  • too much Mike Love, not enough Brian Wilson

  • really?? im 72 model from norway, i was a baby when Beach boys were on top.but i grew up with theire music ( thank god ) i really meen that the kids today really miss out of the real great music ;) i love those guys...... REALLY LOVE THEM..Linda marie ;)

  • Great song and splendid vocals

  • They sound pretty good live. I don't know when this was filmed but they were obviously older than in the 60's and they still rocked

  • i need an explanation for love's vocoder-esque vocals - quite confusing!!

  • it only sounds like mike love has autotune! the other guys sound live. mike sounds kinda sick. so maybe thats why

  • Well it sounds cool. Live in those days guess they did not have what they have today but the harmonies are nice. I like his vocals. Not 100% but the concert tune is fantastic. Fun Fun Fun Wayne

  • Autotune on love's voice? shame..

  • How can you people tell it's autotuned or whatever manipulation that might be present. I agree that I hear a ride when Dennis is playing the hi hat. By the way......why do so many of the comments from this concert include such admiration for Dennis? He wasn't THAT good of a drummer.....Is there some kind of Beach Boy history I'm missing?

  • @XtrmMcjohnson your right he wasnt the greatest drummer but doing songs about surfing was his idea and he wrote songs chased groupies produced charles manson demos

  • @XtrmMcjohnson The autotune claims are crap. Anybody who knows this era of Beach Boy live concerts knows that wasn't possible. Your point about Dennis as a drummer is interesting. He himself used to say he wasn't a fancy frills drummer (he wasn't Pert!), but his energy was hard to describe...kind of a desperately enthusiastic style that elevated many songs not made for drummers. He had an influence too. People like Max Weinberg have talked about him as an early influence. Hope this helps.

  • @XtrmMcjohnson Theres one thing called technical skills and another thing called feeling. Dennis probably wasn't up there with Buddy Rich or Neil Peart pure technical, but when it comes to the feeling and the way he plays, I could listen to him all day. Btw anyone with half a brain can realize that this isn't autotuned. The reason you see him hit the hi hat when you hear a ride is probably because back then they synced the pictures with the audio recording, they probably used the wrong picture

  • The Beach Boys Manuel autotune

  • mike is so good

  • Overall one of the best performances ever by The Beach Boys --- I have seen them over 35 times when they sang as they sang as the original group --- probably the last great performance by dennis on the drums --- he was really into it ---

  • Big time autotune on this one. The backing vocals sound surprisingly perfect.. although the drumming throughout is frickin amazing. I have a desktape of a show at a university show in 1966, definitely not dubbed, definitely not tuned, and although it's a little inconsistent the performances are mostly an absolute knockout.

  • @alexwhiteesp

Yes I am SURE they used Autotune here..... sigh. This is a band that didn't need to use it unlike most nowadays.

  • @wamx3806 but with the computer THE MAN can manipulate anyone! who doesn't love that...

  • @alexwhiteesp Because autotune existed 17 years before it was released, right? Fucking moron.

  • Oh, Mike.

  • one of al jardines finest performances,he carries the high notes here majesticly.

awesome stuff, and a memorable performance from one of the greatest groups ever.

  • t-pain on lead vox

  • To me, it really matters not how this DVD was created. The fact is, in 1980, this was a fantastic performance by The Legendary Original Beach Boys, & for that alone, & to see Dennis hit those drums as only he would--could--makes this a classic gem. For a lifetime fan as I am, this is truly bittersweet. Wolfsky9

  • Katy Perry can sucked it !

  • lots of overdubs on this....ride cymbal for one, dennis playing hi hats and you hear ride!

  • @CLEVERDEVICES they didn't, there is a second drummer behind Al

  • @CLEVERDEVICES The ride your hearing is from Billy Hinsche who is a percussionist. He is lower left of Dennis honestly some people just want to look for over dubbing on everything, I was at this concert and it WAS this good. AND it was ALL live

  • @IainB1511 I asked a member of the backing band, who will go unnamed, but was onstage, they cleaned this up a little, Billy Hinsche is an organ and guitar player, the guy playing percussion is Bobby Figeroua.

They cleaned up little things like bad notes, and bad sound. Thanks!

  • They overdubbed the ride cymbal, when Dennis is playing hihats, you clearly hear the ride....the guys were a mess on this one!

  • wheres the tall bass player?:(

  • there's no autotune, he's just a brilliant singer

  • i hear no autotune... :\

  • Dennis Wilson was amazing and underated. He made this song in the vid. Great intro by Dennis. Mike Love probably regrets the way he treated him.

  • @dlaird8 I highly doubt that Mike regrets how he treated him. I do bet everyone else regrets or regretted it after his death. I think he was jealous because Denny was the true beach boy and did the surfing and car racing unlike the rest. Dennis Wilson is love :)

  • @gswgirl87 While Love does come off as a douche, the whole "Mike is Satan" myth is for simpletons that need a simple black-white, good-bad view of everything. Face it, Dennis wasn't exactly a good person either. A sexual degenerate, monstrous alcoholic (coke and heroin abuser too) who had to be removed from the band due to his conduct. Unprofessional too, skipping gigs and lots of recording sessions. But, because he was handsome and his last name was "Wilson" it's excused and considered funny.

  • @peterp21

Wilson was falling apart by this period but remember he had high artistic imput to the band 1968-1974, he wrote some of the best songs on Friends and Sunflower. Not to mention his solo effort Pacific Ocean Blue from 1977 and his almost completed follow-up Bambu both of which are praised today as evidence of his large talent for songwriting and singing despite his deteriorating voice. He was also one of the saner voices when it came to evaluating SMiLE and Mike's late 70's BB albums

  • @peterp21 well, mike love was a sexual degenerate -not, much more than dennis- and alcoholic too... the difference is that Dennis Wilson was the mos talented beach boy after Brian Wilson, and Mike Love was no talented at all... but you say something that is true: it's not a simple black and white thing. Every Beach Boy have something to regret. Well, every human being have it...

  • @JulioLeonFandinho All Mike Love is good for is pacing back and forth on stage.

  • Sounds like auto tune on mike, does anyone else hear that?

  • @topdoggm16 oh my god... I think I do...

  • @topdoggm16 Nahh, cause during the ending refrain there's an audio track doing the "I wish they all could be California Girls" on playback while Mike is actually singing "Girls, Girls, Girls".

  • @RazrHack but during the first verse, there's autotune all over Mike's voice, most obviously at the end of each line.

  • @lazrpo But autotune also didn't even exist until 1997, 17 years after this performance.

  • @RazrHack Autotune may not have existed, but multitrack recording did. They more than likely had Mike's voice (along with the other members of the band) each on a separate track so each voice, instrument, and microphone could be manipulated. And since this remastered DVD version was released in 2001, Autotune could have been applied to the recording.

  • @topdoggm16 yeh defo

  • mike love, I like the sound of his voice but he fair dinkum has the worst taste in clothes I have ever seen, greay beard, trucker hat and tite white pants??? And some kind of pink velvet shirt.... mah lawd, even looks ridiculous in his wikipedia pick.

  • @AlienBusDriver he only gets away with it because the minute he opens his mouth he's forgiven for looking so atrocious.

  • @AlienBusDriver Not to mention he can't write a song a song for shit and has turned the band into a laughing stock.

  • yay Mike!

  • i hear auto tune lol wat

  • Mike Love is such a massive dork. I like his "moves".

  • No one, I mean, NO ONE, ever banged those drums like DW did. One of his last " quality" perf's--ever. Classic. Wolfsky9
