It's true we do a poor job of taking care of our own. Having lived over seas and seen a more durable social safety net I agree that more of our $ should be spent on human capital. They all suffer from the poor choices they have made in their lives. Many of them never had a chance from the beginning of their lives, coming from homes that offered them nothing but grief.

They DO need help. They get it too. When they want to. They get a monthly check which they spend on their bad habits. they can check into a rehab facility any time they want to, and they do that occassionally. They avoid the shelters because the shelters are filled with people like themselves, who they hate, or who steal from them.

It is like a cancer. I know what the problem is. But I don't have the solution. That is silly to say. "You know the problem so you must know the answer."

The solutions to their problems are band aids at best. But we provide those band aids. They make the wrong choices for themselves based on an unfortunate set of serendipitous circumstances.( I doubt you can even understand me.)

Of course, we are all human. Nobody gets everything they want in life and everyone has fears. Is that a reason to give into drugs and alcohol, become a lowly street drunk or drug addict? And if a person is a drunk or a drug addict, shouldn't he first stop using the mind altering substance so he can think clearly before getting back on his feet? Why is sobriety to you bleeding hearts so irrelevant?
