Awesome tribute, my friend! When Alan won the championship @ the Hooter's 500, I think that was the end of an era. You couldn't have wrote a better script. Irvan and Allison were in the championship hunt...Irvan wrecked and took Allison out...nobody else...just those two. Petty's last race. Jeff Gordons first. Kulwicki won the championship literally by inches...leading more laps than Elliott. If he hadn't have led the most laps...he would have lost 'cuz Elliott had more wins. Drama at it's best!
Alan Kulwicki was like NASCAR's Rocky. While not a brute like Rocky, this guy had a big heart and wanted to do things his way despite all the odds being stacked against him, and he prevailed. I wish I had been a NASCAR fan when he was around/back when NASCAR was still NASCAR not a sellout.
didnt he have a different rear end design than everyone else? i cant remember i was about 7 also when this happened. Still have his hooters car on my dresser actually.
With that 92 title, Alan was just getting started! He would have probably received better equipment due to more money from sponsors and just knowing that HE COULD DO IT!!! He may have had 2 or 3 championships had he lasted an entire career! You may not have posted the numbers that Guys like Earnhardt Gordon and Petty have, we may admire them heavily, but Alan INSPIRED US fans much more I think!
Alan was and still is one of my favorite drivers. My connection is sort of unique.
I have been battling stage 4 colon cancer for nearly 3 years now and about 2 years ago my in laws who live in Wisconsin met a man who was Alan's uncle I believe. Anyway when he found out how big a fan of Alan I was he pulled out his wallet and gave my mother in law a trading card of Alan and made her promise she would send it to me.
I think NASCAR needs to look back and think of this guy and say "This guy made a REAL comeback" he didn't need the Chase to propel him to a title. He did so much with so little, he beat guys like Earnhardt, Waltrip, Elliott, Allison etc, he was at a disadvantage running his own team from scratch and he still won... Now NASCAR is worried about fairness, truthfully NASCAR NOW is unfair, back in the day the best truly won, and in 1992, Alan Kulwicki was the best!
I had the privledge of watching Alan race short tracks in Wisconsin as a child. People talk of childhood idols in sports....well Alan is still my idol, even though my childhood has long since passed. As my children have asked, "Daddy who is that guy in the picture?" I just smile, have them sit down and tell him who Alan was as a person, and why he is still important in how I choose to live my life, with determination, honor, faith, and conviction. Alan, God bless, and may you rest in peace.
Every April 1, I remember turning on the television that morning and feeling sick to my stomach. He was unique among drivers, unassuming, funny in his own way and above all stubbornly independent. It was an honor to chat with him at Pocono. God bless You Alan! We haven't forgotten you !
wats the song playing in this video? its really good. god i love this video. he is somebody i look up to. i hope to become a nascar driver one day. just cant give up. he is my inspiration.
A champion in every sense of the word. It was difficult growing up in Hueytown, Alabama (Davey Allison's hometown) and cheering for Alan (a yankee at that)..but there was no north or south on the race track...just men living and dying for their dreams. RIP Alan, Davey, Clifford, Neil...
I never knew him growing up, but I liked his style because he never gave up and contended for the championship on the last race as an underdog...wish there was a driver like him in today's sport.
Nice tribute. Really a great driver. One thing I admired about him was that he was was a very successful owner/driver competing against the biggest teams. One of the very last good ones!!
this tribute is awesome. i became a nascar fan in 1995, i didnt know much about alan or davey or many others that had passed before. Now that i am older i like looking at nascar before i watched and became a true race fan. I really enjoy looking at alan and davey and what could have been if they were still here, but this video is awesome great job!
Also, like Thurman Munson, Owen Hart and others, he died far too soon, we will see him in heaven someday when we die ourselves. Thanks for reading this and god bless. We will miss you Alan, Davey, Dale Sr. (#3) rest in peace.
this is a great video, and tribute, I never saw him race or win the championship, live because I was to young to remember, plus I had no cable tv, back then. I am 22 now, I was 7 when he won it when living in nyc. When Alan, won and I saw this video, it was very touching and very moving, and prove to everyone that you can achieve your dreams, no matter what the odds are in racing and in life, this is a prime example of that could relate in us, today, when going through our struggles in life.
hey underbird, i love the video do you have anymore of the cnn footage of the story and if you do could you please post it i'm very interested in seeing it
They really should, but unfortunately there must be some hidden rule that if you die in a race you get a movie otherwise screw you and that is f-ed up.
Kulwicki and Allison deserve a movie made about them a lot more than Dale did. Allison was a better driver than Dale, and Kulwicki was the best.
So f the society then glorifies a person not for what they do but for how they die.
whenever I see that 97WLPX car I gotta smile.. I remember goin to Hales Corners to watch AK and Dick Trickle duke it out on saturday nights.. to see your local track hero go on to win the Winston Cup was a dream come true... AK RIP
We know in all truth that God only takes the best, Dale Sr, Davey Allison,Alan Kulwicki too. One day when our time has run our own chequred flag has fallen. May we all grace that great race track in heaven were only the best of the best get to run. Reserve me a seat. Ill be there with all the other fans.
There will NEVER be a better champion like Alan. He did it his way on his own No team mates. When he died a big part of my love of nascar died also. I miss the good old days of nascar.
Alan was a friend of mine... what a racing legend! Did it on his own with his own money! The music is beautiful, the video footage is beautiful. Im sure with it's perfection, Alan would have loved it!
GOD BLESS ALAN...the underbird will forever ride in my heart...
I love you Alan, thank you for putting me where i need to be
He was popular due to him being an owner/driver and being the underdog who won the championship. Coming into 1992 I doubt many people heard of Alan Kulwicki but after Atlanta everyone knew his name.
he Dominated the Late model series around America he was well know with Die hard race fans.. this video gives me chills so sad that he went way before his time.. great vid 5/5
... actually he only raced around the midwest from 1979-1985, and I think his best ASA points finish was 2nd in 1982. He hopped up to NASCAR as soon as he could. While he definitely made his mark at Slinger (which is just like Bristol, btw) and WIR, he was no Dick Trickle. I still have my WLPX baseball cap and my "Mighty Mouse" sew-on patch. Aaah, I miss him. :(
wow this is one of the most touching videos i have ever watched. i loved the rare ASA footage at the beginning. i think alan was one of the very best drivers racing ever saw

MOM: There was a plane crash last night. A NASCAR driver was killed.
