The theme you see and hear between 1:14 and 1:28 was the one used by CBS from 1987 to 1991. It's my favorite of all the ones ever used.
This theme has been brought back for use again in the Evening News broadcast now anchored by Scott Pelley. I never thought this could happen as I felt it was too good to be discontinued.
Connie Chung! That fell flat on it's face. Could the news execs really expect her to compliment Dan Rather? Talk about mixing oil and water. I wonder where she is now?
@AaronBruceLadner I have TONS of respect for Dan Rather even when there was all the controversy surrounding the George W. Bush National Guard story. I honestly don't believe he was as biased as some other news anchors.
Alas the end of an era with Brokaw, Jennings and Rather.
Thank you for such a complete collection! Again, there are a lot of these I haven't seen. I also didn't realize there were so many variations on the opening from the mid-2000s on. Bob Schieffer had two variations on his opening, which is also something I didn't realize.
I do like the dry open at 1:06.

I love how the 1976-1981 intro transitions from the local newsroom. It makes it seem like the affiliate and CBS are one!

At intro that starts at 1:20 was my favorite. The music and openings thereafter I don't care for.
