  • i love this song

  • So sad that this song has to come after a very upbeat and innocent song. Pretty depressing, even though it is an addictive song, to me at least. Can't explain it. I can't relate to the subject matter, but for some reason it just sounds so good to me. I don't think I can get sick of listening to this.

  • I'd rather prefer Sia's version :)

  • Omfgosh WHO IS CUTTING THE ONIONS??????????

  • What's glorious about this song is that it can be interpreted as being about Madonna and her father, OR about Madonna's relationship to her repressive Catholic upbringing.

  • Shut up ppl with the sob stories

  • @malt8291 HAHAHAHA YOU´RE REALLY RIGHT BOY

  • @malt8291

Music makes the people come together - Madonna

    Internet's not for you.

  • @ABDC3699 This comment section is not 4 u baby

  • Wow Like a prayer and Ray of light are truly magnificent albums by Madonna!

  • @plamenlesev absolutelly agree!!!!!!!!!!!

  • When the music was for music !!! long life Madonna !!!

  • Sweet

  • Madonna's music has helped me through every single year of my life. Long live the Queen!

  • Love thos song so powerful!!!!

  • QUEEN OF POP

  • Still my favorite after all those years!

  • My oh my... This song gets to me. It reminds me of my beloved best friend. "You can't hurt me now..." This is yet another wonder from the world's greatest lover!

  • My dad walked out, but he was still a wonderful father...it is my mother that was a monster.

  • Her best 80s record!!!!!

  • This song is raw and emotional. You can feel her sorrow and pain at the SAME time! Love you Madonna!

  • An album bigger than life

  • Love the contrast between Oh Father and Dear Jessie

  • Lady WHO?

  • she's had some amazing gems such as this, extending back to her first album. i am so proud to regard Madonna as my favorite music artist.

  • never understood the lyrics. Untill today :(

  • my dad never beat me or my siblings but he showed no real affection either. and i beleive its my granparents on his side is at fault. it most likely hurt him when they denied physical affection> which is why i feel bad for him and this song is for him. But i still love my pops....M is a great songwriter!!

  • @imtroublet same here i love my dad but he showed no effection whenn i was young

  • THE LYRICS OF THIS SONG ARE SO POWERFUL!!!

JUST MADONNA CAN WRITE AND SING THIS KIND OF SONGS!!!

    IT JUST MOVE MY HEART!!

AND I NEVER MEET MY FATHER IN MY LIFE, SO I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS THAT THING CALLED "FATHER AND DAUGHTER RELATIONSHIP" BUT THIS SONG MAKES ME CRY AND THINK ABOUT IT =,(

  • bless you sweetheart xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • My dad abuses me and this song always makes me cry but it's good that I cry during this song so that he doesn't yell at me for crying like he always does... It's true btw, you do get used to the tears and the pain.

  • this song is perfect. Since when I had 8 years I listen this song, and everytime I cry, when I listen..

  • Flawless

  • i love the song, but don't like the dark video

  • i miss my dad so so much ..... and when i listen this song ..... i always cry

  • This song and 'Promise to Try' from the same album are both hugely underrated songs that, in my opinion, are better than Madonna's more well known hit single's.

  • My Dad left my mum when I was a baby, and it's never bothered me. If I met him I would beat the living shite out of him because of what he done to my Mum but....when I think about it if I made a girl pregnent I would do the same thing...but i'm a bad person, so : p

  • I LOVE the vagueness in the lyrics: Is she talking about God, her father, or both??? This is what made Oh Father, as well as Like a Prayer an album that even Madonna haters HAD to admire. This is one of MANY brilliant songs by an artistic genius. Remember, Madonna was a straight A student, and got into U of Michigan for dance (one of the most prestigious schools in the country). She's no dummy, and it shows up in her music.

  • Never mind my mom loves me

  • I got use to being lonley

  • My father left me my mom hates me im all alone

  • @rafaelc53 Don't be sad your not alone (hugs)

  • I like the fact that she sounds like she's crying or maybe she was when she was singing it.

  • I dedicate this song to my abusive father..i will never forget all the terrible things he had said and done to me. he is a shameful disgrace. I wish i was never born to such a man. .. he did nothing at all for me!!

  • It`s sad how people think Madonna, and they think "Like A Virgin" and "Material Girl".

  • Like a Prayer is Madonna's Magnum Opus, and this is one example of why

  • @reachingsumwhere ALL HER ALBUMS ARE EPIC!!!

  • What a fucking amazing artist, she really is 2nd only to the beatles for the best back catalogue, and she might even eclipse them as she still has more hits to come

  • the world is victims of victims. Behind every mans pain is another mans. Hardest lesson to learn

  • Madonna has always been the inspiration for living my life on my terms. Look here I am. This is who I am. Deal with it or move on.

  • Oh father, you never wanted to live that way

you never wanted to hurt me

    why am I running away?

    Maybe someday

When I look back, I'll be able to say

You didn't mean to cruel, somebody hurt you too

  • "Maybe somebody, when I look back, I'll be able to say, you didn't mean to be cruel -- somebody hurt you too." I find this song particularly moving, and, yes, all the more so because I was abused by own father. Her voice is real, and she allows it to "break" at the end. Like "Sweet Baby Vixen", it moves me as well.

  • happy fathers day!

  • I love all of Madonna's work and always will but this song is truly poignant and touching. Cuts right through you. I don't just listen to listen, it brings up so many things. Especially to all us kids from abused and broken homes. There are a lot of us out there and we carry that forever but like Madonna who sings of that pain and of hope, we also now have the power we once never thought we could own and can move on.

  • Maybe someday when i look back ill be able to say you didnt mean to cruel somebody hurt you too.My fav part its so true it makes me wanna cry .the whole song i can relate to.

  • Lady Gaga is a turd that Madonna left in her toilet during the Blonde Ambition tour and was stolen by Warren Beatty, who hoped to clone Madonna and have her under his total control. Unfortunately, something went terribly wrong in the laboratory and the monstrous creature escaped and hitched a ride to New York.

  • @Messylin mentioning lady gaga on every video is getting TIRESOME, enough already!

  • This is one of the many songs from Madonna that explain why she is highly superior to Lady Gaga!

  • the patchouli oil scent on the CD was a nice touch in the packaging..this CD never left my player in May 1989

  • this song is very personal because i sometimes use to get punish by my father and listening to this song reminds me of that and the fact theat my father is dead

  • THIS SONG IS ABOUT ME AND MY FATHER.....I THOUGHT I'D NEVER GET AWAY FROM HIM!! THANK YOU GOD SO MUCH FOR LOOKING AFTER ME...I LUV YOU.

  • - ¿Eres promiscuo?

    - Sí.

    - ¿Te lo pasaste bien con tu amiguita?

    - Sí

    - ¿Te la has foscado?

    - It's not your f***ing business!

  • A very true song!:P

  • so beautiful madonna is amazing

  • @Pablosuper90 Erase the part that says "or any other female singer" and you've got a 100% true statement there.

  • @madeyes4u i have already done it, but i really think she's better than anyone (and i'm not a fan of her)

  • @Pablosuper90 Let's not get into an argument about personal favorite singers...

  • Not a Madonna fan..love this song.

  • GREAT SONG HAS SO MUCH MEANING TO IT,LOVE MADONNA

  • Thank you Madge. Thank you for lending voice to the voice within that I stifled all these years.

  • This song means so much to me <3

  • .. you once had the power ..

  • My real father ran off weeks after my mother learned she was pregnant with me. What man does that!! Its affected my whole outlook on life and times my relations with my mom/dad. Thirty six years later I still can't come to terms because of the fear/anger/hurt of not knowing why I was a bastard child. This song brings me too tears every time I hear it. Can't listen to it that often. Much love Madonna!

  • @sirex02

Remember you are never a mistake! <3

  • @sirex02 - When I was 14, my dad left too, without a word why or even a goodbye, one day he was there and the next he was gone. I'm now 19, I still have not heard a thing, it's effected my trust with people and my relationships don't go well. I alway's just end up leaving the girl because I just want to get away from them, I fear I'm going to just run out on my kids to. I tell myself everyday I'm better than he was, he's no man, he's still only a boy, I was more of a man at 14 taking care of me.

  • Comment removed

  • @sirex02 Same thing happen to me but both my parents left me. I am 36 and still trying to find them to ask them why. This song means a lot to me as well.

  • P. Leonard is legend, don't know why he rode Madonna's coattails, allowing her to tag herself as a co-writer. The only songs Madonna had a hand in were 'Sorry' and 'I'm So Stupid', where she basically rhymes "stupid" with "stupid".

  • I like this song

    when i was verry happy

    Tommie

  • This song is my song as a survivor. My mother abused me in many ways. My parish priest said it was her right. When she almost killed me, my father took primary custody of me. I left the Roman Catholic church and I now have a priest who believes me along with the medical reports. Liars take on

many forms. Remember a mother can abuse as equally as a father. This song helped me to heal. I hope it heals others, because if we are united; how can we fail?

  • I got this album on vinyl on my 12th birthday in 1989 ... oh jesus

  • i love the song, its such a beutiful song

  • Love Madonna

    Love this song

  • Madonna's version is by far superior in the emotions compared to Sia's horrible remake.

  • So powerfull song... Real Madonna;)

  • I love this song... I used to sing it all the time when I was 14-15. After a while I listened in closer to the part of the song talking about how the father never wanted to live the way he did and that maybe someone hurt him too. Made me think about the possibility that maybe someone hurt my bio-father... When thinking on that topic though I also think of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young: Teach Your Children....

  • @Rain4732 PT2 For those of you who don't know I recommend it firstly and secondly in a part it talks about just accepting your parents for who they are just know they love you and that's all that matters. Personaly I am not always sure about that... I think it would be a goal to be reached to feel that way but I know for many that isn't always possible at a given time and sometimes not ever but hopefully peace can be made within themselves.

  • A proper song, criminally overlooked by many. I'm sure that many people who only know her pop hits would be startled by the subject matter, and beautiful arrangement of this song.

  • very deep

  • This song is so deeply personal to me.....it brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it....Madonna is amazing, and persevered through having no mother and a tumultuous relationship with her father.

  • love this song!

  • wow how could u like that sia's version she cant even pronounce words properly wat a load of shit......madonna i bow 2 u for this stunning song

  • more like sorry to all the sia fans, but madonna's version is way better

  • Sia´s Version is a big way better .. But this is also good :)

  • @09calle yeah, right....who is 'Sia?'

  • @xtinainthecity Sia is an Australian artist and honestly her version is better. check out her other stuff.. its pretty good.

  • @vwsambafc Sia is a fine singer, but this song is very personal to Madonna as well as to myself, so "Sia's" re-make does nothing for me because it was not based on her personal experience.

  • @09calle i also like sia's version!! better! :D but its a great song :D

  • Omg went to listen to sia's n it crap dunno y everyone likes it soo much, she killed the song it's meant to b a ballad not some techno shit

  • This is, for me, the best song by Madonna. Patrick leonard, who also worked whit Pink Floyd, producer and musician, made the instrumental for this song and album.

  • This songs gives me the chills! What a powerful song! everyone should take their hat and bow down to this Madonna. The Madonna! We want her back!

  • Sorry to all the Madonna Fans but i like Sia's version a looot more

  • I have always loved madonna but she touched my heart with this song, I wonder if she sings from experience????????

  • I have always loved madonna, she read straight into my heart with this,

  • WWWOWWW...I had no idea she was so deep like this so early on. Until now I thought Madonna in '89 was mostly about her "vogue era". Not quite. This is sad but very empowering...good stuff ima go get this now.

  • This song is like the other side of Suzanne Vega's "Luka"...more haunting than charming and not afraid to let others know about being abused.

  • @VicGeorge2K6

    I Agree with you.... :)

  • Sia's is fucking horrible. Geez, I don't get how people lile her's better.

  • this song is so sad..but i love it!!!!! =(

  • woooah, sia's is so much better.

  • i heard the Sia's version first, which is probably why i prefer to this one. Sia's sounds more like a pure confession while this sounds more like a power ballad. everyone has their own taste i guess

  • @soup422 Yeah I like Sia's version better, but I love Madonna too :)

  • My father is such a bad person, a big asshole.

Thats why I love this song!!!

  • @pablorubiolugo I hated my dad and step dad. They abused my mother! My step dad only abused me once.

  • Gawd...my eyes get all misty when ever I hear this song. And imma dood. lol.

  • thanx dad .. 4 makin my life shit

  • Sia covers it

  • The only Madonna song that can reduce me to tears, even to this day.

  • @Sweetbabyvixen It just did that to me on the way home from work.

  • @Sweetbabyvixen It is a bit touching

  • @77Folky Well, Confessions on a Dance Floor, 2005, is one of her most brilliant albums, moody and atmospheric with songs on fame and love. So I don't see any reason for her to stop when into her third decade she puts out one of her best pieces of work. And I love 2008's Hardy Candy. Great to have her fun side back, fun pop club tracks.

  • Damn this song and the video are so sad. How you hurt your child if you lose someone you love?..you hold on so tight and fill them with all the love inside of you.

They become your world, the reason for living, no regrets when you look into their eyes, no sorrow when you hear their laughter, no guilt when you hold them.

They complete the circle of love.

  • goos song ..

  • real sad song....

  • FUCK YOU DAD

  • I think this song is the most beautiful that I´ve ever heard!!! I love the video and Madonna´s voice!!! Madonna is the best!!! (j.c from chile)

  • A very beautiful song but I like sia's version better...

  • Madonna's version is better...

  • Always had a love/hate relationship with song. Her singing is bad and I can't decide if it works for the song or not. It is haunting and the music is gorgeous.

  • her singing is fine

  • @AJAXKID123

If you have a problem with Madonna's voice, give Sia's version a try. Sia did a cover on this beautiful song, and I think she has a much better voice. Maybe you'll like it.

  • I love this song

  • I wish I knew back then what I know today.

  • I was 6 when this came out. This picture is of the album cover of the 1st cassette tape I ever owned. I feel so lucky that this is what I had to look up to, and not slutty Britney or Lindsey Lohan.

  • @esseroy

i had the same cassette :) i was really turned on by the sensual way her fingers were photgraphed on the cover

  • Beautiful song!!!

  • i can relate to this song, not really from a parent standpoint but with my sister

  • postdebut: I think oh father and dear jessie are one of tehe most beuatiful songs of madonna, and the sweet and nostalgic pray for spanish eyes

  • this is one of my 3 fave songs. its so deep on so may levels, and i relate to it, through troubles i had with my father. there is no other song that conveys how i got to be the person i am today. Madonna you have left the world with so much that we can be so thankful for. the one true Global icon. a pioneer in your field. you know how to get the most out of music. a modern day Bach or Mozart.

  • I always listen to this song as a child after I felt betrayed by my father.

  • love this childhood classic track from one of the best thing's to come out of the 1980s

  • feel your pain curiousfox

  • i use to sing this song when i was child ,, hurts so bad ... funny thing is i still love my dad for being there , strange

  • my past is written in a song and it stings.... deep.. its a shame children like us had to go through something like that bc even if you have learned to live with the past its never forgotten and follows you forever. to anyone else who have lived threw it like myself stay strong and keep ypur head high and NEVER forget....IT WAS NOT YOUR FAULT!!!!

  • This song means alot to me.The lyrics are so true.I totally agree, its a powerful song.(and as 'MadonnaImmaculata'says it so hits close to home).

  • Powerful song!

  • dont beat ur children. out of frustration, if ur wife dies look after them. miss u mum .

  • wrong! kill ur girlfriends 1st always.

  • @serial841 I feel you, my dad used to do that to me...now he's gone

I loved this song without understanding any of the words since I was 8

  • @serial841 Or as PRINCE once said, "don't abuse children or they'l turn out like me"

  • @serial841 LOL whens a good time to beat them out of happiness.I wonder today as a parent herself if her opinions have changed??

  • @serial841 So true. Also Mom should not be the one standing there watching, and validating what he did because she does not want to be without him.

  • agree with kman6969. my most lovable choices are dear jessie ,oh father, spanish eyes and live to tell

  • You once had the power....I never felt so good about myself........bleeds into my soul.....

  • Forgiveness is a choice......"you didn't mean to be cruel....somebody hurt you too...."

  • Thanks for posting.

  • I love this song and I can REALLY, REALLY relate. It sooo hits close to home.

  • sorry to hear that MadonnaImmaculata. (gives hug) x

  • doomiest of doom

  • I can't believe that this song and 'Dear Jessie' aren't on her greatest hits.....her two best songs. At least half of 'Celebration' is utter garbage, by comparison.

  • Dear Jessie wasn't a hit, but this is shamer, that song not in DVD. Its video is one of her best videos ever.

  • actually, if you look it up..."dear jessie" was a big hit single..a top 10 hit outside of the USA. especially in the UK. but i'm not surprised its not on the 'CELEBRA
