massive forced changes to society to become first world nations and once education and GDP per capita have reached appropriate levels have moved towards or completed full democratisation. The majority of Bengalis are too corrupt, short term gain driven and uneducated to run a properly functioning democracy at this point in time.
@ImaginedWriter As I said on my channel comments, you are welcome to stick around as long as you keep a courteous tone. You want to advocate for aborting tons of poor people's kids? Fine. I don't agree with you - but feel free to say it. But, if you want to go on a long diatribe - these comments aren't the place. So please keep your condescending rants to a reasonable minimum.
@UnculturedProject family planning as well as abortion in extreme cases but yes poor people should have less kids. If you can't afford the kids then don't have them. These children will grow up in misery and the majority will die young anyway, preventing the suffering and saving the money to be spent on something productive for the long term is more important.
@ImaginedWriter Unless you're looking to take over Bangladesh and install this dictatorship of your dreams - I humbly ask you take your ideas elsewhere. You've made your points and I couldn't disagree with them more. There doesn't seem to be much left to say. You seem like a logical guy. Your cost vs benefit of ranting here is diminishing with every post you make. And, if you keep it up, I'll have to block you for spamming the same rant over and over again.
@ImaginedWriter Hi - you're also speaking to a sociologist. So let me say that the stats you're citing can only speak to level of education attained. Which, sure, totally agree that most poor don't have formalized education. But it's completely different to say they are ignorant and "not that bright". Couldn't disagree with you more. And the first hand evidence I have proves that wrong everyday.
@UnculturedProject The average IQ of the South Asian region is around 85, this could be down to a myriad of factors such as malnutriotion, religious indoctrination, disease and general cultural practises that are anti-intellectual but the statement not that bright holds true.
The evidence you have is limited personal experience colored by subjective bias. You being Bengali and passionate about helping these people affects your assessment of them
@ImaginedWriter I speak both as someone who is passionate but also as an academic who has spent years studying the stats. You're wrong. You're stats are wrong. You're conclusions are wrong. The numbers you are citing are wrong. Period.
But if you want to get points as a racist? You're doing fine. Again, please keep your rants of this tone to a minimum. I'm all for free speech - but I'm anti-ignorant hate spam.
@UnculturedProject It is not racist, the east asians seem to have a higher average IQ than europeans while south asians have a lower IQ then the aforementioned groups. This comes from the work of Richard Lynn Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, and Dr. Tatu Vanhanen, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Tampere, Tampere, Finland in their book IQ and the wealth of nations.
@ImaginedWriter The idea that there is a genetic component to intelligence that can be applied to large swats of people based on continental region ("South Asian" vs "East Asian") or skin tone ("black" vs "white") has been disproved. Granted, there are variations in standardized testing but these test sometimes skew based on cultural understanding of the questions being asked.
@ImaginedWriter Clearly, you have a lot to say and these video page comments and channel is not the platform for you to push your pro-abortion, anti-religion (of any denomination), calling poor "ignorant" and "low IQ" agenda. I am sad to say I must cut this conversation short by blocking you.
Great!! good to see a young person like you feeling for the unfortunates instead of XBox360 or ITouch. I am sure in this world many like you have the same kind of energy and aspiration do do something for the poor. My hats off for you and please keep up the good work.
Yes! Dude, thank you for helping all these folks in Bangladesh. You really do have a good heart. You are doing what so many people are too scared or ignorant to do. (and sadly, I am included in that last statement) Keep it up. God bless you!
Props to you for understanding something the people below can not. Travel, help, and see the difference, and then you may believe that even the littlest help can change the life of another person. I've done much poverty relief work in Mexico, and it's been successful in eliminating a number of families from starving to death in the slums. It's not pointless, that's just your excuse for not helping, and deep down you know that.
Hey LostSimply! How dare you tell Shawn he is wasting his time?! He has the right and the ability to help these people. I for one think there needs to be more people like him in the world then maybe Bangladesh and other places suffering in similar ways might not have to suffer! Yes, one man might not be able to fix all the problems of that nation but his efforts have not been wasted. If he changed one life it was all worth it. Have some compassion for your fellow man!!! GEEZ!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
He is wasting his time in his deluded belief that poverty can be ended, he has the right to do it. I'm not saying he shouldn't. I'm just saying its pointless. I wonder how many people he would have helped will have died from a flood, malnutrition or some sort of disease in the next 5yrs. It's a pointless exercise.
I'm really sorry you feel this way. It doesn't matter if the people he helps dies in five years from a flood he help better they lives for the moment. Plus any of us could be killed by a flood or natural or nuclear disaster at any moment. Just because you live in an industrialized nation doesn't guaranty your safety. All life is worth the same no matter how much money you have or where you live in the world!!
How can you say it's pointless when he even got the attention of such a cynical person as yourself??? By tyour own argument we should stop sending our own kids to school because they might catch the mexican flew next week... it would be pointless to waste time on their education. We are all going to dei someday, but the point is to make the most of the time we've got, or in this case: to help others make the most of their life and times.
Dude come back to Canada. Bangladesh is a worthless shit hole that can't be helped. For one thing anything you build will be washed away in floods, the country is overly religious and therefore retarded with massive illiteracy. It has massive corruption and family elite politics. In a hundred years it will fall beneath the ways. Leave it and get a job back in Canada. You're wasting your time.
I agree with you that Bangladesh risks being washed away by the increasing floods caused by global warming. I agree with you that it has a lot of illiteracy, increasing religious extremism, corruption, and a culture of elitism and disregard for the poor by those who are very wealthy.
But - because all of that is true - doesn't it make staying all the more important?
Not really, it's lie building a sandcastle on a beach where the tide washes it away. There's no point. Your endeavour will never end and it will never have any results.
By the year 2100 I doubt there will be a nation called Bangladesh left on earth
Your sand castle analogy is nice - but it's completely devoid of human life. I can't change the world and I can't change the tides. But, if I can make a lasting difference in a handful - or even just one - person than wouldn't you say it's worth it?
Maybe if you the roles were reversed, and you were one of those villagers stuck in a coastal village in desperate need of emergency help or a helping hand - would you feel different?
It won't last, you're having no lasting impact whatsoever. That country is a political and economic hell hole and I'm not one of those pathetic villages and if I was I'd work my ass off to get out of such a hell hole like your parents and move to a richer more civilized place.
These people are doomed, you're wasting valuable resources on them.
If they can they should but its their own fault for letting the population climb to 150,000,000. Hell every couple of years they lose about 200,000 to a flood. The country is a waste
Yes, let's blame the poor for their own situation. Damn them for being born poor! They could have been born elsewhere but they choose to be born in a poor country trapped in a cycle of poverty!
No they're damned for being born in a shithole. Had they been born in a sustainable resource rich territory like the USA maybe they'd have some success but they're cursed to be born on a flood plain. They're screwed. You can't save everybody.
They may have been "born in a shithole" as you put it. But they're only "damned" if no one gives a damn about them.
And, why is it up to me to save everybody - or anybody for that matter. Shouldn't we all just care for those less off than ourselves? Isn't that what every moral and ethical code (be it religious or not) tells us to do?
No they're simply damned. They will never be able to be self sufficient or at least competitive.
No we don't need to care, there is no benefit and anyway we can't. We have limited resource. There is an oppurtunity cost helping one person at the expense of another. It is pointless to help in situations where they are screwed as in Bangladesh. Morality is relative, it changes depending on situation.
I appreciate your honesty. You go down a slipperly slope when you say morality is relative though. I believe every human has inalienable rights - that are endowed by something greater than ourselves. I'm not paraphrasing the Bible - I'm paraphrasing one the world's greatest constitutions.
And that constitution has been abused so many times. If you put two families on an island with enough food for one family, watch the killing begin. It's that simple. It may not be right but it's the truth. Just look all through human history and you will see my point.
Rights don't exist without a human brain contemplating them. Just as easily as they can be contemplated they can be forgotten whether it is the holocaust, eugenics in Spartan society or South asian fathers and chinese fathers killing daughters for a male heir
Racism is really quite a new subset phenomenon of fear of the unknown. Go ask any god fearing black or White American what they think of muslims and you'll most likely get the same xenophobic response. But this has nothing to do with compassion but viability. bangladesh is not a viable candidate for success.
by giod fearing I mean fanatical christian, people of different races can get along but they'll hide behind a new form of identity whether it be religion, nationalism whatever to hate the outsider but thats not the point. It's viability and Bangladesh is not viable
Okay. Let's say I agree to all you've said: 1) morality is relative, 2) there is limited resources, 3) Bangladesh is not viable, 4) the constitution of America has been abused, and 5) we don't need to be compassionate to others.
In that case, I think I should forcibly have you switch places with someone living in extreme poverty in Bangladesh. Forget your rights, morality is relative according to you. I think they'd use your position in life better (and less critically) than you seem to be.
Welcome to human history. Rome Vs. carthage. The USA vs. The natives. You can try but you'd lose. If I have to choose between my quality of life and anothers I choose mine and so would a majority of the planet. This is how the world works, I'm sorry
I'm not racist, there's nothing inferior about Bengalis but their environment (Bangladesh) is not viable for economic success let alone survival since it will fall under the waves.
I only think its a waste because whatever you do will not have a long term positive impact. That country is doomed
We always fight over resources and we always will. The biggest problem for your Bengalis is that they were norn in a shithole with a massive population which is unsustainable on crappy land that gets flooded constantly. Had they been born in say S. Korea in the 1950's were there were less resources but improvements were easier to keep due to lack of floods and massive overpopulation etc...
You're wasting your life, these people are doomed. You might as well go home, get your major then make some money and try and build up the society that you're in (Canada) and know which can be successful instead of trying to resuscitate this dead horse.
I actually already have my major - it was my Masters & PhD that I didn't complete in order to start this project.
Your knowledge of Bangladesh - especially it's family elite politics and corruption - is quite good. Do you have a family history here? Why so pissed at Bangladesh? What did it do to you?
And, as I should add to what I said a moment ago, if the majority of the people didn't have your attitude and write off places they call "shitholes" and people who "are damned because they are born in shitholes" than maybe we could solve these extreme problems in our lifetime.
Most of the rising nations today are picking themselves up, they live in relatively sustainable environments where improvement can be built and kept. That's the big difference. helping is one thing but trying to resuscitate a dead horse is another. Bangladesh is a dead horse. I'm sorry but it is
You have a narrow sense of history. The United States gained a lot from both forced migration (i.e. slavery - not hating, just saying) and migration from other nations. The strongest, best, and brightest of the world helped create America, Canada, and England for what it is today.
I believe those who are aware of this should have global - instead of a provincial - compassion.
The united states was big enough and environmentally stable enough to take those influxes of humans. Put those same people in Great Britain and watch that little Island collapse. bangladesh doesn't have the innate qualities for success but failure.
There maybe limited resources. But the wants are very basic - to not die prematurely, to have clean water, to be able to earn a living, to be able to send their kids to school.
We may have limited resources, but when it costs so little to give the basics there is no reason why we shouldn't.
And, if you were a villager in one of these villages, I'm sure you'd want the same opportunities to better yourself.
Again if I was a villager I'd want out. And thats quite immoral, so they can be satisfied with the basics but me in the west can have a first world lifestyle and debauchery. The principle of limited resources comes in. They will want that lifestyle but they can't get it and even the basics will have to be subsidised from an external force which does not exist and in bad economic times would collapse. Sorry Bangladesh is screwed
No you don't get what I'm saying, what you're saying is not possible but if it were it is immoral and wouoldn't work since the people with the basics would want what the people with more i.e. me in the west has and you would ergo be keeping them down with the basics because if you gave any more resources to them the system falls and do you really think people are going to want to subsidise others with no benefit in return? not happening or possible
While you guys can continue talking about the big picture, I was just going to point out that sometimes, helping people is not always about the big picture.
Even if you're right and Bangladesh may never be capable of success, I still don't think he would be wasting his life. The big picture is comprised of individual people, and if he or we can change one or just a few people's lives, I'd say it was worth it.
Honestly, I think your outlook is one of the major components of all failure. Belief that change can happen. I think that most anything is possible, even if the chances may be slim. If you convince yourself that it's impossible, it will be impossible. It seems that you've done a pretty good job of that so far. Convincing yourself something is right or moral doesn't mean it is, but it does make you feel better about yourself.
What you are saying is simply fantasy. With right project foods can be controlled. If Nederland would have think like you they would be under water, if Japan would think the same they will all dead because of daily earthquakes. The Mekong river was also causing floods in the past but now the dam system is controlling it.
and the country around are also developing countries, doomed as you think. Vietnam was doomed and now is rising is Asia, Thailand , Indonesia, Cambodgia etc are coming from behind. the benefit of helping others is huge because it ensures the stability of the planet it open new markets it increase opportunities for business if you want to think only in the pragmatic way.
You know when Mohamad Yunus a doomed Nobel price Bengali made the micro credits they thought also he is crazy. Now his project is copied in many countries. The world is doomed only when people start to think like you and prefer to put their heads in the sand and do nothing with the excuse that anyway others are also not doing anything.
This is such a wonderful thing.. It's so much more positive-minded than the expensive tear-jerker guilt-inducing-charity style help. I wish I could do what you do. It's been awesome watching the videos!
Good job Shawn, May God(Allah) bless your efforts, the whole world is messed up. But it's good to watch impoverished nations, then you really appreciate what you have, everyday I wake up and curse fate for giving me a nice house instead of a mansion, a Bimmer instead of a Ferrari, a girlfriend who is nice looking instead of super model looking. You really begin to appreciate what you have when see someone who doesn't have anything at all.
Hi Shawn. I am aware that its not a charity. I have watched most of your videos and I really like the work you are doing. I just want to be a small part of it if possible. I''ll be working a few more days next week and I'll be donating all that money to you. Best of luck man. I'll keep helping as much I can. Cheers!!! God Bless.
those kid in the video will always be one of those in my prayer...God protect this kids from any harm, cruelty and injustice in the world, make them be among of those who closest to you and lead them to be successful in life and hereafter....amin
i was talking to some teenagers who consider to end up his/her life the other day....i hope they see this video and reconsider their thoughts back...this children in the video eventho they born in the most worse condition in the world n never felt any luxury in their life compare to us but they always had value their life everyday w/o giving up and with hope to change their life in the future so if those 'emo' teenagers think their life suck.let me myself put 'you' in this kids condition
Working as a commercial artist in the NYC area allows me to meet many people from many far away places.
I am always inspired by the humble and earthly qualities of the people of Bangladesh!
I am very unhappy that such spiritual people can be besieged by such heartbreak and fully appreciate your valued work in bringing brightness to the Children of this ignored region of the Earth.
There is a form you can fill out to be reimbursed for those lost minutes. There is a link in one of my videos. I forget which one though - so best watch them all and find out which one...
Hi, I've been watching your videos for a few months now. I'm not sure if I've commented on them before or not, but I just wanted to say that what you are doing is so great! My boyfriend, who has been living in America for 4 years now, is from Dhaka, Bangladesh, he is living here in Louisiana working on his MBA.
Hey, i'm a bangali living in michigan...ur doing great work brotha! keep it up. Wish the political situation would get better over there - believe me there are a lot of ppl who want to help but the channels they have to go through are just so corrupted (not all but many)...ne ways i'll do what i can soon. Keep up the good work though u inspire a lot of people like me.
What you're doing is absolutely amazing and - after I finish high school - I want to do something similar thank you thank you thank you for decreasing the amount of suck in the world :)
Thanks :-) You don't have to donate to me. There are a lot of charities that are setup specifically to help children in situations like these. And they have everything already setup to accept your donations in the most efficient manner :-)
Hey xplicit, there are tons of charities and organizations that need volunteers like you. You don't need to tag along with me (I'm not sure I have the ability to do that anyways). But, there are tons of charities that could use your help - not just in Bangladesh either.
wow. i've always wanted to do something like this, you're truly inspirational. my church goes down to mexico every other year to do similar type work with schools and children there, and i cannot wait to participate.
just wondering, do you speak the language, or do you have a translator with you?
I am trying to learn the language - and the locals say I speak it quite well. But, many of the Bengalis living abroad who see my work love to criticize how I speak Bengali.
Hey sajal, I'm not an organization - just a guy. So it would be hard to get involved like that. But there are tons of ways to help. If you found this inspirational - please pay it forward. When you get the chance, maybe do similar service work somewhere in the world?
As a Bangladeshi, I'd like to thank you for the initiative you took to help the poor in that country. You've also motivated me to want to do something. Now I want to volunteer there over summer.
i run my own company, and iv just come up with a great idea!!! i sack all my workers and get these kids in, instead. Il make a fortune!!! happy days!!avit!!!!!!
i dont know if this is a stupid suggestion but there is a paint you can get that turns any flat surface into a chalkboard so it can be put directly on the wall and one can could do more than one room, might help cut costs. i think its really great what your doing. what beautiful children.
hey froofgirl, I think that's how they actually custom made the blackboard. They used some special paint but it takes multiple coats and several days to dry. So I gave the cash for that - but did not get to see the final product unfortunately.
its not a silly question, im a painter by trade, you can buy black board paint from any good paint supliers, think its made by international, in the uk, hope that helps, see i am use full somtimes mother
hey pilky, I thought I had replied to this earlier - but I guess my comment didn't go through. I think when they made the custom made blackboard - they were actually using the local equivalent of black board paint. But since it takes over 7 days to complete - i never got to see the finished product.
its not a silly question, im a painter by trade, you can buy black board paint from any good paint supliers, think its made by international, in the uk, hope that helps, see i am use full somtimes mother
Hi! sorry if this question has been answered already, but what ways is it possible to donate? and are there other ways that i can help out seeing as regular donations would be tricky for me? and by the way...you are so awesome! =D
hey magiclovesserenity, I am accepting donations now but I would still prefer people donated to regular charities instead of me. There is a full list of recommended charities on my blog. But if you still want to donate - you can check out my blog and there should be a link there for my PayPal account.
I love it. I, like alot of other people, saw John Green's viodeblog on the Uncultured Project. I really love the idea of it, and as he stated, how it is not them, it's all of us. Last Christmas I went to India, and the culture was amazing - men and women who have no money have more warmth than anyone here in New York. I'm only 15, but when I'm older, I look forward to doing something in the same vein of what you are doing.
no way. im very surprised of how cheap things can be bought for. thanx for showing all your videos and thank you for making such a difference on th lies of others.
I didn't know that you could buy all those supplies so cheaply! The war in Iraq costs about $4,000,000 a day. If the US gets out of there, we could help a lot of people!
Wow, thank you for posting this. I'm going to Sri Lanka this summer, and this video gave me somes ideas for what I can do. I have some money saved up which I like to call "France-fund" (money I've been saving to go to France), but I figure I can spare a few hundred. I will definately be donating money to some of the schools and orphanages there. Especailly near the ocean side where the tsunami hit. Alot of the schools there haven't really recovered (corrupt government and all).
hey leotardsandbikerboot - that sounds like an awesome idea. Can you film it and put your work on YouTube? If so, you could pass your work on and inspire others.
More people need to be doing this - and sharing what they do with others online.
wow, that kid can sing really good. And everything you bought for them! That was really cheap, if I had a credit card, I would probably donate some money to you
5 people are idiots and jerks

@ImaginedWriter Hi - you're also speaking to a sociologist. So let me say that the stats you're citing can only speak to level of education attained.
You being Bengali and passionate about helping these people affects your assessment of them
ImaginedWriter 1 year ago
@ImaginedWriter I speak both as someone who is passionate but also as an academic who has spent years studying the stats. You're wrong. You're stats are wrong. You're conclusions are wrong. The numbers you are citing are wrong. Period.
But if you want to get points as a racist? You're doing fine. Again, please keep your rants of this tone to a minimum. I'm all for free speech - but I'm anti-ignorant hate spam.
UnculturedProject 1 year ago
@UnculturedProject It is not racist, the east asians seem to have a higher average IQ than europeans while south asians have a lower IQ then the aforementioned groups. This comes from the work of Richard Lynn Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, and Dr. Tatu Vanhanen, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Tampere, Tampere, Finland in their book IQ and the wealth of nations.
ImaginedWriter 1 year ago
@ImaginedWriter The idea that there is a genetic component to intelligence that can be applied to large swats of people based on continental region ("South Asian" vs "East Asian") or skin tone ("black" vs "white") has been disproved. Granted, there are variations in standardized testing but these test sometimes skew based on cultural understanding of the questions being asked.
UnculturedProject 1 year ago
@ImaginedWriter Clearly, you have a lot to say and these video page comments and channel is not the platform for you to push your pro-abortion, anti-religion (of any denomination), calling poor "ignorant" and "low IQ" agenda. I am sad to say I must cut this conversation short by blocking you.

GEEZ!

LostSimply 2 years ago
I'm really sorry you feel this way. It doesn't matter if the people he helps dies in five years from a flood he help better they lives for the moment. Plus any of us could be killed by a flood or natural or nuclear disaster at any moment. Just because you live in an industrialized nation doesn't guaranty your safety. All life is worth the same no matter how much money you have or where you live in the world!!
KaylaCakes87 2 years ago
How can you say it's pointless when he even got the attention of such a cynical person as yourself??? By tyour own argument we should stop sending our own kids to school because they might catch the mexican flew next week... it would be pointless to waste time on their education. We are all going to dei someday, but the point is to make the most of the time we've got, or in this case: to help others make the most of their life and times.
timverdel 2 years ago
Dude come back to Canada. Bangladesh is a worthless shit hole that can't be helped. For one thing anything you build will be washed away in floods, the country is overly religious and therefore retarded with massive illiteracy. It has massive corruption and family elite politics. In a hundred years it will fall beneath the ways. Leave it and get a job back in Canada. You're wasting your time.
LostSimply 2 years ago
*fall beneath the waves
LostSimply 2 years ago
I agree with you that Bangladesh risks being washed away by the increasing floods caused by global warming. I agree with you that it has a lot of illiteracy, increasing religious extremism, corruption, and a culture of elitism and disregard for the poor by those who are very wealthy.
But - because all of that is true - doesn't it make staying all the more important?
UnculturedProject 2 years ago
Not really, it's lie building a sandcastle on a beach where the tide washes it away. There's no point. Your endeavour will never end and it will never have any results.
By the year 2100 I doubt there will be a nation called Bangladesh left on earth
LostSimply 2 years ago
Your sand castle analogy is nice - but it's completely devoid of human life. I can't change the world and I can't change the tides. But, if I can make a lasting difference in a handful - or even just one - person than wouldn't you say it's worth it?
Maybe if you the roles were reversed, and you were one of those villagers stuck in a coastal village in desperate need of emergency help or a helping hand - would you feel different?
UnculturedProject 2 years ago
It won't last, you're having no lasting impact whatsoever. That country is a political and economic hell hole and I'm not one of those pathetic villages and if I was I'd work my ass off to get out of such a hell hole like your parents and move to a richer more civilized place.
These people are doomed, you're wasting valuable resources on them.
LostSimply 2 years ago
So your solution is that every "pathetic villager" (as you put it) leave the country? Cool - can they move into your place?
UnculturedProject 2 years ago
If they can they should but its their own fault for letting the population climb to 150,000,000. Hell every couple of years they lose about 200,000 to a flood. The country is a waste
LostSimply 2 years ago
Yes, let's blame the poor for their own situation. Damn them for being born poor! They could have been born elsewhere but they choose to be born in a poor country trapped in a cycle of poverty!
UnculturedProject 2 years ago
No they're damned for being born in a shithole. Had they been born in a sustainable resource rich territory like the USA maybe they'd have some success but they're cursed to be born on a flood plain. They're screwed. You can't save everybody.
LostSimply 2 years ago
They may have been "born in a shithole" as you put it. But they're only "damned" if no one gives a damn about them.
And, why is it up to me to save everybody - or anybody for that matter. Shouldn't we all just care for those less off than ourselves? Isn't that what every moral and ethical code (be it religious or not) tells us to do?
UnculturedProject 2 years ago
No they're simply damned. They will never be able to be self sufficient or at least competitive.
No we don't need to care, there is no benefit and anyway we can't. We have limited resource. There is an oppurtunity cost helping one person at the expense of another. It is pointless to help in situations where they are screwed as in Bangladesh. Morality is relative, it changes depending on situation.
I'm not hating, i'm just being honest
LostSimply 2 years ago
I appreciate your honesty. You go down a slipperly slope when you say morality is relative though. I believe every human has inalienable rights - that are endowed by something greater than ourselves. I'm not paraphrasing the Bible - I'm paraphrasing one the world's greatest constitutions.
UnculturedProject 2 years ago
And that constitution has been abused so many times. If you put two families on an island with enough food for one family, watch the killing begin. It's that simple. It may not be right but it's the truth. Just look all through human history and you will see my point.
LostSimply 2 years ago
Rights don't exist without a human brain contemplating them. Just as easily as they can be contemplated they can be forgotten whether it is the holocaust, eugenics in Spartan society or South asian fathers and chinese fathers killing daughters for a male heir
LostSimply 2 years ago
I see human history and I see people overcoming racism, people creating beautiful art, poetry, and architecture.
You seem to have little faith in humanity. Perhaps because you assume everyone in humanity has your attitude. They don't.
UnculturedProject 2 years ago
Racism is really quite a new subset phenomenon of fear of the unknown. Go ask any god fearing black or White American what they think of muslims and you'll most likely get the same xenophobic response. But this has nothing to do with compassion but viability. bangladesh is not a viable candidate for success.
LostSimply 2 years ago
by giod fearing I mean fanatical christian, people of different races can get along but they'll hide behind a new form of identity whether it be religion, nationalism whatever to hate the outsider but thats not the point. It's viability and Bangladesh is not viable
LostSimply 2 years ago
UnculturedProject 2 years ago
Welcome to human history. Rome Vs. carthage. The USA vs. The natives. You can try but you'd lose. If I have to choose between my quality of life and anothers I choose mine and so would a majority of the planet. This is how the world works, I'm sorry
LostSimply 2 years ago
This was a fascinating conversation. You may have the last word. I have work to do. Albeit, work you think is a waste - but work nonetheless.
Thank you for not being overly racist in your comments. It's one of the reasons I bothered to reply.
UnculturedProject 2 years ago
I'm not racist, there's nothing inferior about Bengalis but their environment (Bangladesh) is not viable for economic success let alone survival since it will fall under the waves.
I only think its a waste because whatever you do will not have a long term positive impact. That country is doomed
LostSimply 2 years ago
We always fight over resources and we always will. The biggest problem for your Bengalis is that they were norn in a shithole with a massive population which is unsustainable on crappy land that gets flooded constantly. Had they been born in say S. Korea in the 1950's were there were less resources but improvements were easier to keep due to lack of floods and massive overpopulation etc...
LostSimply 2 years ago
tell me when was the last time you helped someone.
Blame it on the nature of the earth that bangladesh needed low lands.
Buddy, the world doesnt revolve around you, and the world is not perfect eithier...
i bet you didnt even thinking about half the things this guy did.
Go live in your own ignorant world.
kaz6199 2 years ago 2
You're wasting your life, these people are doomed. You might as well go home, get your major then make some money and try and build up the society that you're in (Canada) and know which can be successful instead of trying to resuscitate this dead horse.
LostSimply 2 years ago
I actually already have my major - it was my Masters & PhD that I didn't complete in order to start this project.
Your knowledge of Bangladesh - especially it's family elite politics and corruption - is quite good. Do you have a family history here? Why so pissed at Bangladesh? What did it do to you?
UnculturedProject 2 years ago
I have no family history but I like to think I am mildly knowledgeable about worldwide current events whether it be Pakistan, Darfur or the USA.
Some places are brilliant for human habitation and success while others are not.
LostSimply 2 years ago
If this is wasting me life - I want to spend the rest of my life wasting it like this. Sorry.
UnculturedProject 2 years ago
And, as I should add to what I said a moment ago, if the majority of the people didn't have your attitude and write off places they call "shitholes" and people who "are damned because they are born in shitholes" than maybe we could solve these extreme problems in our lifetime.
UnculturedProject 2 years ago
Most of the rising nations today are picking themselves up, they live in relatively sustainable environments where improvement can be built and kept. That's the big difference. helping is one thing but trying to resuscitate a dead horse is another. Bangladesh is a dead horse. I'm sorry but it is
LostSimply 2 years ago
You have a narrow sense of history. The United States gained a lot from both forced migration (i.e. slavery - not hating, just saying) and migration from other nations. The strongest, best, and brightest of the world helped create America, Canada, and England for what it is today.
I believe those who are aware of this should have global - instead of a provincial - compassion.
UnculturedProject 2 years ago
The united states was big enough and environmentally stable enough to take those influxes of humans. Put those same people in Great Britain and watch that little Island collapse. bangladesh doesn't have the innate qualities for success but failure.
LostSimply 2 years ago
Limited resources and unlimited wants, sorry but that problem will always be there no matter how efficiently you allocate resources
LostSimply 2 years ago
There maybe limited resources. But the wants are very basic - to not die prematurely, to have clean water, to be able to earn a living, to be able to send their kids to school.
We may have limited resources, but when it costs so little to give the basics there is no reason why we shouldn't.
And, if you were a villager in one of these villages, I'm sure you'd want the same opportunities to better yourself.
UnculturedProject 2 years ago
Again if I was a villager I'd want out. And thats quite immoral, so they can be satisfied with the basics but me in the west can have a first world lifestyle and debauchery. The principle of limited resources comes in. They will want that lifestyle but they can't get it and even the basics will have to be subsidised from an external force which does not exist and in bad economic times would collapse. Sorry Bangladesh is screwed
LostSimply 2 years ago
I wasn't talking about debauchery. Quite the leap, eh? I'm talking about clean water and schooling - nothing else.
UnculturedProject 2 years ago
No you don't get what I'm saying, what you're saying is not possible but if it were it is immoral and wouoldn't work since the people with the basics would want what the people with more i.e. me in the west has and you would ergo be keeping them down with the basics because if you gave any more resources to them the system falls and do you really think people are going to want to subsidise others with no benefit in return? not happening or possible
LostSimply 2 years ago
While you guys can continue talking about the big picture, I was just going to point out that sometimes, helping people is not always about the big picture.
Even if you're right and Bangladesh may never be capable of success, I still don't think he would be wasting his life. The big picture is comprised of individual people, and if he or we can change one or just a few people's lives, I'd say it was worth it.
TMParrish2011 2 years ago 6
Honestly, I think your outlook is one of the major components of all failure. Belief that change can happen. I think that most anything is possible, even if the chances may be slim. If you convince yourself that it's impossible, it will be impossible. It seems that you've done a pretty good job of that so far. Convincing yourself something is right or moral doesn't mean it is, but it does make you feel better about yourself.
TMParrish2011 2 years ago 2
What you are saying is simply fantasy. With right project foods can be controlled. If Nederland would have think like you they would be under water, if Japan would think the same they will all dead because of daily earthquakes. The Mekong river was also causing floods in the past but now the dam system is controlling it.
vilyaarda 2 years ago
and the country around are also developing countries, doomed as you think. Vietnam was doomed and now is rising is Asia, Thailand , Indonesia, Cambodgia etc are coming from behind. the benefit of helping others is huge because it ensures the stability of the planet it open new markets it increase opportunities for business if you want to think only in the pragmatic way.
vilyaarda 2 years ago
You know when Mohamad Yunus a doomed Nobel price Bengali made the micro credits they thought also he is crazy. Now his project is copied in many countries. The world is doomed only when people start to think like you and prefer to put their heads in the sand and do nothing with the excuse that anyway others are also not doing anything.

hey froofgirl, I think that's how they actually custom made the blackboard. They used some special paint but it takes multiple coats and several days to dry. So I gave the cash for that - but did not get to see the final product unfortunately.

Hi! sorry if this question has been answered already, but what ways is it possible to donate? and are there other ways that i can help out seeing as regular donations would be tricky for me? and by the way...you are so awesome! =D
magicloveserenity 3 years ago
hey magiclovesserenity, I am accepting donations now but I would still prefer people donated to regular charities instead of me. There is a full list of recommended charities on my blog. But if you still want to donate - you can check out my blog and there should be a link there for my PayPal account.

How can we help? Is there an address for a place we can send money or supplies?

Thank you again.

hey leotardsandbikerboot - that sounds like an awesome idea. Can you film it and put your work on YouTube? If so, you could pass your work on and inspire others.
More people need to be doing this - and sharing what they do with others online.

wow, that kid can sing really good. And everything you bought for them! That was really cheap, if I had a credit card, I would probably donate some money to you
