I am from South Africa , I have watched this clip over and over and over ! I continue to practice it and watch and practice , I am beginning to feel Masunaga Sensei's energy with me . They are just no words to describe it , He moves like a cat , you try leaning your full body weight onto someone;s inner thigh liver meridian and you will understand how light on his feet masunaga is when he performs side posture routine, please any fellow shiatsu friends contact me harry@bodybasics.co.za
Thank you so much for these videos! they are awesome! I was just wondering if anybody has a transcript of what Masunaga sensei says on the videos?
Or is anybody interested in helping me to do the transcript? I'm from Spain and my English is not that good, and I'd love to understand also what it's said on the videos (although I agree that watching and understand what you watch is more important than the words!)
@ardanash Even though Masunaga Sensei is speaking in broken English it is clear what he is saying during each of the video clips that I posted. I might type up what he says in English. It could then be translated to different languages. This is a great idea. I think I will do this and create a webpage for the translations to be posted to.
You are welcome! It is nice to see pure technique from Masunaga Sensei before people get their hands on his work and invent their own distortions. Some therapists can really enter into Mushin (No Mind) and work correctly! Others have no idea how to practice and they are stuck making up new "cool looking" technique of their own. Poor therapists work from their own power not understanding that true technique comes from Mukan (Empty Space) were their exists a well of endless formlessness.
I just read a website that has embedded all four parts of my video here of Masunaga Sensei teaching. On this person's website they suggest Masunaga Sensei is rushing and doing techniques fast because he was teaching at a seminar. This was a silly inaccurate suggestion to make! People should get real training first and not make silly comments like this! Watch Masunaga Sensei, listen to what he has to say, and learn!
You should not make comments to your students and make such suggestions to fit your perverted way of teaching. Not all Shiatsu is performed slow! Often deep relaxation happens when you vigorously move around Kiketsu (blood and energy). In the west, many therapists work too lightly, too slow, and do more petting then actual therapeutic work!
The video was taken in Toronto, Canada in the early 1970s. During this time period Masunaga Sensei made a number of visits to one of his students there Tetsuro Saito who had opened a Shiatsu school there.
Thanks so much for posting this, Yotsumedojo. This material is awesome and an unique opportunity for people who love Zen Shiatsu to see Masunaga Sensei teaching.
You are very welcome! I have seen many people teach and perform Shiatsu both in my country and in Japan. People just need more training in the original country where arts were founded. People need to get close to legitimate teachers and do what they say, follow their advise, and above all.... TRAIN, TRAIN, and more TRAIN.... before they use the term master and claim to be teachers.
This video is not for sale. It was filmed privately by one of the participants who was at the training event.
Please be happy that you can enjoy it here and actually see Masunaga Sensei alive! A great many people teach strange methods in the name of "Zen Shiatsu" around the world. However, there are actually only a few people alive who trained directly with him.
There are some other videos of Masunaga Sensei teaching which I may post once I receive permission to do so.
You are right about that. I noticed you are locked for messages unless i'm your friend. I tried to send you one before. I would like to ask some more questions of Masunaga Sensei and what trainers/schools around today are worth learning from. I know of Wataru Ohashi and his school in New York, but have found a few others strewn around the country. I am a student of massage therapy in NH, but I am going to become a certified asian bodyworker and specalize in zen shiatsu.
Masunaga Sensei contributed to the further development of Shiatsu by developing a system of meridian extensions known as "Keiraku Hansha". These are extensions of the standard meridians used in all forms of Asian medicine.
In recent times, many strange made up forms of bodywork have polluted the field of Shiatsu. I hope more people will be drawn to correct forms of training.
I hope all practitioners of Shiatsu enjoy seeing this video of Masunaga Sensei.
Shizuto Masunaga (増永静人 1925-1981) was a Japanese Shiatsu practitioner and who founder the art of "Zen Shiatsu"
Masunaga Sensei was born in 1925 in Kure, Hiroshima Japan and graduated in Psychology from Kyoto University. In 1959, he graduated from the Japan Shiatsu College and went on to teach Psychology at the college. Masunaga Sensei passed away at the age of 57 in 1981.
