My first time to America in 1982 i climbed up like thousands of others no doubt and scatched my initials in the back of the O, that was an important moment for me, as a child i had grown up watching the movies and i felt i had done something not many others had (not true of course) "HOLLYWOOD" how could you not be seduced..........
@hunter4hire No, that issue was resolved last year when the land under it was purchased from the developers using private funds, the last $900,000 donated by Hugh Hefner. The tract is forever protected from development, and the Sign already belongs to the City of Los Angeles. You can read more about it on my blog of the same name at wordpress
@hunter4hire no i heard that there going to tear it down then re-build it and the side of the hotel its going to spell hollywood so the hollywood sign might be a hotel for the rich
@23darvin It's not true--you're referring to a fantasy design article about the Sign. Not only is the Sign on parkland protected from development, but the ledge it occupies is less than 20 feet wide--not big enough to put any kind of building!
It would be amazing if people in Hollywood would pay to have the sign remade with lights and make it look very classy and expensive. It very simple now, but they can do a lot with the sign now to make it look incredible.
@WhiteFlowerLei76 It would be beautiful but it's never going to happen because it would draw even more people to the Sign at night, causing accidents on the narrow, winding streets that lead up to it. As it is, the Sign is a magnet that causes gridlock in a residential area whose streets simply can't take the traffic.
the whole thing was great right until it was compared to the Vietnam War Memorial. Theres a little more feeling at the memorial than a big white sign.
That stunt guy with sunglasses has lived in Hollywood for tooooo long. (There was no fence, no dogs, no armed guy.) He probably missed explosions too :P
It's amazing. What a great documentary. I touched it in '06. The helicopter hovered a couple of times and I was scared that I was going to get arrested, but didn't. I WAS THERE!!! (Sorry, just had to brag a little.)
its my dream to see the sign in person!

@TheCTh19 The comparison was that they are both national symbols that have to be read to be understood. I never equated their importance.
