There was a day when there were only "whistles". The Brits have tended to hold on to the term and the Americans tend to say "horns". It is like "screw" versus "propeller".
@coolbeans1216 The captain mis-spoke in layman's terms....the official term again is Whistle. I use to think of it as a horn too, but I did a lot of research on this and sure enough the results were that they are called whistles on a liner or big ship. If you do the research you may come up with the same results as well.
@VMAdventures do you still have VIP rates at all? Do you want to be my best friend? ;) I'm looking at going next year for the first time with NCL! Previously sailed with RCI and Disney. Plus, Reba is my hero!
@livelikeagypsy Sure, I can get you excellent rates with NCL with a very respected Cruise Broker that can save you money, get you upgrades, discounts, ammenities....let me know and I'll get you in touch with an NCL Cruise Broker.

Are they playing "Gettin Jiggy With It?" LOL
I was like "I know that song" but couldn't identify it until you turned to face the bridge and I guess the treble came in more clearly.

term onboard shio is the horn. On a tubetube video here, the captain said, want to hear the horn, not whistle. a whistle is on the steamboat.

@coolbeans1216 Actually, the proper term for these "horns" on a ship is "whistle".
